The estranged wife of President Nelson Mandela, Winnie Mandela,
said Thursday (7/9) that senior members of the ruling African
National Congress are working with the National Party to undermine
her, and that there is still oppression of women in South Africa due to cultural conditioning. She is attending the United Nations Conference on Women.

Winnie Mandela sot: "There are very senior people in the National
executive of the African National congress who are involved in
paul erasmus activities there are very senior government officials
they are ministers all.. cabinet ministers both in the anc and in
the nationalist party who are involved in these activities.
REPORTER: when you use a term like closed ranks it sounds like
there is a battle ahead. what is the battle?
Winnie: we are not free. You know that we are not totally
liberated in south africa. The women still have a long cause to
fight. We have emerged from a very brutal past. As i have repeated
time without number the african national congress is in
government but not in power and the injustices that are
perpetrated towards black women especially are still there. We are
oppresed by our culture..there were certain aspects of our lives
in our various diverse cultures which were retrogressive. we were
oppressed by our men because of those cultural differences also
and the south african woman - i don't know the actual rating but
i should imagine the abused women in south africa ranks high.
