Chinese Diesel Air Heaters - Part 11 - Fuel Delivery

This is a video on the fuel delivery of these Chinese Diesel Air Heaters.
Most of these heaters come with a 2mm bore, hard nylon, fuel hose plus short lengths of normal rubber fuel hose that are used as joiners. This is the genuine Eberspacher method of delivering fuel to these heaters, and has remained unchanged for some 80 years.
To lessen the chance of fuel leaks with all these joiners for the 2mm nylon fuel hose some people use straight lengths of 4mm bore fuel line, and now some of the suppliers of these Chinese Diesel Air Heaters, (Eberspacher copies), are now starting to supply their heaters with 4mm bore fuel hose rather than the standard hard nylon 2mm bore fuel hose.
Some of this larger 4mm fuel hose supplied with these heaters is a very soft vinyl type, and is just not suitable for these heaters, while some is a much better quality, harder type of fuel hose. If you are going to use the larger hose you should use the harder better quality hose.
Using the larger 4mm bore fuel hose is generally ok provided it is of the harder variety, the lengths are kept as short as possible, the fuel pump does not have a high suck fuel lift, and there are no big loops in the fuel hose delivery side where large bubbles can form.
With a good heater instillation, with no soot producing restrictions in the combustion air intake line or the exhaust system, these heaters will run very clean so there should be no real issues with using the larger bore hose, provided it is the better quality stiffer fuel hose, and not the very soft vinyl type of fuel hose.
The issues arise when you start to get carbon build up in the heater. The "soft" vinyl type fuel hose absorbs the pulses of the fuel pump and instead of the diesel squirting into the burn chamber and past any soot build up, the fuel pump pulses are absorbed by the soft vinyl fuel hose and the diesel "dribbles" into the burner chamber rather than squirting into the burner past the soot build up. If this happens your heater will not start or run well without a maintenance clean of the atomizing screen.
A real problem arises if you get large amounts of soot in the main burner atomizing screen which is near impossible to get at and clean by the average heater owner.
If you run oils in these heaters you will get rapid soot build up in the burner chamber.
It may be interesting to try running engine oil, vegetable oil, snake oil and gator oil, in these heaters, but all oils leave large quantities of soot when burned and you are setting yourself for some serious maintenance issues down the track.
You can not join into the vehicle fuel line if there is a fuel pump in or near the vehicle fuel tank. When your vehicle is switched off the little dosing pump can not suck the fuel past the vehicle's fuel pump, and when the vehicle is switched on the fuel pressure in the vehicle fuel line is too great for the little dosing pump.
Disclaimer. - As normal I only give suggestions, you must do your own research to find what is most suitable for you.

Wow. John clearly demonstrates such a comprehensive understanding of these systems both in theory and in practice, evidently from many years of experience and critical thought. Whilst there are many videos simply documenting an amateur install, these videos establish a knowledge of the core principals. It is very enabling, educational and such a great opportunity to learn more deeply about ubiquitous systems and reduce failure in these types of components.

Bruce Argyle Hi Bruce, there are a number of online sellers. Search hard nylon fuel hose for Eberspacher diesel heater. I don't like to list suppliers in the description as sellers come and go. The last supplier I bought hose from is no longer there. I just did a quick search to get you started. See below. www.ebay.com.au/itm/Diesel-Heater-Nylon-Fuel-Line-OD5mm-ID1-5mm-7m-/333785075903?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292 Cheers. JMcK

@@johnmck1147 Thanks John, didn’t seem to find a lot will retry. So what is the ideal inside and outside diameters.
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 3 года назад
Bruce Argyle Hi Bruce, The ID is not so critical, 1.5 mm to 3 mm ok. Probably 2 mm ID would be ideal. It is “hard” part that matters. The pump puts out pulses (squirts) of fuel, and a soft fuel hose on the delivery side of the pump absorbs these pulses making the fuel delivery to the heater less efficient. The outer diameter does not really matter, but thicker (stiffer) is preferable to thinner. Cheers. JMcK

I have tried it both ways and the supplied soft large bore fuel line did work, however the small hard line as described by John did work MUCH better! It's little nuggets of knowledge like this that should make John's entire series on these heaters mandatory for anyone purchasing one of these heaters. You owe it to yourself to watch this incredibly well researched series. Tons of knowledge in each episode. Thank you John for all of the hard work that these videos must have entailed!
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 3 года назад
Hi 74 Willy, First thanks for your kind comments. Yes, the soft large bore fuel hose will work (for a while) If the length from pump to heater is short it will work for longer. The issue is this is not like a normal internal combustion motor with a carburettor, more like a fuel injected motor where the fuel is injected into the engine. In this case into a glow plug atomisation screen to start the heater and then into a big burner atomisation screen to run the heater. (See how far you would get using soft fuel hose to car engine injectors) The diesel must be squirted into these screens for atomisation. Soft fuel hose absorbs the fuel pulses, which causes lack of atomisation, which then causes carbon formation, which causes restriction to fuel passage, which causes more carbon, which causes more restrictions, causing more carbon etc. If the fuel delivery is short and you were only supplied with cheap transparent plastic fuel hose and can't source hard nylon fuel hose, at the very least buy some quality automotive fuel hose. Cheers. JMcK

Thank you John !! I am so very happy with your videos, learned so much! One hint for users who are thinking (like me) about installing the so called "silent pump" by james browning-smith: This pump is a better "sucker" than the standard issue noisy model, so that the pump should be mounted near the heater - the setup is: fuel tank - filter - longer part of the fuel line - pump - short fuel line - diesel heater.

For Canadians I found certified fuel rated hose 3/32" (2.38mm) ID x 3/16"OD, 100psi (690kPl, 9bar)) at Home Debit, . It's in the plumbing department with the white nylon hose. It's easier to bend then the nylon hose and wont kink, but the material is far less compressible than the cheap soft hose that come with most diesel heaters. Made by Canada Tubing Products, part # SUFD10, it was less than $10 for 10' (3m). I tried heating the line to see if it would slip on, it won't, so you will still have to get attach the same way as in John's excellent videos

We are fortunate to have someone as talented as you providing this priceless information on the intricate details of what looks like a purely simple system. I can’t imagine the amount of time you must have spent to produce these videos 🤔 Certainly the data shipped with these units is inadequate, hard to interpret at best and flat dangerous at worst. As a retired Cat diesel mechanic, I thought I knew all I needed to know for such a simple device, and in fact, I had no issues with my shop workspace installation, but am thinking of your attention to detail on butting the small id rigid tubing within the soft hose connections to prevent an accumulator effect, cavitation etc. Although I was careful, I fell short of verifying all those points and think I will go over my fuel delivery system to make sure it is in optimum shape. Even thinking of doing a micro and I do mean “micro” bevel at the hard line cuts. As I said, my machine is performing very well, but with such tiny flow rates everything must be very precise for a clean efficient trouble free burn. I have my unit mounted high in my shop and the fuel tank is low as is the filter and pump, but I’m asking the dosing pump to lift the fuel straight up seven feet or a little over two meters, and while it’s working fine now ; I should probably change that for the long haul. Thanks so much for the great information! “💡”Have you ever thought of contracting with these Chinese manufacturers to write a proper discernible installation/troubleshooting manual? Cheers 🍻👍
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 5 лет назад
Hi Siskyiou, thank you for the feedback. I think bevels are not necessary, but a 2 m push for the pump is right on the limit. If your heater is working well with no smoking I would leave it be. I would love feedback on how the pump performs at that hight. J

@johnmck1147 5 лет назад
Hi Mr Si. Reading this again, I tend to think your proactive thoughts may prevent issues with your heater in the future particularly as you are asking a lot of the little dosing pump. Re the manuals, the Chinese have copied much of the genuine Eberspacher Manual, from German to Chinese and then appear to translate from Chinese to English. The English version of the Eberspacher D4 manual is well worth reading.
@siskiyouwoodsman4279

Hi John McK 47, I’ve verified the the plastic fuel line is butted at the tank, filter, pump and the input at the main unit but did not take the time to micro bevel the tubing as the way I cut it didn’t smash the tubing. I was however inaccurate in my fuel lift estimation as it is only 5.5’ a bit under 2 meters and the pump is gravity fed at fuel tank levels above 1/3. I’ve got 8 hours of run time and everything is looking good. Thanks for the information on the OEM manual, I will be looking into that🤓 Oh, and I sprung for the “8 kw unit” because of the type of space I’m heating and of coarse now know that it’s really a 5 kw. For the extra $40 dollars I got a fancy fake carbon fiber paint job ha ha🙃 Live and learn, but I’m happy with its performance just the same.

All that happened was very little heat output lots of white smoke and diesel dripping from the exhaust muffler and E10 error message. After priming at least 10 times and trying again I watched your very informative video and have ordered the proper hard small bore nylon hose. Hopefully this will fix my issue. John, love your work and watched EVERY video to gather up your wealth of knowledge on the subject. Of course, this was not out of curiosity because I have a 2kW heater that has been troublesome in spite of your best efforts to make very installation a success. In my particular case I gathered from your comments about the dosing pump being a poor sucker and better at blowing. Extrapolating this thought I decided placing the fuel tank above the pump would allow gravity to feed the pump and it wouldn’t need to work so hard. Clearly this was wrong and the cavitation bubbles were excessive and probably the fuel dosing likewise because all that was coming from the exhaust was thick smoke and the heater refused to fire (burn). After a repeat viewing of your video I noted the fuel should gradually rise up to the pump and then on to the heater unit which I thought to be a guideline rather than a rock solid requirement. To correct my install I put a long feed line at the base of the tank then running the feed line above the height of the tank in a loop and then allowing the fuel line to run back down by siphon effect into the dosing pump. Who would have thought that the gravitational effect on the fuel delivery would cause the heater to fail so catastrophically. Obviously a trap for young (70) players who did not pay sufficient attention to your diagram showing the fuel line in an upward direction. Heater now running, no smoke, perfecto! Thank you so much for your painstaking effort. Appreciated more that you would realise. Cheers and best wishes.

@@johnmck1147 Hi again John, following my diesel fuel delivery correction, my diesel heater fails to fire when initially turned on and goes through the glow plug / pump dosing sequence, lots of smoke from the exhaust, 2 times before the E-10 error code shows on the LCD display. However, when I press the ON button immediately thereafter the heater starts to fire with a heavy breathing sound followed by simply working with no exhaust smoke CO is negligible and it goes and goes and goes. I’m nervous about the reliability of this heater and my gut tells me to replace it now rather than need to rely on the heater in the field. I don’t understand why the heater fails to ignite from the glow plug from the getgo. The amp meter draws about 8.5 during the glow plug sequence. IMO the burn chamber might be the weak link. Any suggestions / comments? My leaning is towards Yang Yang deals / au focus 2kW. I remember your comments the 5kW is a better option but my motorhome install has limited space and only the size of 2kW will fit. Sorry to burden you with my problem, but you might have the simple answer which has blindsided me thus far, Cheers Mike

I don't have one of these pumps, so this is just speculation, but I would think that the thump you hear is the piston hitting the pump body at the end of its delivery stroke. I would suggest putting a small fuel jet from a carburettor or similar in the outlet pipe to slow down the flow of fuel and so slow down the piston. This will reduce the thump. The jet will have to be big enough to allow sufficient fuel through and small enough to offer some restriction. It will need some experimentation.

i am commenting as i watch the video. so your talking about the soft fuel line will pulse to a larger size as the pump pulses. so i understand that. i am a dragracer and build my own engines. i always used very high pressure fuel line. up to 300 psi. i know thoughs pumps don't do that but i have seen those plastic filters actually pulsate with each pulse of a fuel pump. do you think that plastic filter would do the same thing with that pump? if it did it would lower the pressure of the injection into the chamber.

Can the fuel tank be above the dosing pump or can a fuel pump supply fuel without flooding the dosing pump?
@antman5474
@antman5474 4 года назад
Thanks for taking the trouble to explain this, it makes a lot of sense. So I'll install my fuel pump slightly below the heater at an 45 degree angle and connect it up with a 2mm bore hard nylon pipe, question is, would I then be able to mount the fuel tank above the heater? It's just that since I plan on mounting the heater to the vehicle floor I'm not left with anywhere else to put it. I assume mounting it above the pump would improve fuel flow to the pump inlet and lighten the pumps workload. Is this feasible?
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 4 года назад
Yes Mr AM. You can mount the tank above the heater up to about 1 m without getting excessive head pressure issues, however it is good practice to install a small fuel shut off valve in the fuel line close to the tank and before the filter and pump. This prevents the diesel draining out past lose or worn pump valves when not in use. JMcK

The weight of fuel in the pipe seems irrelevant to me Because the pump is not lifting it all Its still only lifting the same quantity the same height, irrespective of how much is in the pipe or tank.

Hi Ian, sadly, that is the nature of this type of pump. The pulse operation makes a ticking noise. They make more noise if they have an air bubble, so try tilting the pump more vertical to see if there is a lower "tick" You could also see if better isolation makes less noise by removing the pump from the wall and suspending in air with string. If there is a big noise improvement, remount the pump with better isolation. Regards, JMcK

Great video John, thanks for sharing. Could you tell me, would 3mm hose work?
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 Год назад
Hi E, if you are referring to 3 mm id hard nylon fuel line the answer is YES. I must constantly state that “any” fuel line will work on these heaters……..for a while. However if you use soft fuel hose on the delivery side of the fuel pump, the pump pulse force is absorbed by the fuel hose and you will not get proper forced atomisation of the fuel through the atomisation screens in the burner, leading to poor fuel burn, which leads to carbon deposits forming on the screens, and eventually no lighting of the burner. This is why you should only use proper “hard” fuel line on the delivery side of the pump with these heaters. JMcK

Good video but I have to take issue with one thing. When you are saying that the pump finds it easier to draw up the fuel from a small diameter tube compared to a large one due to the weight of the fuel in it, that is simply not true. You fail to take into account the effect of air pressure acting on the open end of the fuel tube. The air pressure acts over a larger area for the larger diameter fuel tube and basically cancels out any effect the different tube diameters have. That's why pump manufacturers only quote the height a pump can lift from, they never quote tube sizes because its irrelevent. What makes the diesel go up that tube is the air pressure acting on the end of it. If you want further proof, look at the Torricelli mercury column barometer - the diameter of its column has no effect.

To clarify - it is acceptable to run a rubber fuel line from tank to pump as long as you only use the rigid line from the pump to the heater? One more question - I need to make a pretty tight bend (basically a 180* reversal from the tank output which is heading south and the line to the heater has to run to the north) is it best to run that tight bend before the pump with soft hose or after the pump with the rigid tubing as long as there is no kinks? Thanks for the excellent videos and deep dive into these heaters!
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 4 года назад
Hi Jeremy, Yes, you can use normal soft fuel hose from tank to pump, but should only use hard, narrow bore, nylon from pump to heater. Without seeing your set up, I can only suggest, but I would prefer tight bends in the suction side of the pump rather than the delivery side. If you go too tight and kink the hard nylon you have made issues for yourself. Cheers. JMcK

Hi John I installed the heater about a year ago after watching your videos which were invaluable in setting it up and the heater worked great throughout last season. I put in the algae retarder fluid and when I fired it up this year it worked for a while and then shut down upon inspection I found a surprising amount of stuff in both the tank and filter and the pump. I remove them and cleaned them put in fresh diesel and it pumps but doesn’t fire up could it be the jet is clogged as well and if so is there a process for cleaning it. Thank you for your very thorough help Rob
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 3 года назад
Hi Rob, first thanks for the feedback, now to your issues. I personally do not like algae additives, believing it is better to drain off any water (needed for algae growth) than to use additive. I also believe it is better at season end to run the heater diesel through your truck, or give it away. If you had so much crud in your system it is likely you have a blockage. First check the pump is actually pumping diesel. Take the hose off the pump outlet and check diesel squirts out. The pump can be working but no diesel comes out. Next you will need to remove the ignition screen around the glow plug. If that is blocked the heater will not start. You also need to make sure the little air hole at the burner screen is clear or the heater will not start. I have a video on this. Now check that the glow plug is working and getting hot. If the heater still does not start, there is a possibility that the main burner screens are blocked. If this is the case things are more difficult. The burner must come out and you can try soaking the burner in kerosene, draining out the kero, and then very carefully try to burn out any carbon and rubbish with a blow torch. If you are not comfortable of using a blow torch or know someone who is, it may be better to buy a new burner. Available on eBay. I would be interested to know how you go. Good luck. JMcK

John Very informative thankyou. I have fitted a heater in my vw t5 van. Had problem with air in pipe and filter. The pick up is from main diesel tank but maybe the 2mm pipe was not butted up properly which causes bubbles in filter and pipe. The pump is under the floor nearer the heater maybe I should we-locate it nearer the tank. The route for the pipe is pretty level with a slight gradient upwards towards the pump which is about 15 deg pointing upwards.Any suggestions would be appreciated. You certainly know your way around these heaters ! Regards Rob.
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 5 лет назад
Hi Rob, I probably need a little more info. 1. First make sure all your connections are correct and tight and you are not sucking in any air. 2. These pumps are far better at pushing diesel rather than sucking diesel so the pump and diesel filter should be as close to the fuel tank as possible. 3. The pump itself creates small cavitation bubbles so it must be mounted to face upwards to allow those bubbles to escape. 4.It is not unusual to get bubbles in the fuel filter if it is on its side and was not fully purged of air on initial start up. Generally this does not cause any issues with the operation of the heater. Just make sure there are no air leaks causing a bigger bubble. 5. With the pump close to the fuel tank, all fuel line after the pump is under pressure so leaks are easily seen as diesel leaks out. Air leaks inwards before the pump are hard to find. 6. If the heater is working properly, I would not be too concerned about a few bubbles in the fuel filter, provided they do not increase in volume. Use the heater as is. Cheers, JMcK

Thanks for your outstanding videos about that topic! I own a 3 Kw diesel heater and it produces heat but is smoking like hell, any advice what the cause is? Cheers!
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 4 года назад
Hi aD Thanks for the positive feedback. It could be a number of reasons. If always smoking from new, you most likely have install issues with excessive restrictions in the combustion air inlet, or the exhaust causing poor fuel/air mixture ratios. If it used to burn clean originally but now smokes after a lot of use you may have excessive carbon build up which will require removal. Suggest you try initially running a 90/10 kerro/diesel mix through the heater for an hour or so to see if an improvement. Kerro helps burn off carbon. If that does not help and carbon is the problem it will require a strip down and manual clean. Another cause of smoke can be poor fuel delivery caused by a partial blocked fuel filter, kinks in the fuel line, not using narrow bore hard nylon on delivery side of the pump. Soft fuel hose on the delivery side of the pump absorbs the pulse pressure and you do not get full atomisation of the fuel in the burner screen. Good luck. JMcK

Hi Andrew, Suggest you buy from a supplier with an in country warehouse who accepts returns. There are just so many suppliers and they come and go in short order, that I can not recommend one. It is very unlikely you will get a dud heater though. The all in one heater is a good concept, but needs improvement to be a turn key heater. Sideways mounting with glow plug on top is ok. With glow plug down raw fuel tends to flood glow plug and atomisation screen preventing a start. Cheers. JMcK

Warm greetings John from Western Massachusetts, USA. A question: I'm planning on installing one of these heaters in my 12x16 foot shed. I'm figuring on having the heater mounted high on wall near the ceiling with the output from the heater divided into two lines. The fuel tank would be mounted 2 or 3 feet up from the floor. Am I correct in assuming that, if I put the pump close to the tank and use the hard nylon line, that I wont have issues with the more than one meter of climb the fuel will have to travel to reach the burner? Some people like to binge watch old TV shows; I'm binge watching your series on these heaters! Thanks in advance for your time and for producing these excellent videos.
@johnmck1147
@johnmck1147 3 года назад
Hi Kerry, First thanks for the positive feedback. Do you have popcorn 🍿 for your “binge”watching? Now being serious. Why mount the heater up so high? Hot air rises, and you will have to force it back down. It is better to have the fuel pump as close to the fuel tank as possible. A 1 metre lift is ok, but less is better. Suggest you consider using normal fuel hose from tank to shut off valve to fuel filter to fuel pump on the intake side to lessen the chance of fuel leaks from multiple hose joins using hard nylon on input side. In your set up simple is probably more beneficial than more efficient. On the delivery side of pump you should only use narrow bore hard nylon fuel hose. Suggest you consider using a fuel tap close to the fuel tank in your install, and turn it off when not in use. This will help prevent the fuel draining down out of the fuel line. But it should be ok without it as the head height is only a couple of feet. If it makes an easier install, you can mount the heater sideways on the shed wall, provided it is the side with the glow plug on top, and run the exhaust straight out the shed wall. Good luck. JMcK

Hi John, thanks for the reply and excellent tips. The reason for the height is mainly due to space management; having moved to a new house I've greatly downsized my work space. Around the perimeter of the shed I'll have cabinets and a bunch of power tools; wall space is at a premium so I figure if its higher its not taking much space I could use for something else. I'm still in the planning phase; so it might end up lower, maybe in a cabinet. Thanks again!

Hi MB, The heaters work fine with the fuel tank above the pump, but if the tank is also above the heater you should install a shutoff valve in the fuel line before the pump, and turn this off when heater not in use. Hi Devin, There is no issue using normal fuel hose on the suction side of the pump to reduce leaks. That is from tank to fuel tap (if fitted) to filter, to pump. But on the delivery side you should only use narrow bore hard nylon. Your issue is caused by the supplier giving you the wrong size black fuel hose joiners. If your nylon hose is 4mm OD, using 4 mm ID black fuel hose as a joiner is too lose and will not work. You need to complain to your supplier, ask for a discount, and then go to an auto store and buy some narrower bore fuel hose to use as a joiner. You soften the black fuel hose in hot water to soften it so you can force the hard nylon into the black hose joiner. I talk more about this in the motorhome. videos. Suggest you view those. Hi Jack, if you have a Chinese copy heater, they mostly use the same dosing pump putting out .02 ml per stroke. There are many online sellers. Below is just one to get you started. Make sure you get the voltage right. www.ebay.com.au/itm/12V-Car-Air-Diesel-Parking-Oil-Fuel-Pump-For-2-5KW-Webasto-Eberspacher-Heater-AU/313220504074?hash=item48ed659a0a:g:RWkAAOSw9iNfYY0t It is very rare to have an issue with the dosing pump if it was not used for initial prime where it operated for many strokes without lubrication. Pumps with internal filters have issues with the little filter, but most Chinese heaters come with a seperate filter. JMcK

Woah, who would have thought bigger line wasn't better! Thanks John!

John, mine works great when running. However, if I shut it down then restart it, the exhaust always ends up flooded with diesel (verified by disconnecting exhaust pipe) and it fails to start. (E-8 code) I presume that this is because the pump is allowing fuel through in a syphoning effect which overwhelms the ignition/combustion chamber causing it not to light. The only solution I can think of is to fit a tap on the line so I can shut the heater down purely through fuel starvation. Yes it'll throw an error of course but should allow it to start correctly after the power is disconnected as it would be priming from scratch. Thoughts?

Thanks John. Is there a maximum length of fuel line you’d recommend? My fuel container will be housed in the front of the van and the heater in the back making the fuel line around 4 meters. Would this be acceptable?

Hi John, Have you seen the motorhome install video? Your instal should have no issues if you put the pump close to the fuel tank and use narrow bore hard nylon fuel hose on the delivery side to the heater. Cheers. JMcK

Hi John McK 47 I have enjoyed all 11 parts of "Diesel Air Heaters". Simply the best instructive videos ever. I have ordered 2 5kw heaters and they will be delivered in a month or so. One for the boat and one for my workshop. I have 2 questions: In the boat it is almost impossible to get the exhaust below the heater. I have to consider the waterline and raise the outlet approximately 400mm over the heater. What do you think of this? In the workshop I have 240V AC at hand and would like to buy a power supply 240VAC/12VDC. 20A. Power supply's are normally switch mode operated. Will that be a problem? or do I have to use normal 12V DC from a car battery with appropriate charger? Eventually this could be a subject for video no 12:-) Best regards from Denmark.

Hi Bjarne, first thanks for the positive feedback. Now to your questions. 1. You have three issues with a marine instillation. a. Because most installs are below the waterline the exhaust has to loop up above the waterline, so this requires a condensate drain at the lowest spot in the exhaust, and this is generally at the heater exhaust outlet. However because it is in a boat you just can't drill a drain hole as you will allow exhaust gas into your boat. You can buy a marine heater drain from Eberspacher (expensive) or check the link below, or make one yourself, it is quite easy to do if you have a good workshop or mate with one. Basically it is a 90 degree pipe bend with a narrow bore pipe drain with three small loops in the narrow bore pipe. The loops provide a water trap to stop exhaust gas getting into your boat. In April I am going back to our boat in the Med for 3 months and I intend to do a marine video and publish it on my return in early July. But this is of no help to you just now. Eberspacher publish a marine install guide which may be of some help. However they do not go into actual detail as they insist all their installs are done professionally. b. You need to buy a marine exhaust muffler or make one yourself. The mufflers supplied with the Chinese diesel heaters leak exhaust through their spot weld construction and water drain hole. You must also do a very good lagging job on the exhaust after you have verified there are no gas leaks., and you must use a muffler sealing compound to remove any chance of exhaust gas leaks. c. You need a marine insulated exhaust hull outlet. These you can buy off eBay, and when I track back where I bought mine I will leave a link here. I would normally make mine out of 316 ss as I have a TIG welder at home, but I bought one late last year for around $18 US. At that price it was not worth making and polishing. But at this stage I can't find details of the seller for you. 2. Re the power supply, I have not done enough testing here to give you a proper answer., and it could be a subject for another video when I return home in July. What I do know is Switch mode power supplies have a lot of ripple in the supplied DC current. I am also aware of increased ECU failures in these diesel air heaters when installed in yachts or canal boats, when compared to land installs. At this stage there is suspicion among professional industry repair people that the increase in failures in the marine field is caused by ripples and spikes coming from alternators with boost type regulators and cheaper battery chargers, particularly those with long cable runs and thin cables that cause increased ripple. It is excessive ripple and voltage spikes in the DC battery voltage that destroys the capacitors in the ECU. I could not find the eBay supplier where I bought my boat stuff, but here is just one link to get you started on your searching. This site has the exhaust through hull fittings, marine mufflers, lagging, and exhaust drains. www.ebay.com.au/str/dieselheaters4ultd It is not a simple answer for you, but I hope it is a start. JMcK

@@johnmck1147 Thank you very much, it helps me a lot. I wonder about my old (1989)heater (Mikuni 3o) which didn't work. Mounted in my boat which I purchased last october. No water trap, mufler with tiny holes, and ordinary non isolated outlet!! The muffler looks OK and I will close the small holes and test for other leaks. The exhaust outlet I will have to buy. The 90 degree pipe bend I'll make myself. The only information I need is the exhaust outlet diameter on the heater?? I guess its the same on all 5kw models, so if you agree, please measure for me. Thank you very much.

Hi Bjarne, they vary slightly between different castings, but the exhaust outlets are around 24 mm diameter.
