The 5:58 手势 comes from American Sign Language! It is a combination of the letters "I", "L", and "Y" :)

Thank you - this was very interesting. As someone has already mentioned, the victory sign✌️with your palm facing the other person is not rude in the UK (just means victory or peace), but the other way round (with palm facing yourself) is. This gesture dates back to the hundred year war with France. The British soldiers were very good archers and the French found it more practical when they caught them just to cut off the fingers they used to pull the bow string and let them go rather than keep them as prisoners (which would have meant feeding them etc). This gesture off sticking up the first two fingers therefore became a way of mocking the French soldiers as a way of saying “look I still have my bow fingers, I can fire at you”. It’s still used as an insulting gesture these days but means more F-off.

For: "come to me!" in Germany the right hand is held 'inside upwards' and index finger is repeatedly moved from straight to in-bowing. So it points towards the person to come and then towards one self, the person to come to. Funny thing is, that when You want a person not to come to You but to another place or person, than the hand faces downwards and the index finger remains straight, moving from start person/place to destination person/place.

The OK sign in Brazil has a bad meaning. Here it means "as*", which can be used to tell someone off and the alikes. But, honestly, I think that with the contact with other cultures, it's slowly starting to change in people's minds, hehe. Thank you for the awesome class!

Same gesture as for 6 or "call" put in front of your mouth or shaken like "you're awesome" can mean "to smoke pot/weed" )) 2:14 - AFAIK in Japan it is used to note sensitive/lover associated context (talking about secret love affairs, secret dating etc). In Russia pointing with index finger is considered to be a bad manner, but you can always point out with two or more/palm. Sometimes teachers and professors (older generations) use middle finger to point at something (connected with holding a chalk between index and thumb at the same moment). Also using middle finger to fix slipping off your nose glasses used to be casual before spreading the "f*ck" meaning of the middle finger. About "victory" gesture - in most countries it is ok, but I recall about two had issues with it. Also if "victory" is shown with the back of the hand forvard and not the palm (like on video) it means sexual related stuff and is considered rude, unless you're trying to seduce some girl in a rude manner (some like it apparently)... Also aslo if you put "victory" behind someone's head while making a pic of/with this person it can be considered rude in the context that this person got cheated on and now has "horns" (because being cheated on makes you grow horns, apparently). 3:38 - besides just "smoking" it also can mean "do you have smokes?" if you are asking someone to lend you one. 4:18 - in Russia and (probably) non-asian countries most ppl wont probably understand this gesture or will think of it as "go away". Now then if you do the same move but with your palm looking up and the hand not being so high (on the chest/belly level) - this will be understandable. 5:38 - means "money" in Russia and some other countries. 5:58 - is cursing gesture in some countries of Africa. It also can mean "cool" "rock" (as "you rock/this rocks"). 6:06 - more like running. "Driving" is usually more rounded and smooth. 6:15 - either "time is running out/it is time to..." or "what time is it?" (last meaning works at least in Russia)

Excellent video! Just to answer your questions. In England the victory sign, with the back of the hand pointed aways from your body has the a similar meaning to showing the middle finger. The ok sign with palm up with your fingers pointed towards another does have an offensive meaning. If you shake yourhand from left to right whilst doing this gesture, its meaning is more clear.

About those unpleasant gestures, in the United Kingdom... 🇬🇧 2:50 This gesture is *not* unpleasant and is also used when taking pictures. It means "peace". But, *if you do it with your palm facing inwards* then it's considered vulgar. 3:50 This is used the same in the UK as in China; we also use it if we're happy with a meal. Historically it has had bad connotations but in the modern day it's harmless. 5:36 Dont worry, this is the last one 😅♥️ This is also used here but for different reasons. We use it if you really hope for something, for example if you really hope it doesn't rain. 谢谢你,我爱说汉语 ♥️🇨🇳🇬🇧

🤞is slightly different (it's with the index and middle finger); also worth noting that in the UK 666 is the number of the beast 😈

The "OK" sign is rude in Brazil. (Also the "thumbs up" in some countries in the Middle East. ) The two finger sign is fine as Deng Deng gives it with palm forwards, it's only rude (in Britain at least) the other way around (although Winston Churchill often used the V for Victory sign that way round too). Excellent video by the way, thanks for all your hard work making these.

Italian here. At 5:58 you are doing a very offensive gesture for all Italian people! It basically means that you are saying to the other person that their partner is cheating on them! we usually do that without our thumb sticking out and showing the back of the hand, but some Italians could find it offensive either way. We also can do that gesture to drive away bad luck. We are strange folks...great video!

Do Chinese poeple actually point their noses when referring to themselves? What I mean is this: if a Chinese person is introducing themselves to a stranger, do they do so while pointing their noses? I read about this after a quick search, so I'd apprecciate if someone could confirm that.

五只海马?真的吗?Your "come here" gesture is different. I know the "Victory" gesture. In UK/US, the obscene gesture is the same 2 fingers, but has the hand facing the other direction (palm towards you). (手掌面向你,而不是手掌朝外.)

The ,,OK" and the ,,V" sign, as well as the last hand sign for 'ai' (love), are considered Satanic in Christianity, especially Orthodox Christianity. You'll never see me making those signs 😅😂. The V ✌️ represents the horns 👿 of the devil, the OK 👌 stands for 666 (the number of the devil), and the 'ai' 🤟 sign represents horns as well. This sign 🤟🤘 is often used by popular rock bands to mean ,,rock n roll" as well, but it is said that they also use it to declare their allegiance to the devil (certain bands that delve in the occult admit to this). Maybe you'll find it interesting. 😊
