I hear you. I'm 41 and I work my 40-53 hr a week job fine, sleep 6-7 hours and spend my other free time online. I still get bills paid, still go out with friends, still get food. But I'm online as much as possible. When I have my weekends off, I am online as much as possible. i have amazing friends online, I enjoy learning as much as I can. I both love and hate how I can google something and then a.d.d. onto 500 other things I see that I grow curious over. I also dislike how, instead of trying to use my memory to remember something I forgot (say the name of a show i used to watch as a kid or what ever), I will look it up online instead.

The underlying problem that they're dealing with isn't 'internet addiction', or 'gaming addiction'; its the sense of depersonalization, and sometimes outright sociopathy that comes from removing oneself from 'people' for an extended period... [hate to admit it, being that I am a bit of a gamer myself, but many 'western gamers' are complete assholes; their mentality leads to them thinking primarily of themselves and their goals, and viewing others as obstacles or tools, with many of them being fairly narcissistic and antisocial irl. I've never been much for 'competitive play' and 'zero sum games myself' though] The difference is one of culture; they view their connections to other people are important, western society views them in a utilitarian fashion. Hell, we condone people being absolute assholes so long as it 'gets the job done', or 'pays the bills.' A little extreme perhaps... but making someone feel the absence of what they're missing [in this case, their family, the lack of -actual- personal contact, real relationships with real people] goes a long way to having them understand that they are in fact missing something.

Psychologically, anything can be an "addiction" if you have poor boundaries and impulse control, but you don't get physical withdrawal symptoms from "internet addiction", there is no "high", there are no real "withdrawal clinics" that use actual developed treatment methods, only the kind of money-grab "camps" that'll release your children traumatized for life afterwards. Addiction is treated with therapy, not violence and oppression. Besides, the most obvious evidence is in the video itself, it's enough to take a look at these children and their parents to realize how ill prepared and utterly lacking in parenting skills these people are. They have no idea what they're doing or what can be done to change the situation in their own home, they'd rather put their children in the charge of abusive sociopaths than educate themselves on the topic and see what else can be done, or try to understand the actual reasons behind their child's misbehavior. They don't even think about the potential psychological damage they're causing which is going to be far worse than any "internet addiction" these neglected kids might have.

I think this is appropriate if it’s at the point where you’re wearing a diaper, but I also spend probably 7hrs a day on the internet and I see no problem with it. I still make six figures, pay all my bills, go to the gym, have many friends, plan fun trips abroad, and date girls. I think what people miss when they say “internet” is that the internet has replaced many things and combined them into one. For example when I waste time on the internet I am: Watching tv Listening to music Chatting with friends Shopping Paying bills Booking flights/hotels/activities Researching trips Reserving restaurants Reading about history Looking through photo albums Managing my investments Playing video games Checking email Requesting taxis Reading news/magazines Hitting on new girls and lining up dates Checking the weather Sharing my feelings through comments And so on. Before the internet, people did all of these things separately but now with technology, all people see is someone with their face buried in their smartphone or laptop with headphones, and they think,”wow what a zombie.” No! I’m not a zombie I’m doing exactly what I want to be doing. I’m a very functional and productive member of society as I’m very efficient with the internet. There’s no problem here move along!

I would kindly like to ask, do you know what it does to a parents heart, especially to a mom, to watch a good kid flushing all of his time on games, etc., instead of preparing themselves to live independently? Have you raised a child into adulthood? (Yes, I have. 3 of them.) Not to say that there shouldn't be time for recreation, and rest... but that's not what's at stake here. Also hardship often has a way of helping people to bond (if they have the right attitude). What doesn't kill you, should make you stronger.

OverdraftRanch I think a good reason young people in particular are drawn to their own realities is because this one doesn't offer freedom and self actualization. What kind of life is one where your brief experience of consciousness is wasted on tasks that don't enrich your life 50 hours a week or more. For what? The economy? An economy that's run by people who try to acquire as much money and assets as possible before they die, who don't seem to realize the futility. It's too bad parents become the bearers of the burden of their "unachieving" children which is another reason among myriad why they should be demanding for a proper welfare state. Yet even the allegedly democratic nations don't seem to manage to do that well. Which leads me to two possibilities, either the people want societal problems such as this, or, they don't live in real democracies. This all also assumes there is enough work available that could sustain these people, and it's a terrible assumption. Now it's all either very high requirement work which demands a lot of education or very low requirement work which doesn't pay well enough to live humanely, if at all. To blame youths or even to try to find the problem among them is a futile effort since the system created them.

Lot of schools in China have iron bars on every window like a prison to stop kids from jumping down, children have to study non-stop for up to 16 hours a day without any break, and if the teachers don't like you they'll humiliate you in front of everyone and even force your friends to start hating you... if I had to live in conditions like that for 9+ years, I'd probably also end up a game addict and try to use the internet as a mental painkiller

Kenttheclark Yeah, except perhaps only slightly. There are many many teenagers, kids, and adults with problems just as bad here in the west. And they have even more of a sense of entitlement in North America, I've observed.

I am surprised that the comments have been blaming the kids technology usage and not the barbaric treatment of the kids from a perceived problem. Learning moderation is healthy, but in this day and getting ahead of the curve with web technology and internet culture is a huge asset. Kids growing up without the internet will be at a huge disadvantage in most workplaces.

+Fata Morgana That's not how addiction works. Nobody's gonna quit the internet for a month because a random stranger on the internet says "Try not to use the internet for a month". You're addicted when you start sacrificing very important things just so you can play those games or can sit on facebook/youtube all day long, or when you can't stop thinking about internet when you're on an awesome holiday trip.

Getting good grades is probably the most important thing in Chinese schools, therefore this is what the students try to do 95% of the time. They rarely get time or opportunities to do something else. All they have to do is to focus on their studying. When I was in gr.7, for instance, every art and music class - sometimes even gym class was taken by either Chinese or Maths or Science (or subjects which people consider are the "more important") teachers to give us extra classes. I'm not saying that everyone there is hopeless - because I do know many friends who I admire and I'm sure will be successful, but many more are struggling desperately and even giving up, because they are not exactly good at academic stuff and therefore think themselves helpless and useless. This is exactly what happened to a friend of mine. She has not yet - fortunately - given up, but she does feel depressed because she thinks herself dumb and helpless, while in truth she is one of the most caring, kind-hearted and hard-working people I've ever met, and I felt quite heart broken when she thought so. Even if some people do not yet know where their interests lie, they almost never get a chance to find out because, as I've said above, they are told to only focus on studying. There are two big exams in China, one to get into high school and the other to get into university, and those are what students spend their whole 9 (or 12) school years preparing for. They cannot see beyond that, because they only set their mind on these two exams and getting good grades on them. Hence - I'm finally getting into my point :P - it's easy for students to get "addicted" to Internet and games because they help them to set their minds on something else. They are able to be someone they would like to be. I guess this is probably the same case for many people enjoying gaming - but it's dangerously easy to get addicted to this kind of "fulfilling" feeling in games, esp. if you barely get to choose anything IRL. As for health... well, since gym classes can be cancelled and students are always told to focus on their studying, it's kind of neglected... Of course, not ALL students are in this kind of state, and Chinese schools are certainly not like hell, either. It's just that I've been thinking about these for a long time, for I see so many people spending hours and hours online and are completely indifferent to their RL studying or even jobs. And this is the answer I come up with. It's not the one and only reasons - but it is indeed one of the reasons, which makes this kind of camps completely useless and unhelpful because the students will still need to face their stressed study life once they leave. It would be much more helpful to simply teach them the way to deal with stress. :S

Cherrie W. Yeah, both China and Japan put a lot of pressure on kids to get high marks in school. Too much pressure honestly. I can understand them wanting that escape but there's better ways. If their health starts failing I'm willing to bet they would look back on their younger years and wish for that health back, health they wasted doing nothing but gaming and internet surfing. Only young once after all and, being a gamer myself, I understand the appeal and how it can be tempting to get lost in the games when life gets tough and stress levels are up. But I also understand the need for some balance and moderation. I guess I'm a bit bias on the topic too though, being someone who's poor health (genetics and physical trauma that were beyond my control caused it, far from self caused considering I was a workout nut before I got sick) prevents me from going out and doing things that require some physical strain I look at the situation with those kids and go "What I wouldn't give to have the health they're wasting!" but, well, I guess we all find our escapes and comfort in different ways. As for your friend, sounds like she has some good qualities and being hard working is far too under-appreciated these days, it's a quality I wish more people had. Plus book smarts is far from the only measure of intellectual ability, some learn better with experience, like myself, others are more knowledgeable in creative fields so your friend may do just fine after all the academic stuff is done with.

Nobody would agree that what you do online is wrong, but there are those people, particularly in the millennial generation who became dependent on the Internet for purposes other than personal necessity, education and work. I have a cousin who happens to have the same issue. Either he's on his computer playing Minecraft for over 8 hours a day or playing Candy Crush on his iPhone to the point that it is interfering with his physical and psychological well-being and relationship with his family.

I corrected two other mistakes in that sentence. Reading and writing are important and there's no reason a person can't use the internet while drinking beer and doing drugs. If you realize that you have a problem you should do something about it! Change does not come without sacrifice, you should well know that. What works for me is having a plan, or a list of things I have to do everyday : the list helps me focus on things I have to get better at or things I should avoid. If i dont have a list i find it hard to control myself and I do whatever I feel like doing. Remember that changing yourself is not an easy thing, and it does not happen from one day to another, you have to try to improve yourself day by day even if just a little. Even if you fail it does not matter, the important thing is getting back up and remembering that you are doing this for yourself and for your own well being. addiction specialist ey? I suffer from this internet addiction and i have come to the conclusion that there is no way to beat this addiction. I have tried to change it up many times but i just end up being miserable. I just cant understand the concept of subjecting myself to a life of responsibilities and giving up what i like to do. Its like trying to ask a fish to quit breathing water and breath air instead. I feel like the only way to beat it is if somehow i believed that self infliction is good. How could i possibly achieve that? Here i am on the internet everyday letting time slip by, time that im running out of to get a better career. Even knowing this i cant seem to break free from this, knowing that this will ultimately lead to living a crappy life working a low wage job for a living. Am i just programmed to die? (because working low wage job for a living is pretty bad and i might as well be dead)
