A friend of mine is a volunteer fire-fighter in Australia, so he has received medical training. While he was visiting China, the bus he was a passenger on hit an e-scooter rider who had jumped a red light. The e-scooter rider was knocked unconscious and 'swallowed' her own tongue, so she was suffocating. My friend's training kicked in and he cleared her airway and put her into the recovery position, saving her life. When the police arrived, they detained my friend for two hours, questioning why he had attended to the scooter rider. His answers about his training and how he had saved her from asphyxiation didn't seem to register with the officers. Finally, when asked yet again why he had "interfered", my friend snapped and said "Because that is what we do in a civilised country!" The police immediately let him go.
Your friend clearly didn't understand the implication that by saving her life he is now indebted to her whole family for actual cash money, rather than her being forever indebted to him in purely karma like in western society morals. Of course with all the "where there is blame there is a claim - no win no fee!" sharks, and their infinitely more wily [redacted] from which they learned this scam things are changing in the west too.
Here in Germany it is actually punishable by law not to help someone in need. It's called "unterlassene Hilfeleistung". Seems strange that in other countries it seems like it's rather somewhat the other way around...
In Australia I had a Chinese woman let her son run out of the car while in traffic, unfortunately him opening the passenger door caused me to have an accident on my bike when I clipped the door. I busted my orbital bone in my arm and needed an operation. The woman never talked to me, never asked if I was OK. In Australia we have free medical care for traffic accidents she does not need to pay for the operation but refused to admit fault as she thought she had to pay. My sister a lawyer contacted her and reassured her that she does not need to pay but I couldn't have the operation until she admitted that I was indeed involved in an accident with her. 10 days later of being in pain she finally admitted it was her fault and I was able to have the operation. She never once rung me, she never showed any concern for my injuries caused by her. all she cared about was getting out of there. Fortunately the police were there within seconds and passers by told her not to leave the scene of the accident as she tried to leave me lying on the road!!

Yes thanks for asking (unlike the Chinese woman who caused the accident) I had the operation and had a cobalt replacement to the ball of my orbital bone as it had shattered and was not repairable, but it now works well with 90% movement but only about 70% strength compared to before the accident and 5 months of not being able to ride a bike, drive a car or work due to rehbilitation!!

Funny that you mention this. I was in a chinese restaurant in Germany a few days ago. I stumbled and fell, hard. Two chinese employees did nothing, they just watched, no expression in their faces. Two German customers approached me, helped me get up, asked if i was ok and if i needed a doctor.
Couple of years ago I saw this video of a toddler slowly getting run over at a Chinese market, it was cctv, so no sound. But what shocked me then was the indifference and lack of emotions. The child was dying in the streets and people just glanced at it and conitued their day. Like WTF?
My second thought was, like the woman in this video, they were driven over many times. I mean it could happen by accident but many cars slowly driving over the already hurt or dead victim is not understandable to me.

When I was 15 one of my teachers told me not to stand up for others anymore because it would cause me trouble (I already got bullied). That made me angry and dissappointed. I understand that I can or should not intervene in every situation, but sometimes just a few words can change things for the better. I am glad to see that you did break up that fight and it ended.
My grandfather told me the same thing when I lived in the USSR. I learned to not mess with the police and to not intervene in risky situations. Fighting for justice in a communist country, you get problems, not justice.
In Ireland I saw a woman stumble when I was young (like ten years old), some guys asked her what was wrong, she had blood sugar issues and her head was getting fuzzy, she couldn't walk (was quite old). The guys went off to a shop, got her a sugary drink and stayed with her to make sure she was ok.
Ireland used to be like this completely until the Celtic Tiger years. It's still quite a peaceful and caring place but not as safe nor as kind as it used to be since people have started to love money and choice more than God and each other sadly. But yes, I'd like to think we still help each other here in Ireland!

The reason is they will blame you as the last person to have been in contact with them." It's so sad that this culture exist and that these people have to give me such depressing advice. One day I fell from a scooter on my knee in the underground parking lot as i was avoiding the big rain that just started. When I lived in China I've heard of stories that when someone got run over by a car and survived. He or she would be run over numerous more times, to make sure death was certain. The resulting fine was less than paying for lifelong medical bills. If true, who knows. But after watching this video it would seem possible.
This is why I love the Good Samaritan law in Texas, USA. It protects a citizen from being sued if something went wrong, as long as they had goodwill. Therefore, I've noticed in TX, people are way more likely to help someone. People stop and ask if a broken down car needs help. CPR will be performed in a crowd. Emergency splints made. Even in different parts of the US that don't have the same culture as China, you still see hesitance because of being afraid of being culpable.
I don't know if I've ever stopped to helped someone because the law allowed me to. It's just a value that I was raised with. Even if there were a law against it, if someone's life was in danger I would help them.

I don't blame any of the women (and most of the people shown running away as soon as trouble arose were women) in the social experiment part for not trying to physically engage a group of violent men. Unfortunately from what I can gather, the police in China are feared by the citizens too, because of their brutality and their dedication to state propaganda. There are tales of people randomly getting their bikes confiscated and losing the entire means of their livelihood just because they were unable to pay ad-hoc "inspection of license" bribes.

I am Chinese born in Costa Rica and I tell you, you really point out things that I always criticize about Chinese people. My dad used to say that Chinese people are me first, second me and last me. Good samaritans are like a rare breed in Chinese society and I think is the mentality of as long as it doesn't affect me then it's ok. But one thing is true, if it is a close friend or family member they are more likely to help. As for strangers, forget it, they will probably let them die.

I had an argument about this with a Chinese friend of mine after I brought up the case of a Dutch guy who was sentenced to jail in China after his neighbor fell of a roof. The story is that the Chinese neighbor was very drunk and loud, the Dutch guy went to have a look and the neighbor fell off the edge. The Dutch guy was found guilty, because he went down to the neighbor and tried to resuscitate him, to no avail. The court argued that an innocent person wouldn't have done that. He then was detained and was interrogated 30 times, without him having the chance to take a lawyer - which is his right. They didn't have proof, still made his family pay a huge sum of money as compensation. And because the justice system would show it was failing if they just let him go, which would have been logical since they couldn't really proof it... they convicted him to several years in jail. So I'm guessing as a foreigner in China, and you do get into trouble... you're kinda screwed.

It is quite the opposite, "The fact that he tried to resuscitate his neighbor after his fall was not counted on him, but according to the judge proved precisely that Fitiés involvement in the fall was not deliberate. This is evident from the verdict on paper." Can we please stop spreading the false accusation any more?

Because there were no witness at the crime scene, most of the details actually came from the Dutch guy's own statements. The victim, Chinese neighbor, deliberately made some noise from the terrace to disturb the Dutch guy as a retaliation. Because they were not exactly friendly neighbors and had a few unpleasant noise nuisance disputes already, this time Dutch guy brought a kitchen knife to the terrace to confront him. The situation got escalated when the Dutch guy gave his neighbor a finger gun and made a clicking sound with his mouth. His neighbor got so irritated that he tried to climb over the fence (Dutch guy's own terrace is separated from his neighbor's terrace by a 60cm tall fence), but slipped and fell to death. However, the prosecutors did not buy the Dutch guy's story. They had the evidences to believe they got into a fight and Dutch guy pushed the victim to fall down from the terrace. The evidences showed that the victim had a broken nose and other injuries that can hardly be caused by falling. To add to that, Dutch guy did bring a knife with him to the confrontation. The prosecutors charged the Dutch guy for intentional assault to death. The defendant was found guilty by a lower court and sentenced to 12 years in prison. However, the Dutch guy's French girlfriend later posted the case on the social media and urged the Dutch government to intervene, and they did. The official story is that because there were no sufficient evidences that Dutch guy intentionally pushed the victim, the higher court changed the conviction to manslaughter, and reduced the sentence to 4.5 years. FWIW, Dutch guy also reached a civil reconciliation with the victim's family by paying off $80K worthy of compensation. I am not in a position to say whether the Dutch guy is guilty as charged or not, I simply stated the facts I learn. Chinese legal system has many flaws, but this case clearly has nothing to do with punishing a good Samaritan to help those in need.
I saw a horrific video of a toddler that ran into traffic, was run over, and all these Chinese drivers slamming their brakes and looking, then driving off. DRIVING OFF man! One after the other then finally the mother scoops up the kid but no one helped at all.
In China life is cheap. People there worship money and materials as god, and anything organic as an expandable resource to use up to get that money or material. It is a very pathetic way of life. Just go read about how they treat their elderly. Sending them away or hoping they'd die quickly. It's a parasitic chain where everyone feeds off everyone. There is no humanity or love that defines the existence of a conscious being.

I'm Chinese and I've never had the desire to go there. Too many horror stories.. And now they've taken their ways abroad with China being a huge tourist migration.
And with SO MANY Chinese tourist travelling the world they are creating VERY bad impression. At airports they always jump to be the first in line and at restaurants shouting across tables to speak with each other. Yet many times I've seen they can have a great sense of humour and of course (westernised) Chinese food is loved by most everyone. I dislike doing business with them as they are painfully cheap and I mean PAINFULLY cheap, very much like Indians. But there again, Indians 'can' have great senses of humour and as with the Chinese, Indian food is also loved by many, including myself. I wish each nationality would do more work on getting along with westerners *especially* when deciding to live in western societies. I admire WT' for his (or her) honesty and frankness. It takes a bigger person to declare the less desirable traits in their culture. To which as a westerner I will admit we are at times to quick to become angry or 'rage' in traffic situations. We need to work on that as the Chinese and Indians need to work on their cheapness. We can all be better, we just have to be HONEST with ourselves. Thank you again WT (upvoted your comment). As someone who's ethnic Chinese (born in Hong Kong but grew up in Canada) I find it embarrassing and shameful that people are so cold-hearted when I read about incidents that it's cheaper for drivers to run and kill pedestrians (running them over back and forth) than pay damages for the injured.
It`s not just China where a driver will reverse back over someone they`ve hit to make sure they`re dead, so they don`t have to pay for their treatment!

That's not a fair assessment. First of all, when most people are doing something wrong, and they are caught early enough by someone who looks like they got their shit together, there is a very good chance they'll stop.
I think you could be right if the setting was different, but it's broad daylight and although I can't really tell what the exact setting is, it seems as though he films these bits in somewhat "normal" areas that could facilitate police involvement. I could imagine your scenario if he was in an an unconventional nightlife area, and it was dark at around 1 or 2am during a night of drinking - perhaps in an outside back porch of an establishment that isn't easily visible to the larger public eye... It doesn't exactly have to be what I described, but I just want to put out my thoughts that the setting could possibly have more significance than clothing or being a foreigner.

What you're basically saying is there is no working justice system in place. A typical problem of most developing countries. Reason why this is somewhat more noticeable in China (than, say, in India or Cambodia) is that in many places on the surface China does not actually look anything like a developing country and much more like a prosperous developed country. That's not just about first tier cities but also many lower tier locations: beautiful streets, parks, generally well-kept and maintained urban environment, new and beautiful modern buildings, new clean cars on the street, marked roads, signs and all other standardized details and features of urban environment. Shenzhen looks better than Singapore in places. All those things are features of a developed and advanced country which creates an impression (or rather an illusion I should say) that everything should be working just like those nicely paved streets and buildings. Problem is it doesn't. China's justice system (courts) did not progress nearly as fast as the economy did and you get a 21st century economy with a mid-20th century justice system which does not perform its most basic function: help people feel safe (from a legal point of view) and be able to help each other without getting into situations that Winston described in this video. And good justice system is a very important (if not THE most important) feature of a successful society. There's a lot of work to be done in China regarding that.
Instincts run deeper than the accessibility to modern technology. I am constantly harping "Digital film is cheap. Take more pictures" at the company I work for... while not taking enough myself.
I'm aware of the risks of helping people who are injured, etc. in China, but one thing that I DID do when I was in China, was there was a very old and small woman that was carrying a bunch of heavy food bags up to her apartment. She had almost a truck load full of those bags and she looked like she was hurting while trying to carry ALL of those bags up the stairs by herself. Everybody else just walked past her while she was carrying all of that stuff upstairs. Thus, in me being the guy that I am and seeing that, I went and helped her. In me being strong, I carried two and three of those bags at a time up the stairs AND when I started helping her, that's when other people started to help too AND that's when EVERYBODY came. So thus, when it comes to helping and being a good Samaritan in China, sometimes one may have to take the lead and that's when other people may follow suit. But anyway, I had good times and great memories in China. It was a great place!
Yes and a decent outwardly friendly attitude is what will get you through with flying colors all over China, i know because i have been in & out of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou,Tianjin & Jilin and as long as you make the first move to show your polite & friendliness you'll experience so many kind acting and decent Chinese citizens and it always comes down to looking like you actually love their country that seems to actually encourage them to "activate" their natural kindness & mindfulness factor! Personally, I love Tianjin,Beijing, Hong Kong etc because there are westerners around who have the guts to make some sort of stand against exploitative practices. Trust me, my family and I travelled to the far west of our province, Hunan (we're from the more affluent east, but nothing compared to the three cities I mentioned above) to get to a very famous geological site, reputed to have been used to film avatar (the blue one, not the legend of Aang) and unwittingly ended up trapped into a chain of fraudsters, begun by nothing less than a fake policeman (yes, those do exist in China!) and his 'passenger' whom he said was his neighbour needing a ride into town, who offered 'local prices' for the tourist attraction. We should have smelt a rat. Anyhow, for those who are interested, the place is Zhangjiajie, the scenery is amazing, but the locals leave much to be desired. High prices for vegetables that still have sand in them, toilets with no toilet paper, unless you ask the reception, and rooms to which you're not given keys, so must leave ajar, unless you ask the reception. Clearly a dark and danky place that has yet to see the light of day. And we weren't even the only ones complaining: the local Chinese tourists were furious in a completely helpless way, because they know the authorities won't help, and that's their hard earned holiday gone. But still, they have the photos to show their family and friends, but yeah, that's what it's like: a human, dog eat dog jungle in the wild west of China!

Sonny Fales thats a rare case. Most of them will scam you or sue you for theft. Chinese see money and 'face' more important than morals. Cases happenedin china like if you help the victim you get sued to pay for medical fees or go to jail.
As I can remember back in China, someone rescued a injured person to the hospital, when that person finally got better, he pointed fingers to the one who rescued him saying he was injured by that person. Lesson here: never help, or you will be in trouble.
I am Chinese, living in China. I guess every nation started out as the same, but if a nation like China suffered for thousands of years under one horrendously cruel dicator after another, who, to punish an offending commoner, were in the habit of literally eliminating the whole extended family and all friends and even acquaitances of that offender, whose only crime might have been to retort against the ruler, people of that nation will evolve into a cowardly heartless bunch. The Chinese on the Mainland China(PRC) , due to the continuation of the above-mentioned kind of atrocious ruling regime, are still cowardly. Other factors include some prominent cases where some good samaritans were wrongfully accused by the people they helped and had to pay huge sums of money or have their lives otherwise ruined, and the judiciary system actually helped those bad bastards--the most outrageous case being the one in Nanjing( the city where Japanese massacred a huge number of Chinese people in the second world war) where the judge imposed a hefty fine on a good samaritan driver who helped an old woman to her feet but was accused by the latter of knocking her down in the first place. With no surveillance camera or in-car video logging camera, it was his word against hers. Guess what the judge said? According to newspapers, he rhetorically asked the good Samairtan driver, "why did you help her up if you hadn't been the one who knocked her down?". and he found the young man guilty. How can one expect a fucked-up ruling system peopled by corrupt bastards to function effectively to create a society of harmony and warmth? Now, why do Chinese show warmth and friendship towards outsiders? well, they know you will not wrongfully accuse them, try to rob them, or pull some other scamming stunts. So they help you. but they don't trust each other and the ruling class likes it this way because it helps them in dividing and conquering . The Chinese people in China are miserable, pathetic and deserve help from outside. Some outsiders say, "why don't the Chinese people themselves stand up and knock down those cruel bastards ?" Well, they did try, as they did in the thousands of years of cold-weapon age, when goons of the ruling autocrats used swords and spears and could be countered with hoes, rakes, kitchen knives and other make-shift weapons. Now? Can your kitchen knife or plowing implement stand any chance against machine guns, jet fighters, bombs? So, you may pity them, but please understand it that they are not naturally heartless or cowardly.

Nothing illustrates your point more Winston than the recently released video footage of a woman who struck while crossing the street. Not only did the person who hit her not stop, but whats worse is dozens of pedestrians on bikes, and on foot walked past her as if she were a typical littered cigarette carton. A few minutes later a truck (who didnt see her laying there, ran over her and killed her). This woman didn't have to die, but dozens of Chinese passerby's made sure she did.

Looking at the situation in Australia, the should never have been able to buy land the way they have. The Australian government is lazy and foolish letting them buy key strategic points in the Northern Territory. If China decides it wants to start forcefully occupying Australia at any stage, the top half is already theirs. The Australian people need to take a stand on this and make their government change the laws to prevent land from being ripped out form under them.
Sad but true. PengYu Case was the straw that broke the camel's back. Getting blame with the lack of evidence just discourage everyone from lending a hand. China needs innocent until proven guilty doctrine. We already did the homework for that. In the 1600s, we had an event called the 'Salem Witch Trials'. It was a complete farce and a mockery of what justice is supposed to be. As a result, we formulated and followed innocent until proven guilty.
That's what I would categorize as a civilized country. Because public lynching, or inclination to just have kill a person rather than injure them to have lesser consequences, are almost the same from my point of view. It's a broken moral.
When I was in Beijing, me and a buddy of mine were at a nightclub and when we were coming outside, we saw a guy screaming and beating a woman who appeared to be his girlfriend. He and I stepped in, and since my friend was black out drunk and I wasn't exactly sober, I got the shit kicked out of me and he got knocked out clean. Gave the girl enough time to get away at the very least. The worst part, was that people were all around watching her get beat. This man had her in a head lock, trying to pull her clothes off. You always expect to get that magical hero strength like in movies, but that didn't happen at all for me and my buddy. She got away, and that's all the matters, but it definitely scarred me.
something like that happened in Sacramento recently and the guy was stabbed several times and almost died as a result, so you can consider yourself lucky.

It is your loss. I haven't met anyone who has regretted going to China. And go twice to catch how fast Chinese society is changing. That said, Chinese tourists can be awful (and there are of course many nice tourists as well, but they are not as noticable).

Taiwan is the country with real Chinese great tradtional and values. People are genuinely helping each other even for strangers. I've heard many of my friends lost their wallets here in Taiwan and people took the wallets to the police station most of the time.
Seems there is a lot of Christianity in Taiwan & folk who fled communist China in 1949 & afterwards? Same thing in South Korea, a strong Christian influence & they also help the down & out.

Taiwan and Hong Kong are what China could have been if not for the communist scum taking over, as if the century of humiliation wasn't enough for the Chinese people. It is a tragedy that WWII played out in favor of the communists, thus forcing the Kuomintang to retreat to Taiwan and never look back.
So to sum it up. It's not that people don't want to help out their fellow men but it's that people are afraid of their own government and laws that will punish them for helping out their fellow men.
you know, we have switched to democracy in Romania since 1989 but a lot of people exhibit a similar attitude; after 28 years they are still afraid to speak their mind, to go out and protest against corruption because they fear that they might get in trouble if they intervene. Makes me laugh sometimes - my parents still lower their voice when saying something important out in the backyard to avoid being heard by the neighbours. It takes time to change these things.
It doesn't take a ex-communist country to have people fear and have similar behaviour, up until very recently, the French were the same, and majority still is, scared to intervene in metro fights or where people get stabbed, because they don't want to get in trouble themselves. I think it's got nothing to do with the culture but with human behaviour in general, people tend to avoid situations that could get them in trouble. You'll find all over the press in France articles about "heroes" because they dared to intervene. And then articles about girls getting slapped and harassed and nobody moving a finger (see video of girl in 2018 in Paris getting harassed then violently slapped by a guy in the middle of the day on a restaurant terrasse. No one would a finger). So it happens everywhere, unfortunately
@@oliverchen9603 When I lived in Japan they were rude, they didn't try to fit in, I didn't go to China so they were visiting Japan. If I went to China and everyone was rude I would just think its part of their culture no problem, but like I said they stand out and its not good.

This so true , I am married to a wonderful caring Chinese women , but in China she runs from people who need help............Being a Aussie this goes totally against how i was brought up . Every time we land in China , the first thing she says to me .......Remember we are in China , DO NOT help anybody. We live in Singapore and this is emerging here also , so wrong , so sad.
Peter K, I am Chinese by origin but born in Malaysia. Now living in the USA. I rented a condo from a Chinese lady in the USA for 10 years, formerly married to a German American. Her air condition breaks down and she blamed me. Sat in my living room at 11p.m. demanding I paid her $650. I ran a used car business, prior to my retirement and understand the concept of how air condition works. She said , she had already got it repaired a week prior to my moving in. I told her, the a/c guy must have told you to replace it because it is old but it is cheaper to have a fix( which is not a fix, putting freon above the max, and hope for the best). I asked her, is that the way, they worked in China? This is the USA, I call the cops.

I feel so disheartened reading through the comments. I'm a Chinese, I absolutely hate some part of the bad system, the lost generation, uncivilized behaviors etc. As I am making a living overseas, it might not be super convincing for me to defend my country, BUT, I hope while the viewers pay attention to this situation, do not ignore other points in this video, friendly people, chinese offering help to total strangers without expecting anything in return, risks of being scammed etc. I know it's hard for foreigners to understand a Chinese person's perspective, but please understand there are always good and evil people and sides of society in every country. China is yet to be the developed, civilized system but it's improving. You may criticize and compare. But if you've taken your side, and watch these videos for reconfirming your conclusion how bad China is, I'm commenting for nothing.
It's hard when one has a set perspective to look at this an not feel very strong negative feelings (referring to the social experiment part - anger), but that's why it's important that someone tries to explain and give the insight as to why this stuff is happening to try an better understand a different culture and a different country. In every country you have good and bad people, plenty of stupid and plenty of problems. When it comes to hospitality to strangers, Asia is the best. I’ll trust their Airbnb over houses in the West. But I’m saddened as you are that Samaritan laws are not strong in China or corruption is in the way of progress.US had that problem so Congress made a Good Samaritan that made them immune to litigation
What I don't understand is that despite being 5000 years old, having the world's largest population, and undergoing a massive economic boom, why do Chinese people continually evoke the fact that China is "yet to be developed" as a reason for why the country and people are so morally bankrupt? I'm from Kazakhstan, which is much less developed than China, and I've never seen Kazakhstani people do a fraction of the awful things that happen on the daily in China.
This made me cry actually, I know it was all filmed in the end-a social experiment, but obviously it's based off what is really happening in China. it makes me sad to think that the citizens of a country aren't willing to stand up for one another. It's even worse when people wake up to get away from a scene only to stand from a distance and continue to watch. It sickens me.

I remember a video about a little Chinese girl, a toddler of 2 or 3 years, getting hit and then driven over(!) by several cars, all with a really slows speed and clearly after having seen the little girl lying there; no one of the many people around lifted a finger and the car drivers simply continued on their way. There is NO excuse, absolutely none, for that!! That day I realized that there is something seriously wrong with many Chinese people.
That video was heartbreaking. And that poor girl later died in hospital. At least now I know why people didn't step in. If the mother of the child blamed you for injuring her child you would go to jail for a very long time, not just pay compensation. Sure, many non chinese people would say that going to jail is totally worth it to save a child's life but in reality you wouldn't want to ruin your life that easily.
Winston, Although I live in the United States. Like you, I am exposed to many Chinese nationals on a frequent basis. This anecdotal story is in relation to a hiker being lost in the woods, and upon the Chinese national hearing about the story in the news - she was astonished and flabbergasted that the authorities would deploy “so many resources to help only ONE PERSON!” Like another commenter aptly expressed - because that’s what civilized people do!

Thanks again for your hard work towards enlightening us. You're quite right in saying this is a blight on Chinese society. I've witnessed this sort of thing many times, and luckily it has stopped when i've intervened. It makes me angry when i see people standing around gawking as someone helpless gets taken advantage - always by more than one person. They're too scared mainly, to do this as individuals - one on one. I too have witnessed first hand the kindness and generosity of Chinese people, unfortunately however, the bad points carry so much weight.
Totally right, I saw a guy get the shit kicked out of him in the street and the cops drove up slowed down then drove off and didn't even get out. I wanted to help but my wife who is Chinese dragged me away

Recommend all foreigners to read Lu Xun, he went over all these weakness of the Chinese national character in his novels and essays. Almost a 100 years after, very little has changed. Props for intervening there, Winston!
DrQuiza yes, but it was embedded during the hardcore communist times. I've been to China and I've been to Singapore and I realized how profound was the effect of the Communist Party on culture and everyday life. Singaporean Chinese were much more polite and helpful than the mainlanders.

I am very glad you had read Lu Xun already, I am a fan of Lu Xun too. Lu Xun is a famous national hero, he criticized many unjust phenomena in China, he even rejected the nomination of the Nobel Prize at that time. Lu Xun's great place is to be a Chinese, he sees these phenomena and wants to change. He sincerely hopes that the Chinese nation will become better. Winston many views are also criticizing China, but he has no such spirit as Lu Xun. It is ridiculous to compare a person who owns the right to get the Nobel Prize and a famous RU-vidr. I am a Chinese, I do not say anything about Winston at this comment, but Winston does not deserve it.

He was stating that Lu Xun gives a good insight in to character flaws that he recognised in the Chinese population.. (of which there are many and perhaps you have just added to).
I remember taking a taxi in Chengdu, and after seating, the taxi driver hit a bicycle and threw of the driver to the ground, but just shrugged his shoulders and drove on. After some complaining he pointed at the mirror, saying the guy was already getting up and fine.
My wife, my sister and me eating at a BBQ restaurant in Huizhou. I start hearing three guys shouting at the girl at the reception. I stopped eating, cause that was just something you can't ignore, but didn't want to intervene yet cause I see 10+ male staff watching as two 180+cm guys start to beat and pulll the hair of a tiny 40kg small reception girl. When shouting turned to beating I just sprang from my seat (half regretting it as I'm doing it to be honest, I realize a foreigner with two ladies I'm responsible for and 3 guys two of which are drunk and agressive. End up wrestling the most agressive one to the ground as he now turned his agression from the girl towards me, than his friend starts choking me/trying to pull me from his friend and ONLY at that point did a couple of other guys stand up and break us up. Also everybody started taking photos and trying to drink beer with me. Though to be honest I was pissed off, that I a foreigner that is always reminded he is a foreigner had to stop that MADNESS.... At least I didn't go to jail or had to pay for his injuries. P.S. everybody including staff and the crazy guy's friend, even people who supported me said i shouldn't have intervened cause 你不懂，你属外国人／老外。
I had this kind of experience once.....as my wife 'n I about to go into a Guangzhou bus terminal, I heard this young man yelling at his girlfriend or wife 'n he was proceeding to beat her up, just like u Winston, I intervened by yelling at him 'n telling him to stop beating on her or else. Being a Chinese from Canada, I don't like to see man beating up woman nor did I tolerate that kind of behavior either. But my Chinese wife on the other hand was shocked 'n from the look on her face, I can tell she was thinking, "how dare u even get involve". Then she started telling me stories about 'the broken vase' as u had mentioned accurately. She told me I can get into whole lot of trouble 'n may even cost me financially or worse. But I just didn't care what trouble it may bring me, I felt like I just have to do what I have to do. Sure enough, when we got home, she told her son how I dare got involve. So, yes, I understood exactly what u r trying to warn people about, I've been there, done that. Good job bro 'n keep on doing what ur doing, u get my support.
Exactly this. The potential risk of being sued shouldn't be a deterrent from helping someone in need. if anything they use it as an excuse for their already corrupt moral values.

I asked my wife who is from Chengdu about this. Her plain answer is that people are, as you say Winston, afraid to get involved and being caught up in something that will put them selves in trouble. Also she said they are afraid that many think there is a scam going on. It's so widely spread that people do not interfere for the mere reason they could be scamed themselves. However if they see an obvious mishap with someone in danger of losing their life or badly injured they would help. Ofcourse she said , they are not inhuman. I guess moral and thics are not camparable around the globe so I thank you for talking about such an important topic. Cheers!
What shocked me was that in a country where everyone, and I mean EVERYONE has a phone with a camera no one is taking video, taking pictures, calling the police. I mean I get it, you're afraid to intervene physically, but there is no excuse for not recording it, especially with the large crowd of rubber necker watching the whole thing!

Artemis Ares well, I meant specifically involved in an altercation like the "social experiment" situation. But you could certainly document the situation before you became involved in helping in a medical issue if you had concerns.
A few years back we had new Chinese neighbors here in the US. Their kids were in the street and a car was coming. Everybody kind of froze, the kids and parents. I ran out and pulled the kids to my side of the street because it was closer and then after the car past I walked the kids back to the mom. I grew up playing in the street so it really wasn't a big deal to me. The mom was thankful but the odd part was how surprised she was that I had helped and I didn't really understand why for a long time.
Why do you help a Chinese person, if you know for sure they are Chinese.You do not have to help them, if it is not for a good reason. Chinese people never help others, you have to learn to understand the difference. It depends.. China is a brutal society where people have learned to care only for themselves and plus, sometimes trying to help people there could end up being harm to yourself. You never know how genuine a situation is.......THAT is what they think....

I just describe the situation, how it really is I feel sorry for the world, having to deal with the bad Chinese mentality flooding around the world. I was in Hungary , speaking to a gay person : he did observe this as well, it really depends on what kind of Asian you are....He said Chinese people are not respectful.
I am a very nice, loving , decent person, and many people acknowledge this. Even an Asian female accountant, have been growing up in Asia , and working in Australia at the moment, travelling to Europe, acknowledged to me, that she was gladly surprised by the fact , she did not expect to meet , a well educated and informed person, with high morals like me, living abroad. She told me, this younger current Chinese generation has lost their morals totally, she admitted, it is all about money. And she is not that old, quite young before her fifty birthday, I guess. You , totally just prove that I am right. She did even shared/taught me something and told me to make a connection with a certain group , that try to preserve some morals. "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

In my country, if you fail to help a person in need of medical assistance (if you keep standing around, perhaps even filming or ignoring them) you can face legal consequences for denying help. If you do help someone and you might injure them while you help them (for example trying to reanimate them and breaking their ribs in the process), you will by not face any legal problems.
I've enjoyed your videos - and particularly this one. I particularly like your conclusion. When I lived in China 30 years ago, I tried to do the same as you and act the good Samaritan on the street once or twice. A foreigner can make an impression in this way - the effect may be short-lived or unwelcome, but my feeling is that such attempts are worthwhile.
My respect for this particular video as well as your others. In many ways you are in class of your own. Your moral compass shows loud and clear throughout your work. Not many of the videos here go beyond self absorbed, self congratulatory super-selfies. You are the real deal. Thank you. Btw, doing nothing on the sidelines is a phenomena that is studied in Social Psychology, which is not exclusive to the Chinese people, it is actually universal. People from all cultures tend to not intervene in a conflict, and this apparent apathy is more likely to happen in a place where there are more people around rather than an isolated place (your own experiences reflect that, you were getting helped in rural areas rather than urban areas). There are two phenomenons that are at play here, the first is called the *bystander effect* and the second one is the *diffusion of responsibility* People must be actively trained to escape from this, even trained westerners have difficulty to act upon injustices. But it gets doubly difficult if the society doesn't have incentives to heroic acts (such as social praise or official acknowledgement could be enough)
