I've just seen the full documentary, it's a pity they don't show the rest here. She decides to get another university degree in France. Before leaving, she goes to see her family again and her father is so sweet and supportive, even her awful sister is really nice to her. Her father said some really touching things that actually made me understand him a lot better. He also said to her that she brings him honour. At the end of the documentary it said that after graduating in France, she got a job offer in Germany, where she now lives with her husband.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's normal with some Asian cultures. My parents are Chinese from Vietnam and the way I hear them talk amongst their friends, it's pretty rude. Like their friends will say, "You guys are ugly, how do you have pretty children?" or "You got fat" when they haven't seen each other in awhile.

Thanks for sharing that information cuz I was very concerned about her mental state. To have another female put you down like what that lady did to her was just very painful to watched. All I could say to myself was just marry a foreigner, get out. One her own parents are not on half of the level of education she is on, they will never understand how she feels. well, that's our lives. and this lawyer lady's hometown is Shandong which is very traditional.

Not in most of Asia, Africa, or the Middle east.

From the conversation, i can tell that the family has traditional mindset and they worried about her being alone in the later part of her life. They worried nobody will take care of her when she is older and when she is sick. If she decided to be single, she needs to convince her family that she can take care of herself in her old age alone, eg save a lot of money, a good health insurance, or do proper planning for her old age. Otherwise the family will always be worried of her and will always urged her to get married so that someone can take care of her.

It's complicated in part because families are the primary social safety net for elderly chinese people. In many ways, she may need to have children to depend on to support her in later years. She may be able to provide for herself but she is blazing a new path in her parents' eyes. To remain single and support yourself means that they have to worry about that because it is a calculated risk. Now, that being said, the way the government and society at large are treating women's fertility as a commodity in a post one child policy world is pretty messed up.

That wasn't the interviewer. I'm fairly certain she was at a matchmaker place. Like online dating, but they have offices. That was the lady taking her info to try and match her with men. Asian cultures are known for being far more blunt. They say what they mean and don't worry much about hurting someone's feelings.

The matchmaker is trying to get her to lower her standards and expectations. That will make her job easier.

Yeah it's the patriarchal society, ruled by men. It's sickening. My mom was the same. Their family wanted to have a son, but instead they got 3 daughters. She was the youngest and tried to be the boy, they never had. She is quite masculine and has been the head of our family. Highly educated and in high position at working life, but I still feel there was a part in her that was deeply hurt of her father making her feel, she was a disappointment just for having been born as a girl.

I believe this is only a role-play where some of the real things are acted out. Anyway, I want to share what I know on this. In (East) Asia, women are traditionally expected to get married early, usually in their early 20s (say under 25) so if you are over 30 and single, you're likely to be labeled leftover, either silently or explicitly. I find this absurd, but it is what it is. Of course, new generations are trying to change that, but it's a deeply rooted mindset which will take a while to be changed.

Chinese culture is very different from what I have been raised with. I'm glad I can be strong and have a husband if I wish to.

I thought that guy who is a college graduate was a great match for her but she would have had to swallow some of her pride and educate him silently to the recognition of her worth and get him to be amenable without his initial consent. He will treasure and appreciate her for it later. None of us come here fully formed and perfect. We have to develop through experiences. And as nothing can resist the genuine love of a woman, she would have been able to affect the change of his personality through mindfulness. Most countries actually have 51% women. Girl fetuses are more likely to survive difficult pregnancies. Women's bodies are designed to survive scarcity so nature produces slightly more girls than boys

I always tell people to build yourself up so people like that don't mess with your future and those around you who will be affected by them. People complain about those who are privileged but alot of privileged people built their own protections for a reason. my reaction too, I think deep down, her sisters are jealous and marriage for them is a burden they must endure. Her sister said marriage is not comfortable state. The tradition of women as brood mares for the husband's family is the only thing important in a family. A wife has no right to personal happiness or kindness from her husband or his family. She is there to be a work horse, and bear sons and God help her if she can't. How her family got a way with more children is interesting. The state when she was born allowed only one child. A girl child was either exposed or sent to an state facility or was aborted . If your second pregnacy was discovered, an abortion up to nine months was forced on the mother. How they had 5 daughters and no one reported them, is very unusable . Now , China has stopped foreign adoptions, these children will wither away with the state]s blessing. These institutions are overwhelmingly female, if a child is disabled, they get rid of the child. The only boys are those with disabilities , unwanted as well. The hospitals have dying rooms for girl babies to be left to die. Government is unconcerned about that, but unhappy marriages with children is a must. How to change that, a crisis of no children and an overwhelming elderly population with no one to work or take care of them is going to happen, The society will fall apart. I do think there will be a solution unless they force a law that every single woman must be married to multiple husbands. Now there is a 2 children limit, how many men must a woman marry? each husband allowed 2 babies? 5 husbands , plus 2 each man=10 children way above the 2 limit. This idea don't make sense let alone a woman having to submit to the demands of 5 men and their families. In Tibet, a girl marries multiple husbands - all brothers, often much younger than her, she will raise them to marriage age and then start having babies. Oh joy, change your husband's nappies . That is such an appeal.

I agree to all of your opinion but cultures are different around the world it will be harder for her when she ages she won’t have anyone to look after her. Unlike western countries such as US (i am a student here )Adults dont leave their house when they turn 18 or graduate from college in most of the asian country’s they are suppose to support them financially and take care as they as grow older and as people here in US dont take marraige seriously they marry divorce after some year have children out of marraige all of this is taboo in different cultures that’s why parent force you to marry as dont want your life to unstable or full of loneliness when you grow older. To put culture differences in perspective it is same as parents in US would force their kids to rent their own house and live separate once they they graduate from college or in some cases when they turn 18. This doesnt happen in China...Just putting down my opinion could be wrong or right doesn’t matter won’t lie it was sad to see this

This isn't only in China. This is the case for many women all over the world, even in our so called progressive West. If a woman is educated and has high standards, she is told to lower them. If she ages or gets to a certain age as if that's not the natural cycle of life, she gets dismissed and becomes irrelevant. If she enjoys being single or independent, she is made to feel like she is selfish and something must be wrong with her. I can relate to her pain. I hope she knows how valuable she is. You don't need marriage to validate your worth.

When you come from poor circumstances, you get married to strengthen your financial life. It's the western romanticism that seems to forget this reality. Not everyone can afford to wait for love. For those who make a marriage work despite not being madly in love, I salute them.

I don't think that was the case at all. Cultural differences might lead you to misinterpreation. In my experience, Chinese people have a tendency to be brutally honest like this. She is in a bad position of finding a Chinese husband, because of her age. That is a sad, but it is the truth. Left-over women is a phenomenon in China.

yeah this is merely cultural difference , westerners value politeness whereas chinese people are more casual and direct to everyone which is interpreted by foreigners as rude when i fact they are not being malicious at all.
