Amazing you could communicate with the black pudding lady using the phone. The lady actually spoke Mandarin with a heavy local accent. Really surprised the phone could still recognize what she was saying and translate it correctly
not sure what to make out of this. If you aware that Alipay might not work sometimes. Why don't you have a couple of hundred cash just in case? Instead of making fusses and getting for free out of kindness. These are small businesses, hardworking and kind people. I think you know there will be issues, and the locals are kind people
I discovered your channel through Backpacker Ben and have been thoroughly enjoying it. It is great watching you guys enjoy everything and each other whilst inhaling so much good food. Gets ya right in the feels. Safe travels!
Hello Alan and Shannon: I absolutely love your food adventures. Two thumbs up. I hope to see more food adventures from China. You two are brave... stinky tofu is definitely not for every palate, in a similar manner Blue Cheese or Durian isn't.
When you eat red dragon fruit for the first time, you should pay attention. Some people may experience red color in the toilet after eating red dragon fruit. Don't worry, this is a normal phenomenon.
Really enjoying your videos and adventures, travelling out on Thursday and excited to see some black pudding in the mix :) As an older guy from Dundee great to see you both doing Scotland proud :)
@@Alan_and_Shannon Shannon, I recommend that when trying new food, you don't have to put the whole thing in your mouth. Just take a nibble to discern taste & temperature before going in for more.
The leaves are perilla leaves. They’re common in Asian BBQ places. Common in Korean BBQ places and if you ever make it to Dongbei in China their BBQ has it too. So they’ll grill the meat and you eat it wrapped in perilla leaves or lettuce. Do not deep dry lol :)
Maybe in the future you guys should pay first before the vendor starts cooking, just so that you can be sure the payment will go through. The vendors make a hard living, and they should get paid, especially when you are actually making money from the videos with the vendors in them
Yea agreed! There were another RU-vid couple that goes to China and their Alipay is 50/50 too but at least they carry cash in case it doesn’t work. Those Chinese vendor makes so little already. 😢
Think of blue cheese when you eat stinky tofu. Its basically a similar idea, except one is made from fermenting milk solids and one is made from fermenting tofu. It is an acquired taste. However different street vendors make it differently so maybe this version didn't taste so good. There is also different types of stinky tofu and personally i prefer the puffier versions because they have a nice crunch when friend and have a nice fluffy center. In China, the best tasting places usually have massive lines :D
My translation app is called "話語翻譯師" (don't know what is it in English). The screen is divided into upper half and lower half. The upper half is inverted (clever design). The lower half accept what you say in many language such as English and Cantonese. The translation is show in the INVERTED upper half both in Simplify Characters and Spoken. The upper half also accepts what is said in Mandarin. Super convenient. I am a Hongkonger, sometimes I need it to translate Cantonese to Mandarin.
Glad you guys ended the night with that nice crispy pork belly! Seems very tasty. 9:07 That little kid in red finally garnered the courage to ask for a photo with you, but got "rejected", lol.
I ate it once, but it wasn't black. The stand that sold it smelled like sewage, though, so I was expecting the worst. However, once the tofu was fried it didn't smell that bad at all, and it tasted like regular deep-fried tofu that was a little fermented. All in all, it tasted OK, but I was disappointed that it didn't have a stronger taste.
Now this is an interesting and entertaining video about food culture in China in sharp contrast to shots of empty dormitories and disused farms. Good job 😊
hi friends, if your Internet in China is not so good, maybe you can exchange some more cash, so as to avoid the embarrassment of being unable to pay! Just a few suggestions. Have fun
I totally agree with you: the dragon fruit with a white core is tasteless haha... However, I don't think I have ever tried one with a red core... I love the one that is yellow on the outside, and very sweet on the inside and where I live, we import them from Colombia and it is called pitaya.
The stinky tofu you got was a bad one. It’s supposed to be puffy on the inside and crispy on the outside, not soggy. Just a tip, buy from stalls that specialise in only one or two things, you’ll get better food this way
@@Alan_and_Shannon maybe you can ask some locals Give them cash and they transfer & top-up your Alipay digital wallet so that you don't have to carry them
I am guessing your digital payment is linked to your bank card, so it's a hit and miss, probably the authentication problem on the bank card side. If you are using Chinese bank, that's another story. Chinese block chain tech is very advanced, which is why the local digital payment works in a blink of an eye.
What exactly do you mean? Alipay can bind BOTH credit and debit card to it. As long as they have the Mastercard or Visa affiliations. Is that not correct?
@@k.k.c8670 I was told some of the vender only accept transaction from the debit card combined Alipay customer, some of the venders accept both. If you met one of the venders only accept the debit card ones, then it will not work. Some times for me as a Chinese, I prefer to pay via my credit card, but it wont work, then I have to choose the debit card for payment. since I combined both cards with my Alipay.
@@k.k.c8670 It's up to the vender's choice, I think they can preset it, if they want to accept debit card accounts based transaction or both debit card and credit card accounts based transaction
Some street-stalls dont use business Alipay QR code, they use personal QR code. So foreign payments will fail. That's also why you hardly ever fail to make payments in big shopping malls.the small vendors do not need to pay taxes. 用中文总结一下, 支付宝为什么 有时候付款会失败 原因是 有些商户用的个人收款码 并不是店铺收款码,个人收款码是不能收外币的。 回复
Oh my goodness you're visiting my moms hometown! It's amazing how a pair of Scottish couples are making a video about the snacks of my third tier city hometown in China and I'm watching it in Canada. Please see my comment and know that you HAVE to try the old friend rice noodle 老友粉at Shuji 舒记 that's the heart and soul of nanning food with the pungent fermented bamboo shoots that are out of this world
@@Alan_and_ShannonBy watching at your vlog, we should all be around Nanning at the same time. I left Nanning right before the New Year. What a miss. Well, if RU-vid would have pushed you guys to me earlier, we could meet up. Street foods nowadays are becoming boring, as they are not much different everywhere. Local delicacies and famous wee restaurants were what I crashed into in my last visit. Anyway, enjoy your journey there, and keep the good jobs coming! Take care you both 👍
I don't know how this was recommended to me, but I'm so glad it did! Aye, those pork blood chinese sausages are the closest you'd get tasting Scottish. Go for it, ye know. I'm so happy ye found it and like it. Let me tell ye a few of me Taiwanese friends were so fond of haggis and black pudding when they were over in Scotland. Well, just like ye both of course, that's the closest they got that reminded them the taste of home. Nowadays, those pork blood chinese sausages are more for the older generation when you move south towards Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Somehow the younger generation tend to steer away from them. Bring that spicy chili back to Scotland with yous. Never know, ye can get some side hustle going. Enjoy yourselves and be adventurous.
stinky toufu is fried and is actually good. But the fermented amaranth stem is really bad. My mom steamed it with rice once separately, but it smelled so awful that I refused to eat the rice.
@@Alan_and_Shannon I’m a Chinese myself. I can say I’m really not a fan of stinky tofu. It’s all about personal preference lol. My Japanese teacher who is from Japan does not eat sashimi (raw fish)
If it is blue cheese, you may accept it, but Stinky tofu is essentially similar to blue cheese. The difference is that one is plant protein, the other is animal protein. Moreover, the blue cheese is eaten raw, and Stinky tofu is heated, so Stinky tofu is safer without the comfort zone. Stinky tofu is not the birthplace of Stinky tofu. Twenty years ago, people in Guangxi did not have this kind of food. Stinky tofu was only sold because it was famous, so the taste is not the best. The best Stinky tofu is in Hunan Province. So don't refuse just because of one attempt, you should continue to try where you have found many people buying. A small suggestion, even if it's street food, please check the local provincial snacks and focus on them.Although I am not from Guangxi, I have been to Guangxi. Guangxi is famous for its natural scenery. Welcome to Guangxi!Although I am not from Guangxi, I have been to Guangxi. Guangxi is famous for its natural scenery. Welcome to Guangxi!
First of all, love you guys, and maybe there is solution for you to solve you payment issue, when you come to a stand or a shop that works, you can ask them to do a money change, like you transfer them 100 Yuan, and they give it back, instead of going back to your visa card, it should be in your balance of alipay, when you use the money in balance, it is guaranteed to make the payments.
I'm glad to finally see you come to my hometown city. I'm very welcome. There is a lot of delicious food here, but it's a pity that you couldn't find them due to communication problems. Many locals may not be able to find really delicious food. In Nanning, you can almost buy the largest variety and cheapest fruits in the world!
Thank you Alan and Shannon. Nice video!! I regret I didn't post these earlier: 1. A recommendation to someone who wants to discover Nanning: 平西夜市和建政路夜市听说最近更多好吃的,中山路夜市感觉已经没落了. 2. jialou属于南宁当地特色,我觉得挺好吃的,可能是那个摊子做得味道一般般, 不知道加了酸甜酱味道会不会好一点. 3. Rice noodles (ingredient similar to pho) are a must-have in Guangxi, 螺蛳粉stinky rice noodle and 桂林米粉Guilin rice noodle are famous. In Nanning, 老友粉laoyou rice noodle in Nanning, other than 舒记(shu ji) I would recommend 友缘老友(you yuan) or 北湖老友 (bei hu). 卷筒粉rolled rice noodle is also wonderful. 4. Lots of delicious local food in Nanning has sour and refreshing tastes, so if you like that kind of taste, Nanning is a must-go!
24:37 here the label stand on your left side guide to a drink store ,they sell high quality drinks made by tea, really tasting ,price close to Starbucks, younger people prefer that than street stand
Alan says he never went to a place that the temperature fluctuates up and down in a few days...I don't think he has counted Scotland, where I've experienced 4 seasons in 1 round of golf! He must have got lucky and was indoors when it happened.
It's a matter of the handling fees for connecting international credit cards to Alipay. Some stores are unwilling to absorb it, which will of course cause your payment to be inconsistent. If you have a Chinese bank card, you can completely avoid these problems.
I'll be in China in 2 weeks. What translation app was used here? Which app would you recommend? I also have Alipay already downloaded but I'll prepare to pay with cash too. Thanks!
The food is freshly mad,if you don't want it, it can't sell it to other guests, so it's free for you. Seeing that you can go to the next booth to pay, you should go back and pay the money to the family. It's not a good look at you guys. Business is not easy. Think of others.
It’s because the womans Ali pay was not set up correctly and it doesn’t allow foreigners to pay for items and are not food/drinks or goods. It happens about 10% of the time, going back to the Lady wouldnt have made any difference
I really admire your healthy stomach, and if I keep trying strange foods from all over the place, I'm likely to vomit and have diarrhea. However, it is not recommended that you always eat these snacks, because they usually put too much oil and salt in the snacks, eat more easily become obese. I hope you guys have fun.
Must only eat stinky tofu from vendors who sell nothing but it, they have the best because their sales based only on selling it, if it's not good then no one buys it. Good stinky tofu makes the entire street smells, if it doesn't then it's not good. 😂
