How will Chinese kids look at you? Will they be surprised if you speak Chinese? How about if you speak perfectly, will you still be an alien to them? Will the kids react the way you think they will or will you be more shocked than them?

It's because when they say someone is from a country, the say the country and then they add person after. For example 中国 (zhong guo) = China, 中国人(zhong guo ren) = Chinese or 美国 (Mei guo) = The US, 美国人 (Mei guo ren) = American, really works with any country just add 人 (ren), which means person at the end. So in this case when they said 你是什么人?(ni shi shen me ren?) = what person are you?, it's just asking you what country are you from

I was greeted when I was in Egypt [1996], by a class of children just being released. Many crowded around me, touching my clothes, asking why I wore those clothes [jeans, tee shirt], why my hair was strawberry blonde and were astonished at my blue eyes! @Joanna_135
@Joanna_135 5 месяцев назад
@@GD-xc4wg I'm a redhead and it happened to me in Japan every time I went. Japanese people just tend to be a little quieter about it, but they'll stare, point, gossip, and they'd try to touch my hair. Especially the ones who aren't from the touristy parts of Tokyo. Japan has less than 1% foreign population, and probably China has similar numbers. The xenophobia is ingrained- at least these kids are sorta friendly about it.
@GD-xc4wg
@GD-xc4wg 5 месяцев назад
@@Joanna_135 This is crazy to me. Mostly that today most people have a tv or access to internet. Even cartoons have different skin or hair color. I went once in China but I have dark hair so it dont really is diff to them lol but I did not notice anyone looking at us odd or creepy... I had kids of one of my friend who went in South Korea and they said ppl spy on them, some odd men come talk non sense to them. Its creepy. Scary. By the way Japan must have been incredible to visit in term of architecture :)
@Joanna_135
@Joanna_135 5 месяцев назад
@@GD-xc4wg yeah but if you'd never seen a cartoon or actor in person and then they were right there, might make you a little curious. Tbh people have been touching my hair and asking to clip some off to take to the salon all my life so it wasn't really new, just annoying. Redheads make up about 1% of the world population, so it tracks that anyone who falls under that visibly different 1% (like foreigners in Japan and China and probably Korea) they'd get a lot of attention. It was- it's nice to visit but living there... takes a certain kind of strength.

We are Canadian and went to China when our blonde hair blue eyed daughter was 8 years old. We visited a couple of small towns where everyone would look and come out of their shops just to see us. Well, when I was born, my Mom's friend said: "Welcome to the world little Earthing."😊 That is the best thing to ever say to anyone, because it recognizes a person born as a person of the world, Earth, rather than being so divisive and just only noticing differences rather than being inclusive. Similarly to other language, they dont have a word for people from a specific country the way English has American for people from america or Italian for those from Italy. They just call them america person. Which is why she said what person are you instead of where are you from. I mean they do say that too but a direct translation would be more of ' where you come from' some other ways theyd ask where a foreigner is from would be 'you are a person of which country' or simply 'which country are you'

I once had a little girl (in very rude old man Japanese) ask me what person I was and I said “I’m an American person, what about you?” And she shyly smiled and said “I’m from Kushiro…” It’s so cute, sometimes they pick up a little hostility from their surroundings but they don’t even know it. @@kristie979 Asians are super diverse, yes. But I meant foreigners in general, not non-Asian. They could react this way towards a Korean person or a Japanese person as well, however it’s kind of obvious that they’re more likely to react this way to seeing a black or white person for the first time. In many countries, there are large populations of people who have little to no socialization with foreigners of any kind. It’s really not hard to believe that a young Chinese child has never seen a foreigner before. What experience would they have had? That’s not to be rude either, I didn’t know people with disabilities existed until I was in kindergarten because I was only ever around my family. It’s near impossible for kids to meet strangers as it is, let alone foreigners who are seen as rare in those parts of the world.

"Where is she?" => "What part she is?" I also like how a lot of dialects influenced by West African languages, the dialect here included, are similar to Chinese in that they don't use an auxiliary before an adjective (zero copula I think it's called). @@chrisjlee2013 It depends on the context it is used, but in most cases “gweilo” is not used in a derogatory sense. “Gwei” is also not used as an insult in Cantonese. Simply uttering the term is not necessarily a racist behaviour. There was a related court case where the boundary between “gweilo” being an endearment and a racist insult was clearly explained.

@@yushi9376 Yeah and what do you think the context was back then? It was a way to mock white people behind their backs

@@chrisjlee2013 If a black person uses the n word to refer himself/herself, does it count as racism?

@Fedsmoker4455 maybe go to a homogeneous country as someone with a different skin or facial feature and understand they’ll be naturally curious. You’re the close minded one here.

@Fedsmoker4455you can go to a democratic country like South Korea with a more open minded population and people will STILL be excited to see a foreigner speaking the native language, especially if you’re not even Asian/East Asian. It’s just part of visiting a homogenous country.
