Working on customers 1988 Harley-Davidson FLH the original carb wore out. We needed a replacement and we decided to take a risk and try an Amazon Marketplace copy of the original Kehin CVK.
Since this video was shot, the bike has had about 100KM (60miles) on it and is performing very well. So much so, we would do this carb again if needed.

I placed a $35 40mm cv knock off on a stock 99 road king. Finding metric screws for the air box backing plate was a 30 minute ride and another $6. Works fine, 2 years old now.

I've used these on pretty much all of my Shovelhead rebuilds, they work great!

The China knock-offs also make S&S E and Makuni, I put a super E on my shovel it cost $80 AU and I have to say I'm impressed. Harley has been using Taiwan, Mexico, and even Australia for parts for years so it's no good saying I only buy USA, SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO GO WITH YOUR WALLET, and sometimes you have no choice.

Thanks! the carb I used was from one of the sellers that is here today, gone tomorrow. What I would suggest is you do a search for them and go to a middle of the road priced carb. The cheap ones are unbelievably cheap, and the expensive ones are no better than the one I showed. Hope that helps.

Have one on my 02 FLHTC best $56 I spent new carb was less than the rebuild kit.

I bought the Chinese copy from Dennis kirk. I have 0 complaints and it's a very good quality knock off for 200 bucks. My bike runs mint w it on there. I wanted one that was a good clone and I found it for sure. I'm going to soak rebuild etc. The original carb. Then I'll have the knock off and a good oem.

Could have had your original built better than new by a remanufacture of the cv carb for about 50 more bucks

@@olebilly I still have the oem carb. I wanted it quick in order to ride. That carb is still perfectly fine as well. Still have 0 complaints and I'd Def buy another one. The best part is I have a spare now.

Don’t worry about a evo having a Chinese carb new Harleys are 80% foreign made

I just put a Chinese CV40 on a 2005 FLSTC for a guy it's the third one I've done. I use to have like ten or eleven Harley CV40 carburetors from where I put an S&S on a bike and the oweres didn't want the CV40 back. I sold them on Ebay a couple years ago except for one that was like new.

I agree there are better carbs out there. This isn’t about the “best” carb out there. It was about getting a customer going back down the road for less than the cost of the rebuild kit on his CVK. I have done lots of S&S carbs for customers. I still prefer the Mikuni HSR over the S&S but it is more involved to run perfectly.

@@rtrottier14 I'm with you I'm not a fan of the S&S it is over priced and once you rebuild them they start having issues like flooding. The Chinese CV40 seams well built much better than I expected I do prefer the original HD emulsion tube over the Chinese one I like the CV40 carburetors it's simple like the old Bendix was.

Nice and interesting video! 👍 ..so, did you keep the original chinese atomizer? (I guess it has four holes at the base instead of genuine CV with more holes, maybe 16)..my question is focused about fuel consumption and general delivery of torque and power, having one of those 4 holes atomizers for spare, I wish to make some tests on my Sportster and I've been wondering if it can work🤔 I assume mixture should be richer with that atomizer.. isn't it? Thanks in advance and cheers from Italy!

I am not an engineer so I can’t say definitively, but I do believe that the main jet is the deciding factor for mixture ratio. The atomization from the emulsion tube controls how fine the droplets are as the fuel enters the intake stream. The finer the droplets, the more complete the burn. The ratios would still be the same (A/F) but the finer atomization would create more power because of a more complete burn, acting as if it were richer. I have not heard back from this customer since he took delivery of the bike about a week after this video was published. I have seen him riding it allot so i believe he is happy with the results. Very informative. BTW I have a 1988 FLHTC. It didn't come from the factory with a CV carb. The CV carb wasn't introduced until 1989. But mine too had been updated long ago to a CV. Now that it needs rebuilding again I am considering a Chinese clone CV. It's cheaper to buy a new Chinese carb than rebuilding the Harley carb.

How successful do think a CV 40 (HD) would be on a DRZ400? Best of both worlds. CV plus accelerator pump.

I buy them from Ali and use them on all bikes i build. I only do the rejetting and rest leaving as it is. They run and function good :)

When I bought my iron head it had that carburetor on it the exact one. It is junk it kept popping back through the carb would not run . I went and bought a super E shorty Chinese knock off perfect carb runs right now.

I wonder what's better the CV carbs or the flat slide mikuni type. I just bought a Chinese clone mikuni HSR, it looks better than the real ones.🤷‍♂️

I noticed that the copy carb didn’t have an overflow for the bowl. Do all cv carbs have an overflow. I hear some don’t

It’s common for the knock off carbs to keep the machining to an absolute minimum. It’s not unusual to see the copy carbs without the drain/overflow machined in.
