I am Chinese and I used to live in the US. I returned to China by the end of 2015. After living in China for about 2 years I already realized all those issues Serpentza was talking about, and everything is obviously going backward these days. I appreciate Serpentza for speaking up about those issues. You may assume Chinese are not affected by all those backward rules and propaganda, but for us Chinese with foreign spouses, we're greatly affected. My husband is a foreigner from Africa, we had super tough time in China and we were also not allowed to check in most hotels. There's no long-term solution for us in China so we left this year.
@nimacao9159
@nimacao9159 5 лет назад
Sometimes it's not Chinese being too fragile, you should really watch your choice of words there. 'To a Chinese' is really stereotypical and a bit racist. Clearly a lot of educated and open-minded, mostly younger generation(with vpn) and some first scholars born in late 60s and early 70s, would think more critically and sure won't be pissed off by what SerpentZA says. There's a particular term 'wumao' referring to those brainwashed communist puppets. While it's very wrong and hateful to say every Chinese is ignoring what's going on with our nation and just attacking those who point out the issues.

Another thing - the western financial crisis of 2008 coincided with what I dub the "Color TV" moment of China. SerpentZA and guys like myself in China pre-2007 remember when literally the entire male population wore black vinyl shoes, white socks (MJ style) with black pants, and white or brown collared shirts. Seas of black and white with laowai "Where's Waldo" moments. Then, the streets changed from black&white to color.

Greetings from a fossil. In the 1950s many of my toys were made in Japan. A lot them had inertia motors in them. Roll it on the wheels a few times, set it down and it takes off by itself. One thing deeply impressed me. Little cars and such were stamped out of sheet metal and painted like a real car. I am not sure how they did that, but I got the distinct impression the material was cut out of beer cans. They were very, very cheap. Japanese imports were so common we used to say if you turned Hell upside down it would say Made in Japan on the bottom. This was like 10 or 15 years after WW2. When I read The Art of War, I believe I saw a passage about making cunning artifacts to sell to the opposition. He didn't say why exactly. When Japan sought to rebuild their industry, US quality control specialists were sent to them. While quality control methods were well developed in the USA, their use has been hit or miss. Japanese products had an inferior reputation, and with good reason. It looked like they are in dire need of some quality control. I suspect nobody thought they would take it as gospel and run with it the way they did. They left us behind. China could easily do the same. However I don't think they have the national character of copying and improving, at least to the extent the Japanese do. So small beginnings, greater ends. From little acorns mighty oaks grow. And more to the point, pennies add up to dollars. Many drops turn the mill. All it takes once this is realized is a strategic plan. While there was some irritation in the USA at seeing the old antagonist prosper, I has always seemed to me that they took Ben Franklin to heart, while we wandered astray. Whose fault is that?

John Hardin very to the point my comrade, as proud chinese people, witnessing the fast changes going on in our home country is amazing. Picturing 50 years ago, millions of Chinese people were starving to die when the famine came, then 50 years later we are having a good life with the party leading us to the brighter future. Now China is facing a crucial time that stepping up to be the no1 economy group in the world and this hurts some people especially the US while China is getting stronger their advantage and status weakened, they get irritated the same time trying their best to prevent this to happen. No matter what has been shown to people, money talks, wait and see which one can be the strongest and yes we believe in communism, when you grew up with it that became your faith.

Japan has been in a slump for a few decades now. There's a reason why games consoles despite being invented there don't take off like they do in the West. The most common gaming machine is an 80s arcade machine! Japan was a late adopter of smart phones despite being one of the first to integrate live chat and emails into phones since the 90s. There's a reason why cds and vhs cassettes are still available to buy in Japan. Those Asimo robots haven't changed much since being shown off over a decade ago. Boston dynamics seems leagues ahead despite being a far younger company. Technologically they are stagnant and slow to change. It may be due to the falling birth rate. Japan isn't as technologically advanced as we are told. I think it's an image we have of them that is outdated.

surfallday ... Lol thank you for the friendly response, however I think you'll find that's up to the Chinese government, not little ole you ... You don't get to decide who stays in China and who doesn't ... Just as I don't get to decide if you wish to live and work in a "western" country ... It's up to the immigration department of said country. It's none of my business ... You are also terribly mistaken if you think China wants absolutely no "western influence" at all ... If that's the case then Chinese people should live up to their words and not drive western branded cars ... BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Range Rover, Tesla, Jaguar, VW, Chrysler, Audi, Ford etc ... Chinese people also love European clothing brands more than Europeans themselves 🤔 ... Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci, Hermes etc etc ... These brands are more popular in China than the "western" countries they originate from ... There are also thousands and thousands of Chinese students studying in the US and Europe, so why would they go to the trouble of moving halfway across the world to study in a western university if they want "no western influence" ?? ... Especially when there are plenty of good universities in China ... China is a great country and has a bright future ahead, due to the hard work of it's citizens, but to say China wants "no western influence" is a little short sighted ... It would be more realistic to say China wants "less" western influence than it currently has, which is more achievable.

On another note, my Chinese wife just got her Italian residence permit renewed for 5 years. Here are some of the things she is entitled to as a result : - equality before Italian law - equal access to public healthcare, education, social security (for her, our children, and even her family if they were to move here) - Full access to the job market, as an employee or self-employed - Full and equal access to property ownership - Right to permanent residence after 5 years - Right to Italian citizenship after 5 years - little perks like freedom of speech and association, rule of law, etc. I remember how it used to be the same for me in China, as a laowai married to a local. And that status is as follows : - no equality before Chinese "law". - no access to public healthcare, education and Chinese "social security". Will have to pay from your own pocket, ditto for your children if they're not Chinese. - No access to the job market. Residence permit only allows you to stay there doing nothing (for one or two years at a time). If you're caught working you will be deported. Residence permit can be converted into a work visa, but you need to find a company willing to sponsor you, which most don't do or can't afford to do (procedure is a hassle). - unfair access as a self-employed, i.e. if you want to start a business you need to put a bag of cash upfront first, to the tune of 100 000 euros. Only other option is finding a Chinese associate, but he better be reliable because in case of legal disputes Chinese "law" will always rule in his favour (see also point 1). - big restrictions on property ownership - can never get a permanent residence permit. - can never become Chinese - rule of lol? Every single Chinese people have this pathetic imperialism mind that Chinese people are superior over any human kind. That's why when you go to China, they can be racist and discriminate against anyone other than Chinese, and they believe that being Chinese makes themselves above the law anywhere else other than in China. China is practicing capitalism? If you believe that, you know nothing about China. If China is a capitalist country, North Korea is also a democratic and capitalist country.

I really miss the old days in China. Back in 2008 there was no great fire wall, and until around 2013 people can discuss western democracy freely on Weibo. In recent years nationalism grows rapidly especially among young Chinese students. They cannot tolerate any people saying anything bad about China, and they cannot distinguish between Chinese people and Chinese government, anyone criticize the government may be considered as a traitor nowadays. Sad.

Hmmm...been living in Beijing for 3 months...absolutely no difficulties with anything...not in the least...in fact, pretty easy. I have medical insurance, but I don't even bother with these hospitals. I can get a medical card in any government hospital, pop in and out with prescribed medicine in 10 mins. Sure, I can't speak for other cities, but all the foreigners I know love Beijing. We have NO plans to leave!!!
@kaygee301
@kaygee301 5 лет назад
10 minutes? Which hospital did you go to? It took me hours of waiting just to see a normal doctor at Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital北京清华长庚医院, even though my boss made an 'appointment'. The Peking University People's Hospital 北京大学人民医院 I found was a bit better about that, but still no way a 10 minute wait. I had a lot of trouble getting a sim card for my phone, waiting hours in line for the bank, had issues with not being allowed to go to hotels, having police officers showing up at my door and asking for all the documentation I have because my sister stayed in my flat for 3 days for a stop over to Germany.(Edit: I should point out we did everything legally and had her register with the police before she stayed over). Had people say degrading things to me on the street because I'm overweight. Waiting hours to get other friends 'registered' to stay with me, even though they stayed for one night because they were going to another part of China. Hey, just realized you've only experienced Beijing summer. I tell people the winter for me was miserable, but the summer here was pretty great. I also know, I have a bad reaction to the pollution that most foreigners don't get, so I can understand why it would be a better experience for them. Overall, I think Beijing in the summer is a lovely place to stay, so I would like to try to go south to a warmer place, with less pollution in the winter. I would also love to improve my Chinese, I'm halfway through HSK 3, because I think you cannot really integrate into a place without knowing the language. Give it as long as Winston has been in China, then see how you feel. Everywhere has positives and negatives, in no way do I think either China or my home country is at all perfect. I could go on, but it's already quite an interminable post.
@paulappleby7033
@paulappleby7033 5 лет назад
Er, wait a minute...what do you mean by a 'normal' doctor? Try going to Sijiqing, I usually use tihs one. 2 doctors speak English fine and I am in and out in no time. Beijing Haidian hospital also - quite busy but still I muddle through in less than 2o mins. Wait, you are serious??? I got a SIM card in ten mins, my wife and daughter have SIM cards, no prob...waiting in banks?? I have accounts at Construction bank and Standard chartered, no probs...I am not a one man band here, I work with about a hundred expats...life if pretty easy man, you just have to have the right attitude and find out the best ways to do things. I guess we all help each other with little tips here and there. Actually I didn't like the summer, after 4 years in dry Uzbekistan I couldn't stand the humidity. But the autumn was perfect. And as for the winter, well fortunately there are a million and one things to do in warm indoor places for the kids...and an extensive subway system. So am I bothered? No, especially when we get almost a month off over February and are going to Philippines....so cheers and good luck.@@kaygee301

It's interesting that you'll assume it's because of my bad attitude that these things didn't come easy to me. These are just facts, feeling or no feelings because I am a person who doesn't mind waiting, except when it's very early in the morning and I'm dreadfully ill. Perhaps also that different times, places, illness are all factors that dictact different waiting times. Plain facts: I've waited for 2 hours to be seen. I've also waited as fast as 30minutes but never 10minutes in and out. I was denied a Sim card at the first place after we waited a very long time in line. We got our number, went and had afternoon tea, and still waited another half an hour when we got back but I couldn't get a Sim card. Just plain facts. If that didn't happen to you, great. But not everything is as smooth and organised as you make it out to be for everyone. I have had other friends with similar banking issues, and others with none. I agree that for the majority, Beijing is a nice place to stay. Subway, online payments, cheaper living cost, helpful people, rich history, beautiful language, delicious food, fun activities for all ages, cheap Didi, there aspects are great. Also, which country do you come from, what job are you doing?

@@Shenzhou. It's kinda funny really, when the root cause of your complaint can be found in any mirror. I had in the back of my mind when I wrote the phrase "you guys both speak Chinese ok" that it might troll someone like you out of the woodwork, but I figured that it was sufficiently played down to reflect acknowledgement of moderate ability rather than praise of high proficiency. Amusing that it was high enough praise to trigger your desire to educate me of the truth of the matter... I mean, I'm suggesting that he, a South African White, go to bits of Africa (probably not ZA), where there might be Black Africans with whom his prime common language is Chinese, and that it would be interesting to see what that conversation looked like. I'm not expecting startling language ability between the 2 foreigners with the same common language. And as a non Chinese speaker I'm fully expecting subtitles and wild gesticulation to be my only way into the conversation. And for you as a Chinese speaker you get to laugh at MULTIPLE foreigners who can in your opinion barely speak Chinese as they attempt to communicate across a centuries old racial divide where tensions and violence run just below the surface and any wrong move in communication could trigger deep offense. Why are you not encouraging this? So what the foreign guy doesn't want to pretend to be Chinese... big deal. Would the Chinese ever *truly* accept the weird white guy who is desperate to fit in? It is impossible to assimilate a culture, the culture assimilates you.
