China and Egypt will hold a series of cultural events throughout 2016 to mark a year of closer exchanges between the two countries.
To inaugurate the China-Egypt Cultural Year, a grand ceremony will be held in the Egyptian resort city of Luxor, followed by more than 100 different kinds of events in both China and Egypt.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to join Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi at the 3500-year-old Luxor temple for the opening ceremony, which will also mark the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
A select group of Chinese artists who are deaf and mute will perform their exquisitely choreographed dance - named the Thousand-hand Bodhisattva - under these huge pillars of the temple for the first time. However, one member is making an emotional return.
"When I joined this dance group in 2004, my first dance abroad was in Egypt. I was 15 then. I never thought I’d perform it in Egypt again," said Chen Cen, a dancer at the China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe.
Chen added that though it may turn out to be her last performance abroad, the cultural treasures will always be passed on to new and younger performers.
The highest-level performance brings together the best dancers from both countries, with the performers making dedicated preparations for the show.
"I feel like a family because after the second time. The first time it was new but actually the second time it’s like a family working together. We understand each other much more," said an Egyptian ballet dancer named Sahar.
Cultural authorities said that 63 events will be held across China, and another 39 in Egypt. The activities will cover music, dance, film, and literature, as well as personnel exchanges between youths.
