This video is dedicated to my mother and family sharing my family tradition on Chinese New Year Eve. We start the morning with prayers to our ancestors at 11 am welcoming our ancestors home for a feast. This is followed by my mother and sister making the popiah fillings. I joined them for the first time to make the fillings. The rest of our family members will come in the evening for a reunion to eat mother's popiah. She does this once a year during Chinese New Year. The video is mostly spoken in my dialect, which is Penang Hokkien. You can catch up on my earlier videos on how to make my family popiah fillings and for us who lives overseas I have done a video on how to make your own popiah skin or popiah wrapper we called "popiah puih". • How to make fresh spri...

Thank you. Penang is culturally rich and continue to practice and preserve our cultures and traditions, learning from our ancestors. Mostly our Taoism tradition among the Chinese. But we also celebrate the diversity of our country in multiculturalism among our Indian, Muslim, Thai, Burmese and Eurasian communities. Cheers, Victor

Sawaddee krab….we do share some similarities passed down by our Chinese ancestors. I remember seeing Taoism practices in southern Thailand like Phuket and Songkhla old town same same as my hometown, George Town in Penang island 😊

The table at 0:14 looks like my family's Christmas, Easter and CNY table. Delicilous. A. very beautiful and tasty table. My family mainly live in Australia now, from my father's generation but they are from Sibu (aka "Little Fuchow"), Sarawak (Hokkien and Fuchow speaking) and our family celebrations are always a mix of Western and Nyonya/Chinese dishes. My Aunty makes the Poh Piah, my uncle makes the rendang and loh bak (and if we are lucky chicken curry) , another aunty makes char kway teow, another bee hoon and sliced pork in ginger. I usually cook a huge lasagna when I go and we also have barbecue. - a mix of Australian sausages and often tumeric chicken and very rarley special treat satay. It's a very multicultural meal but mainly based on Malaysian Chinese foods. To my ang mo lang ear Penang hokkien sounds pretty much the same as Sibu Hokkien. I don't speak (i'm born in Australian with eurpoean mother chinese father) but I learnt some words when I lived in Sibu for one year around 1982 and did form IV at an english speaking high school.

Thank you for sharing your story. What a joyous occasion and family feast. The dishes you mentioned sound so similar to what we do in Penang. But I’m sure they taste slightly different just like our laksa. I’ve been to Kuching once several years ago. That was my first time experience in East Malaysia. I was delighted to find it was easy for me to converse in Hokkien with the locals at the shops. I didn’t get to try much of the food there. It was a short trip. Cheers, Victor

Victor, I’m so envious and jealous at the same time. So happy you got to spend precious CNY with your precious lovely family. My mother is also from Penang and I miss listening to that Penang Hokkien whah. My granny used to make amazing poh piah too, delicious yummmmmmm. I think you over fed Steven in Australian by the looks of it, lucky him. Take care and can’t wait for the nest episode x

Victor, Are you in the Philippines? I can understand your mom’s Hokkien accent clearly but your accent takes me a few mins to make out what you are saying. It’s not a bad thing though but I was wondering/curious if you speak Filipino/Tagalog as I have relatives who also resides in the Philippines and you have a similar accent as theirs, but it’s not 100% the same. If you do live there or speak another language not, it doesn’t really matter. It’s just great to hear my primary language in these videos. And I love the rolls that you guys are making. My mom didn’t want to make them this year because of the sheer amount of work required. This is really an intense labour of love. 🥰🥰🥰

Hi @Let Me Think About It…I’m not from Philippines. I was born and grew up in Penang, Malaysia. But I live overseas for a long time and doesn’t have anyone to converse in Penang Hokkien unless I’m back in Penang. I’ve learnt something new from you today, and that we share similar Chinese culture from Fujian province brought by our ancestors. It is a lot of work making popiah during Chinese New Year. My mother wasn’t going to make it this year too. But, she decided to do it anyway but on a smaller scale just for our immediate family (since I was home) enough for 2 days. She won’t be making it next year. She is getting old and my mother is getting old and it is too much work. Thanks for sharing your story. Cheers, Victor

@@foodtripwithvictor Hi Victor, I appreciate you taking the time to reply and thank you. Some RU-vidrs do not reply at all. But sorry I mistook your Hokkien accent as one that is similar to my relatives in the Philippines. I am trying to figure out what exactly kind of Hokkien accent I have. As I don’t hear very many people with the same one as mine. But yes, I really enjoyed your video because it is great that our mothers are willing to put in the time to make such a complicated and work intense dish just to make her children happy. When you look back at this video you will remember the happy times. It’s so precious to have and you sharing that moment makes me feel happy for you. I wish you nothing but happiness and success on this channel and look forward to your next video. 😁

@@letmethinkaboutit8982 The Penang accent is based off old Southern Zhangzhou accent spoken by the early Sangley settlers in the Philippines. I've heard some Tsinoys who speak with the "Quanzhou" accent, but it's different from the Southern Malaysian "Quanzhou" or "Xiamen" accent. Hope this helps.
