As I put my Chinese linear rails and bearings into use, I found that the bearings have a nasty little secret. Watch this video so you can account for it.
This is nothing that would stop me from buying them again in the future, but it would have saved me an hour of head scratching.
See the general review video I did on the entire linear motion setup from China.

These are not precision parts, even on high precision linear guides you don't locate them this way. Counterbore instead of countersink and leave 0.5-1mm clearance (20-40 thou) to allow for any misalignment. You only experienced issues because you assumed your method would be better than the standard way it's done.

100% right. This is an engineer's reply ! Unfortunately a few people have heard of pocket holes and drill bits to do them are not so common.

I think you are right. I mentioned that in one of my other machine overview videos. One of the things you have assumed incorrectly is that I know the 'standard' way. The best part of this (social media), is hopefully your comment will help the next person. I'm going to pin it to the top. As @loco lobo said above, however, few people have the tooling for counter bores, so I will note for them, that anything BESIDES the flat heat tapered screws like I used would be better. ~P.
@thomasallan5042
@thomasallan5042 7 лет назад
Haha you're right I did think that ;) One way it's often done is to simply leave the head of the screw protruding and design around this, obviously this isn't always possible but it's nice to not need to counterbore if you can get away with it. I hope your machine is working out for you!

Made the same mistake the first time i used linear rails, but quite fast i realized countersink any fixtures for rails is a middle-good idea^^ Also never countersink any supported rails or so, makes it super painful to align the rail.

Good on you for showing your work and leaving in your “mistakes” so that others may learn from them. I try to leave in my mistakes instead of editing them out for the same reason.

This just saved me weeks of waiting for ordering new slides that I thought had worn out. Turns out every single one of them was machined slightly different, and I just had to account for that on my slides. My machine now has never ran better. Thanks a million!

hi mate. IV been looking at these units on AliExpress so this video was great. One question- you mention lash adjustment- how is this done with these bearings? do you deliberately push them out of square in relation to the rail? I haven't had any exposure to them before so any information much appreciated.

Funny you should bring this up, many years ago I worked on a project with another person and the holes in that component were all marked out, drilled and then countersunk.........the result was that the c/sinks aligned the screws exactly to the hole centres, whereas being hand drilled from marked off centre punched points the hole centres drifted with the drilling........this was found out after a lot of head scratching and resulted in counterboring the holes with clearance around the screws.....they lined up and were later dowled in place. I came across this phenomena many times in later years when holes that had clearance were then countersink......it works OK for through holes that have parts bolted together with nuts and not tapped, but NEVER when the second part is a series of tapped holes,

I recently made PC gaming rudder pedals using the same slide bearings shown here. I ran into the exact same problem plus one more. On only one slide 2 of the holes were approximately 8mm instead of the 6mm that all the others were. I ended up redoing the plates that they bolted onto to compensate for the shoddy placement and buying 8mm bolts for the oddballs. Autozone just down the street had the 8mm bolts saving me wait time on ordering them. Next time I order I'll definitely avoid the cheap Chinese slide bearings.

Interesting -- I just came up with the same problem. Not sure yet the solution will be the same. I used counter sink holes because my plate was not thick enough to allow counter bores knowing that there could be problems with the counter sink holes. Yup not precision parts. My ball screw nut housing had all the holes drilled off center. Had to drill and tap new holes on the other end of the housing.

I know what you are talking about brother, and it's frussssssstrating. I suggest that you use counter boring instead of countersinking. A countersink screw's head is never concentric with the thread which adds to you problem of the holes being out of position. With a counter bored hole you at least have some clearance to play with. I'm glad that I watched your video which made me aware of this problem because I'm going to use 26 of these bearings (20 mm) on the CNC mill I'm busy with. I intended to counter bore the holes from start.

The simple solution, albeit a little time consuming, is to instead of having countersunk holes, have counterbored slots, so you can make those small "micro adjustments" to get it all aligned, then red Loc-tite all the hardware.

Is there any noticeable difference to having the rails mounted on top of their respective locations or the side? Is there an advantage to the amount of “play” or slop in mounting them one way or another in your opinion? Thanks!

For no scientific reason, I felt that mounting them on the side or bottom would put pressure on the aluminum housing making the "C" shape want to open up. I have seen them used on their side in many designs. ~P

There's actually a use to the “problem“ you have. This is very common in linear guiding systems. The holes are hardly ever centered on the Slides. There is almost alwas a Stop-Edge on these. But only on one side ! From this edge you have a certain distance to the center of your Rail. So you could Mill another Stop-Edge on your Base-Plate and push it against the Slides. Sorry for my bad English.

I own ezcnc in Plano Texas. We fix a lot of Chinese machines. The knock off hiwin parts are not worth the savings. I have had to fully rebuild brand new machines that customers bought from places like industrial Cnc that imports from China. Spend the extra for hiwin, thk, Iko, or Thompson. You get what you pay for. Same with electronics. There is a reason why Oriental motor stepper motors cost more than parts bought from amazon or eBay, they last and have much better power. It’s what is inside that matters.

Common practice on setting up your rails, not the slides, the rails is to mount just one side first. Then use your plate with all four linear bearings to align the 2nd rail and everything becomes aligned with eachother.

hi, i just bought my lead screws from banggood,come with brass TEE nut,got some anti backlash nuts too,that's it,for a machine like this or smaller (mine) bearings guides can be made easy,using european or just plain "WESTREN" made bearings,i did search and found the fully supported tyes here,but people get good accuracy from drawer sliders,though for this machine and the one(s) i want ,sealed ball or roller types by skf etc,running on square tube mounted on some stiff aluminium extrusion is super easy,AND the parts are cheap to replace,my big problem is shipping,ot the cost,but the damage that can be inflicted on a length of bearing rod,supported or not,it's bad enough i have to wait to see if my 8mm x 2mm lead spacing screws come bent,at 700mm long for the Y axis it can be ruined easy by a moronic sender or carrier,i hope they are supported,but they are cheap enough,with the fittings i got and bought i can ,though i don't want to,get them closer,but for quite a bit more,plus insane p+p,free from china!!!!,yet more from a euro dealer,i digress,linear slides/rails of a supported nature can be made cheaper and better,unless your machine is for ultra super accuracy to the Nth degree,like i mention ,i've seen realy good resolution from goofy looking builds all over youtube,a good set of tools and some brains can go along way,plus the machine when done can make parts we humans can only dream of making(accuracy wise).

Totally agree...you never mount linear bearings with countersinks....Also the distance from the outside of the casting to the center of the hole means nothing. you measuring out size. that should not matter at all toleranse could be 1inch if that fits. bigger issue and that should be correct is holes should be in centre of bearing. block can be any size out even not square if mounting holes is paraller to railing and centre. there is problem if they make it using sides to make them and not centre. you can try flip bearing housing and see will if holes go other size. then they not centre. order new ones they cheap that whats you get sometimes. no panic order many extra still cheaper than good quality ones. and its only mounting holes you can move holes on plate

Not really ;( I have yet to reach the point where I can justify the costs. For 'generally' better, I would stay off ebay and amazon. Also wouldn't go with the lowest price. ~P

We can only blame ourselves as we shouldn’t have to rely on the Chinese , we should be manufacturing our own at a competitive price.

They all have that same secret, the more expensive the less obvious. The tech sheets will tell you to mind the orientation.

You get what you pay for. To avoid the "issues" you have you must pay 10 times more for precision parts, so what do you expect? Besides, use socket screws with washers. The screws you have used are NOT the right type for the purpose, not even if you super glue them with loctite.

Well...yes. I didn't read anything that said the hole location tollerence was +- a whole bunch.

Never underestimate communist Chinese precision! it's like USSR precision, it is pretty similar. Now imagine buying combustion engine parts. Yes you guest it it was a phukin rolling the dice. By the way i am either russian nor commie or chinese. How do i know the commie engineering well, my friend wonted to go exotic on a motorcycle so he bought a Ural :). He would be much better off with a polish Junak butt they are very rare.

Your video is 6,5 minutes too long. "Hi guys, I slided 1 bearing over the wrong way round, silly mistake." takes 6 seconds.

Old chinese saying, 'best time to rob your neighbor is when his house is on fire'.. pretty well sums up the care factor from cheap chinese products, of all types!

Thank you so much. I was just about to order one. Now i will only buy USA made. They are exporting junks from China.

some of the best linear bearings are made in China. And that includes those with US labels in them. It has nothing to do with what country they are made in. There's plenty of junk produced state side. It simply has to do with the quality/tolerances specified by the end product manufacturer. Before buying all you have to do is look at specs. If you know what specs to look for and what they mean. The only "nasty secret" was the guy posting this video didn't notice there was a right and a left to the linear bearing block. lol... and that my friend, it probably one of the most produced American crap product... Blame.
