The son of the hostel owner was playing with his toys (a rock, stick and empty soap bottle). This was the nicest hostel in the area btw... and still inside Beijing. A high GDP growth is a sign of the country being unstable. You do not simply create wealth out of nothing. If it looks, smells and sounds like a economic miracle then it is likely a bubble. Just because china builds a bunch of useless infrastructure and housing projects doesn't make it wealthy. It is simply just digging a hole and then filling the hole with concrete and saying "Hey look how productive we are". The problem with the modern economy is that it appears to believe that by just being a sassy economist you can create wealth out of nothing. When China can't take enough loans to make construction market go around they will be left with a bunch of industries that are planning on leaving China and a bunch of ghost cities.

Both countries interested in keeping a high level of military powers, the threat & talk of a possible conflict between each other helps sell that idea to the public too & maintain military financing, however the most likely place any military skirmishes between USA & China take place, and all that high tech equipment & staffing both country have, is in some type of proxy conflict far away from both China & USA themselves! It's unstable & often poor countries around the world, that the ones should be scared by a turn for the worse in USA-China relationship! Not actual Americans or Chinese especially though! For both of them it would just mean higher prices, and economic depression! For other little people, in little countries it could mean difference between life & death!!
