What about the 100 years of humiliation that we've heard so much about? Wasn't China repeatedly invaded, their people brutalized (e.g. Rape of Nanjing), their lands taken, and forced to accept 'deals' that were less than advantageous? Doesn't 100 years of humiliation disprove your point?
I revisit this speech often, as Dr. Jin's skill in presenting complex content to fit a wide range of audiences that she has anticipated is a skill for anyone to take note of and learn from as well, thank you Dr. Jin 🙏
Thank you Dr Jin for the comprehensive and balanced review on the China economy. I wish I had Dr Jin as my professor as I enjoyed the 30+ minutes speech very much. In my school day, my professors were all very boring and lack of communications skills, so I fell asleep quickly. LSE students are so lucky!
I am glad Dr. Keyu Jin is a Professor of Economics. She apparently understands economies at such a fundamental level (which obviously she should) and is a talented and wise communicator that she is smart enough not to throw complex academic concepts into a discussion that does not require it. If rural China has such a massive 800 million people potential that is not being adequately tapped, but only 600 million urban dwellers, it means that China can continue to advance radiply as those rural people are trained and brought into the mainstream. Obviously not including children, the disabled, and the elderly.
Clear, engaging, and eloquent delivery. Very educational. I appreciate that Dr. Jin’s speech caters effectively to a wide international audience of varying degrees of knowledge.
Dr. Jin’s presentation on China is very good but… In what context do you define China’s economic downturn if we can even say there is one based on China’s governence model (misunderstood in the West) and “on-a-dime” economic and geopolitical moves to protect it from US and Western imperialism, economic weaponization, and militarization? She portrays China primarily by the Western (predominately US) economic rules based order created without any involvement from China and other Asian countries to the extent that the US purposely blocks China’s rights in setting policy under the mandates of the WTO, and IMF. The China she “visions” is the China primarily BEFORE the hostile actions by the US, West, NATO who are accelerating aggression as a byproduct of Russia beating, and militarily winning (>95%) the US/NATO Proxy War in Ukraine. Russia’s geoeconomic, and geopolitical position plays an important role in China’s current economic and strategic moves. As an outcome of US/EU/UK sanctions/hostiles toward Russia its economy is now ranked #4 in the world by GNP defined by PPP! #1 in the EU! Her discussions on local governance innovation and the “movement” West of economic development is not quite on target. It’s much more dynamic, and statistic’s show economic development in the “West” is greater than China’s “near-and-off-shoring” to overcome tariffs and sanctions. For example by transportation infrastructures, new trade corridors, trade zones, from Chongqing, Kunming, etc. into SE ASIA, EURASIA, and other locations. I wish she discussed: The importance of education and academic excellence, with the most recent research documenting China now outdistancing the West. The Multipolar World, Global Majority - Development of a new economic order inc. BRICS, BRI, SCO, others. How could we have gotten a more rounded “real time” snapshot on China’s current conditions? The content of the program would have been very different if it was presented by a China scholar/expert in China who was intimately connected with the government, and their domestic, geoeconomic, and geopolitical development within the context of a MULTIPOLAR WORLD, and China as a member of the GLOBAL MAJORITY. Keyu has been consistent in demanding more stimulus from the Chinese Govt except this time she's taken a softer stance in siding with the rentiers and financiers, and acknowledged that the unbeaten, potentially treacherous path China is taking is a necessary one as the western model is proving to be a dead-end and leading to feudalism. As an aside, I never thought about it this way but the sanctions that force Chinese companies to setup overseas are inadvertently forcing them to learn how to become MNCs.
Those who said China's economy is collapsing are from countries with only 1.0% or even negative growth rate. Please note that IMF adjusted the growth rate of China recently.
Those countrys are already rich and dont need much growh anymore!China is still quite poor and already has a very Low Birthrates!Chinas birthrate is around 1 and Germanys around 1.5!Thailand birthrate is 1 and a Lot of people Work still for $2 a hours in factorys!This wont end well!
Always enjoyed her clear-minded, factual and clean cut analyses of the Chinese situation. But it's time to jump out of the western/London/even Keynesian model and think along the line how Chinese people behave economically within the political and "market" setting.
Hmmm....quite superficial desk analysis and with a lack of critical thinking. Basically just stating a lot of general facts without deeply analyzing them in a Chinese context. Seems to be representing official Chinese narrative and treating the situation as just a case of superficial fluctuations....which it likely is not. The crisis is systemic and the cure is unpredictable. The necessary changes have no clear model in the Chinese system. They situation will continue until it breaks...China seems not able to get out of this trap in a controlled way. Listing the "what" does not really tell "how".
In previous interviews, Jin is also very dovish and apologetic about the Chinese macroeconomic environment. One would expect that she would be more upfront now based on the current news coming out of China. It's impossible to ignore that political decisions are wrecking Chinese economy. How she does it is an art.
@@hyhhy There is a whole emerging field of proxy measures designed specifically for China, ranging from import stats in other countries to electric light cover, etc. She should reference some of this work.
