Pisses me off when military contractors are found to be providing substandard materials or workmanship services. These boats have 120 lives in them and are put at risk by these cheaters.
There was panic when a Chinese diesel-electric sub in the Taiwan Straits popped up alongside a Nimitz-class carrier having evaded the screening ships and submarine protecting it. Imagine the panic in the DoD when they realized the damage one Chinese sub could do to the prestige of the US Navy? The Chinese Captain and his first officer popped the hatch and waved at the Americans from their conning-tower, then went below and submerged. You can hear the laughter coming from that crew as they went home.

Look at the bow windows, that's SSRN Seaview from the TV series, USOS Seaview from the 1961 theatrical film had 8 smaller windows, not the 4 large ones
I am so glad that the US Navy finally got the nuclear powered ballistic submarine Seaview. It can do a lot of things. It has 16 vertical launch missiles for shooting into the Van Allen Belt, regular & experimental torpedoes, bow laser, electrically charged hull for those monster squid, ultrasonic weapon. But best of all is the FS-1 flying sub stored in the bow!
Excuse me, to "amputate the Van Allen Belt". That would protect us from solar flares. I read Theodore Sturgeon's novelization before I saw the movie. Sturgeon was hard pressed to make Irwin Allen's story scientifically plausible including such silly scenes as the polar ice hitting the Seaview as it *sank* . Sturgeon rewrote it so there where columns of ice going all the way to the bottom of the Arctic and they hit the bottom of the Seaview while rising. Also instead of massively increasing the Van Allen Belt (which is what nukes would do) they launched carbon dust to put a damper on the Van Allen Belt.
Yeah, they cancelled Sea Wolf because Virginia was cheaper, then it wound up being more expensive. They should ask Elon Musk to build them a submarine; he'd do it for a fraction of the cost, in half the time, with seven times the quality, 0-60 in 1.9 seconds, and he'd throw-in fart mode for free.
SSN 21 was stupid expensive... and sea wolf class is still more expensive then Virginia as for the shit Elon calls a car... he needs to stay there and deal with the problems of his "more expensive to repair then replace" electric car that will end up rotting and dumping toxic battery by products in junk yards.
@@keithtravelrn Go fulk yourself; what's in need to repair?, the car is fine; it never breaks; it never crashes. Just you need repair; and you can't be repaired, or replaced, thanks goodness.
I am sure I am not the only person that has ever thought of this; What are the capabilities of a sub that has no crew? Fill it with water, equalize the pressure. Full drone sub.
My son is on a Virginia Class sub as I type this. He gave me a tour of the boat a couple of months ago while it was moored in Norfolk. It's an amazing piece of technology. However, I did see some of the outer hull material coming off in places.

I agree with John's comment. This is not just a US problem, substandard materials are an issue for NATO navies including Canada. The steel on the new Canadian Artic Patrol Ships is of real concern as is the paint. These ships are fresh from Irving Shipyard in Halifax, Canada. A ship is only as good as the materials that go into her.
This is definitely true. Albert Einstein is often quoted as having said: "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones".
In my humble opinion, the Navy should have remained committed to the production of the Seawolf class of submarines with the capacity to upgrade factored in as newer and more effective technologies were achieved. If the reports concerning failures within the Virginia class of submarines regarding poor production qualify, forged verification documents concerning quality control, consistently large cost overruns and technology which fails to live up to its hype can serve as sobering reminders of the corruption which can exist within government contracts, coupled with the attitude of “We will just simply pass these massive costs and overcharges on to the American taxpayers.” The security of our beloved Republic and the readiness of our military forces is at stake. These elements should never be treated in such a dangerous, corrupt and potentially deadly manner.
The report I got on Seawolf was they were entirely too expensive to mass produce. Much like the old CGN Long Beach class in which the crushing expense resulted in only a single boat ever produced.
I grew up in Eastern Connecticut just about 18 miles from Electric Boat division of General Dynamics, It was impossible to grow up in that area without knowing at least one person that worked or had ties to someone at EB. Therefore the pride of the Submarine Fleet and The United States Navy was spread throughout the populace of this area. For as long as I can remember fishing in the Thames River on the New London side, the west side of the river. Fishing off "Flat Fish Rock" for Stripers or whatever was running that day. Although I never saw the "Seaview" except on the TV, and I've visited the USS Nautilus. It was a sight Watching the big "Boomers". As well as the "Fast Attack" Boats, either leaving, or coming back from patrol. Cruising up and down, The Thames River. Some people say, that we don't need so big a military or Submarine force. But as long as there are evil entities in our world. Our Submarine force is the strongest deterrent, guarding us and the world against the mad men and women across the globe! I for one am glad that the USA has the knowledge and determination to protect our country, as well as the other freedom loving countries of the world. Thanks EB and the Men and Women that work there and have worked there. That through their hard work and devotion to their jobs, keep all freedom loving people and their societies safe from the threats of the evil minded.
I agree with much of what you say but the Lunatics have the keys to the Asylum as far as American politics go and it's not just the US. I kind of get the feeling that their powers of deterrence are being challenged, 1 minute 30 seconds to Midnight, not good.
Folks, understand that hunter subs are NOT the only defense against enemy submarines. I was in the Navy during the 1970's aboard a small frigate (a ship class even smaller than destroyers of the time). But we had OUTSTANDING underwater detection equipment (not limited to SONAR). And the capability to take out an enemy sub that put WWII depth charges to shame. I can only imagine that the technology has improved since.
Yeah, I had an old master chief radar tech for a roommate , who worked on subs… said he could here individual prop wash from akula of the coast of Russia from Hawaii

The submarine showed in the beginning is from Voyage to the bottom of the Sea TV series in 1960's. The U.S. navy use both Virginia and Ohio class submarines. With the newest class in production, Columbia scheduled to be replacing the Ohio class. The Columbia is capable of satellite communication as well as firing tomahawk missiles while submerged the exact same way they fire ballistics missiles.
😆 Yeah that was called the Sea View in that old movie and series that they made back in the day. They certainly don't make them like that (movies/TV shows) no more.
Columbia will not be carrying Thawks. Since they are the replacement for the aging Trident SSBN class, whose sole purpose is nuclear deterrence, will most definitely not be carrying anything other than ICBMs. The first 4 Tridents were converted to SSGN for one of the nuclear treaties and the Navy did not want to decom boats that still had viable service life left. The The newer VAs are being fitted with the VPM, allowing them to replace the 4 SSGN. Columbia's will hide with pride and pray to God they never have to deliver their payload.
Sounds like they are building outdated and non-funktional, non-optimized equipment that have to be replaced asap. So that all sounds like a giant waste of money to me.
It’s the most deadly submarine in the world next to the Astute class. It protects our carrier fleets and hunts down Russia and Chinas nuclear subs before they launch nukes. There so quiet they follow our enemy’s without them knowing. So I’m completely satisfied withers my tax dollars go. Now go back to China or Russia troll.
As a former Sonar Technician I doubt very much that anything is outdated on these subs. There are many systems onboard that are key to the subs success like the Sonar System which are the eyes and wears of the sub while on patrol. If they are not mentioning it it is because it is very hush hush and effective. The biggest thing that guarantees success of subs on any mission is training and skills. This is one thing the silent service has in spades. Problems with the anechoic tiles is nothing new and relatively simple to correct. These subs are necessary to replace the ageing Los Angeles subs that have served us well for decades and are not a waste of money. There are few ship yards with the skills and tech to produce these subs so they MUST always be producing subs slowly or the country will lose this vital national asset. We are also producing subs for Australia.

If anyone commenting has ever served on a boat, they would know that these boats are awesome. And are a marked improvement on the older work houses, the iboats. Sure they had problems, but thats always the case when radical departure in form and function takes place. The successor boats will stand on the shoulders of these remarkable hunter killers.

Perhaps the members of Congress and House of Representatives should pay for the cost overruns of the submarines out of their exorbitant salaries? Or give them the choice of finding the actual personnel responsible and making THEM pay?
In terms of salary, congress is not highly paid. I make more than any of them by far, and I'm not rich. Of course, I don't get any of the perks they get. Still, they got into congress because they were already rich; they didn't generally get rich because they got into congress.

The mind boggles on all of the money and personnel that governments spend on their armed forces. End of the day when it comes, is that more than likely it will be some sort of biohazard that kicks it off. After all if populations are simply being wiped out what was the point of having a massive amount of hardware. That all said the safest place would probably be in a Submarine so carry on.
Substandard contractors doesn't surprise me. I refueled a sub at Newport News. We had to allow a contractor to install a system because if we did it, then we were taking a civilian job. The unions worked at a snails pace and did not have the technical skills to do all the jobs. There were systems signed off on after failed attempts of installation by civilians, so that the naval crew could reinstall it correctly to move construction forward. Hence all the over budget out of schedule nuclear refuelings. So much cya by everyone involved, but it was only way anything would be completed.

While the seawolf is a more capable deep ocean boat. The Virginias are very capable in the littorals. With the Chinese becoming the new primary threat to the navy, the east Chinese sea and the Yellow Sea are likely locations for future conflict. Both of those seas are shallow, which will play more in the favor of Virginia’s design characteristics. The Virginias are still very capable, there’s more nuance than is being described here.
The Jinping era of communist China got people thinking that PRC is a big emerging threat, but I think it has to be taken with a grain of salt. Under Obama we had the socalled pivot to asia, but the reality is that the whole time the USA was focused on the middle east and south asia (as usual), because the nations there have a history of being nuts. The backdrop to this is that the US is deployed across the whole globe. They can pivot anywhere at any time, on relatively short notice. In a matter of days amphibious assault ships could be at a chosen flash point, if the US was interested in it. Same cannot be said of Russia and PRC. The other aspect to remember is the economies and the populations. Russia and PRC are both in deep population decline, with no short term way out. Their economies are teetering on the verge of financial crises. PRC almost collapsed with the Evergrande crisis, narrowly avoided it. Contrast that to the American sphere, where the economies are strong, sucking in skilled workers from all over the world, and expanding/reshoring at a brisk pace.
