Regarding 7:39, Portsmouth Square in San Francisco's Chinatown was the original location of Yerba Buena which was later renamed as San Francisco and it expanded from there as a city. In olden days, the shore of San Francisco Bay came up to Yerba Buena. During the Mexican-American War and the Bear Flag Revolt in California, on July 9, 1846, U.S. Navy Commander John Berrien Montgomery of the warship USS Portsmouth hoisted the American flag in Yerba Buena plaza. Yerba Buena plaza was renamed as Portsmouth Square for the USS Portsmouth. Mongtomery Street was named for the aforementioned Montgomery. Before Grant Avenue was named for Ulysses S. Grant, its name used to be Dupont Street for Samuel Francis Du Pont who was another U.S. Navy officer of the Mexican-American War who commanded the warship USS Cyane. Some older Cantonese residents still call Grant Avenue as "Dupont Gai" which was its name prior to the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. When I was a little girl, back in the 1950s, my parents and I used to spend a lot of Saturdays in China town, but back then the SFPD went down those allys in pairs. Most of even the residents stayed clear because there were Tong run gambiling parlors down most of them.

You are in San Francisco Chinatown. Most of the early settlers were from Canton or Hongkong .Cantonese ppl. Beijing is north China. The northern culture is bit different from the Cantonese one. Dim Sum and Won tun is a speciality dish in Hongkong or Cantonese culture.

I am so intensely homesick for SF right now! Thank you for this video. I used to go to Chinatown for veggies and dumplings after work before living in Asia, and then after Taiwan I went back to the heart of the grocery area (Kierney and Grant or something like that, just down from the library) intentionally on Saturday morning...when it was bursting with people. I actually missed the crowds and loudness, lol. And I will never forget accidentally using the Chinese hand gesture for six (looks like CA hang ten) and them understanding I wanted 6 of something. I was floating on air for hours. This is perfect timing too cause I am going back to my first Chinese 'place' , Taiwan, next week on vacation so feeling homesick for SF while visiting my hardest culture shock place for some reason feels so right to me. Keep up the videos, they are so fun to watch!

Oh, heck yea. Have you spent much time in the Avenues? That's the area of SF city on the Pacific side. There are tons of amazing Asian restaurants there, including hot pot, Korean bbq galore and yummy Burmese. Golden Gate Park is close enough that you could do a hike and eat some of this food as a reward, that's what I did often.

My favorite dim sum restaurant is Dol Ho on Pacific up from Stockton. It's a sit-down restaurant with a very local feel. But dim sum is a social event, so it's no fun to go alone. If alone, there are lots of takeaway dim sum places on Stockton like Good Mong Kok (which you visited). The people in the park are playing Chinese chess (lower level) and cards (upper level), and though some play for fun, there is some gambling and chess hustling going on! (Shhh!)

Groceries in Chinatown or other Asian markets tend to be dirt cheap - especially the produce. It may not be the best in the world, but it will get the job done, and the price is hard to beat. You can also find fruits and vegetables difficult to find in conventional supermarkets, like gai lan (Chinese broccoli) and fresh lychees.

No, using 2 VPNs isn't going to do anything for you except it may slow you down actually. Yes - ExpressVPN is one of the top VPNs in China and I think is considered "official" in the eyes of the Chinese government. I have zero concerns about it going down in 2018. Thanks so much!

If you come to San Francisco DO NOT! leave ANYTHING! in your vehicle. The window will be smashed and everything stolen. I mean don't leave ANYTHING! not a phone charger, bag, coat, shoes, Dead cat, NOTHING!! Every place in San Francisco, from "tourist places", hospitals, City hall, EVERYWHERE has this car break in problem and people have been hurt trying to catch these crooks.

Uhm no, racist much....in Alabama, we have white car thieves and its not reported..hell, one tried to climb through my unlocked pantry window...and this is in nice neighborhoods.......I assure you, if a black person so much as pinches someone, the whole race will be crucified by news, media, and whites, as usual. Car theft is just not important on the news clearly..if anything, media goes quiet on white crime

@@tohmaseguchi8505 - bullshit. I was shot in a shopping mall. As soon as the reporters found out I was white and the shooter was black, they dropped the story. I worked for the L.A. First thing you need to know kid, poverty brings crime, not race..but facts are pointless because your racist ass seems to have preconceived notions of blacks....its pretty obvious what your type is. everything imported from usa was really strong that goes for lifetime. having a look around the view you ve filmed look a well designed and strong. America must have got a long building history data.say the old house or building in new york has got a premium extra fee put on it that people have to pay for its premium old classic style which is contrary to my country due to a poor construction quality.
