Fun Fact: When watching Chinese drama that take place in ancient China, ever notice that when ever a general or visitor reports to the emperor, they have to flick their hands in a downward fashion before bowing? This was to show that they did not carry and concealed weapons (knifes, swords, darts, etc.) up their sleeves.

The information in this video is nessasary and needed for Hollywood filmmakers who get every outfit wrong while making Chinese/Asian theme films. Last I checked Qipaos and Kimono's did not exist during the Qin Dynasty era.

True, in a roundabout way. It's not that Hollywood designers can't use wikipedia (the Chinese diaspora community is very very good about making wikipedia articles you can find out pretty much anything about historical China on there despite modern mainland China pretending it doesn't exist). What is true is that they don't care about accurate representation: their overriding concern is that the actresses look sexy. They also correctly assume that the people who matter, their target audience and the critics, won't know any better. You'll note they tend to be more accurate with the menswear, ya know... because girls don't buy movie tickets in the minds of Hollywood execs.

Samurai Sakura"I'm not even Chinese". Yes you're not Chinese, the allure of exotic clothing like the Cheongsam and Qipao makes it look fashionable and attractive. You wear them since in the Western world, we are starting to see traditional Asian clothing as more fashionable. Just because you wear them, doesn't mean the everyday Chinese wear them, and I must say, I've never really seen any Chinese people wear them. They probably do for formal occasions but even then, most probably go for Western style clothing. Also Yukata are only worn in the summer due to its light material. Kimono are worn on special occasions like they said, primarily weddings and other formal gatherings. Hope you learn something new today
@wubaduckie
@wubaduckie 10 лет назад
Samurai Sakura The Qipao/Cheongsam are pretty but it's not something most Chinese people are attached to like the Japanese with their kimono and yukata and the Korean with the hanbok. I'm not sure how to explain it... the yukata and kimono and the hanbok are traditional cultural images that the young still enjoy and they seem to have more "life" (... I guess I mean more appreciation in general). Kimono, yukata and hanbok remain quite traditional but there are ongoing trends that keep it fashionable. You have fashion shows for those traditional clothes (mostly the kimono and hanbok, but Japanese street fashion brands also release their versions of yukata). Ok, not to say that the Qipao isn't fashionable but it's bigger of an icon in the Western world and I think because it's relatively new compared to the kimono and the hanbok, it just doesn't have the same appeal. Also... not everyone can pull off the Qipao. There is the hanfu movement that aims to bring it back but I'm not sure how popular it is. There's no "modern relevance" to the hanfu (thanks Wiki... I think that sums up what I was trying to say). It has a lot of history but it's been out of fashion for so long... it just seems like people wear it for the nostalgia because the tradition of wearing the clothes was lost when they banned it. I gotta say that I love the Tang dynasty dresses very much though - they look so airy.
@jenny7_hi
@jenny7_hi 10 лет назад
Samurai Sakura Also, technically, the qipao isn't purely Chinese. Or I should say, it's not purely Han. It was the clothing style of the Manchurians in the Qing Dynasty when they took over China, and since it was the last dynasty, the hanfu from previous dynasties basically just disappeared. But I think it would be awesome if wearing hanfu in normal life became relatively normal... like how some older Indians wear saris outside all the time. It wouldn't be the most practical though, since there's so many layers in hanfu, but it would certainly be pretty awesome :D

Because East Turkestan is very rich in all kinds of natural resources, naturally very diverse and vast. Chinese wanted to totally exterminate Uyghur Nation and Chinese wanted to take over Eastern Turkestan from Uyghur Nation. Uyghurs DO NOT LIVE IN CHINA in East Asia. Uyghurs live in own Natural Territory Eastern Turkestan in Central Asia. Eastern Turkestan of Uyghur Nation is not "Xinjiang" of China. Uyghur Nation is not "Ethnic minority of China ". Size of Eastern Turkestan is bigger than the combination of Europe's biggest Four Countries - Germany, France, Britain and Italy. East Turkestan is the world's biggest producer of rare earth materials, uranium, jade, gold, silver, cotton, tomatoes, garlic, silk, cashmere, green, raisins, Grapes, wool, leather, meat, marble, etc. East Turkestan is one of the world's biggest producer of coal, salt, petrol, natural gas, mika, and many others. Uyghur Nation was the Riches Nation in the world before China's illegal invasion into Eastern Turkestan on 20 October 1949. Jacky Phantom uh... you might want to do more research then. The kimono and hanbok sharing similarities with the Hanfu isn’t just a “coincidence”, the Japanese and Korean took major inspiration from it. It’s just like how the Japanese use Kanji, and how Japanese culture holds so much in common with Chinese culture. Korea used to use chinese characters on a daily basis as well, now that they have their own alphabet they only use chinese characters for higher levels of education. East Asia in general was extremely influenced by China because it was the oldest and most advanced civilization at the time, all the way up until Manchuria screwed it over. You can’t just say “I’m pretty sure the Japanese came up with it themselves” and ignore history. The Japanese made their own version of the Hanfu and later refined it into the Kimono. Even the Maiko make up style in japan is inspired by the make up styles used in Peking Opera. The Japanese sent scholars over to China to learn the language and culture and they brought it back to japan with them, I can guarantee you any similarity you see between Chinese and Japanese culture is no coincidence.

Nonetheless, the Chinese Tang Dynasty Hanfu (唐朝漢服) had influenced the Japanese Kimono and the Chinese Ming Dynasty Hanfu (明朝漢服) had also influenced the Korean Hanbok.

Ricecake I'm not Chinese and have worn hanfu. I have been laughed at by Chinese people, but I'm still standing :P (I shrugged it off at the time, but I should have laughed back at them and asked why it's funny that I wear "their" clothes while they've been wearing "my" clothes their whole lives... what good is culture if other people don't care about it and want to emulate it or embody it?)

Dont worry, im chinese myself and im also embarassed to wear those clothes since some of them are too shot for me lol. But im sort of into the japanese fashion and western fashion so i get embarassed of people calling me a Wapanese or a Weaboo i just really love the style. Espicially the harajuku fashion, so dont wprry even chinese get embarassed of wearing our own clothes and other cultures too.

Yeah, Tang fashion was fabulous. Btw, that Tang bun fashion hairstyle got to Japan as well, but later Japanese court women had a "fashion rebellion" against imported styles, and started growing their hair straight and really long. That's why you can see women in old Japanese paintings with really long black hair. Pretty interesting how all these things are connected.

Tang dynasty was the most open of Chinese dynasties. Therefore it makes sense its fashions look better - they are more Western..er..global. Tang dynasty was also very anti-death penalty btw. Much better than modern China. Tang dynasty used the same penalty modern China uses against "misbehaving" Westerners - exile. Most Westerners when they think of Chinese culture think of Tang (poetry) and Ming (vases).

Yeah, tragedy is now happening in China like some of the old times because of their curent government and I believe just like the old times in China, I believe that China once again will be prosperous, beautiful and great nation again in the far future just like some of the old dynasties. Cycle is happening and the history repeats itself.

I really love the old Chinese fashion trend. Whenever I would watch some Chinese soap opera, I would always admire the women's beautiful clothing since I was little. It's beautifully designed and put together, colorful but not tacky. I've always wanted to wear one :( I've worn qipao, but it's too tight and uncomfortable... I don't really like it.
