As a safety professional, I totally agree with your comments and that the legislation has not caught up with modern technology. Well said, you will more support on this than you think.
@Ian6630premium
@Ian6630premium 2 месяца назад
But where to you draw the line? An agricultural tractor built 100 years ago is designated the same as one built today. HSE would class them both under the umbrella of agricultural machines even though the more modern ones are probably safer than some of the 10-15 year old cars on the roads today. Surprisingly the law isn’t as archaic as I thought and was actually revised in 1998…

At the end of the day it's comen sense. Others like you Olly have to educate your children about the dangers on the farm 🚜.

@@2626stephen I agree with you there it’s common sense but HSE rules are very black and white with no definition between modern tractors with enclosed cabs,buddie seats and seat belts and open platform tractors with just a roll bar or canopy roof. Just done a quick google and there’s no actual age restrictions on pillion passengers on a motorbike…I know I’d feel safer with my child in a tractor cab than hanging on to the back of a performance motorbike!

35years ago as a 5 year old sat on the toolbox seat of my dads international 955 whilst he baled straw/ploughed fields was without doubt one of the best memories of my life. And not only planted the seed of agriculture in my head but made me and my father as close as we are today. Its a silly law

Things in Britain are badly wrong. Politicians are mad & bad. Food production is being hammered to satisfy food importers under the excuse of the green agenda. Farmers are persecuted for training up their youngsters. Over 60 y ago I learned to drive both a tractor & a land-rover at 12. Good life skills that have served me well. My cousin was killed walking on the road outside the farm at 14. Where is the sense in any of that?

Olly - having grown up.on a farm and worked at a senior level in health and safety for over 35 years which includes 15 years at HSE as an inspector - I 100% agree modern cabs with buddy seats and restraint belts are a world away from the days of old. I have been involved in investigation of fatalities including a handful of devastating child fatalities on farms - they were a world away from where we are now. FYI the regulations apply going to or from or during 'an agricultural operation' - a decent lawyer would argue 'giving rides' is not that.... This needs modernising. The regulations date back to times when we didn't have to wear seat belts or be in child seats and we could ride around with 5 of us on the back seat of a Ford sorting estate.

I’m not a farmer but I am a father & grandfather and I know I would be much happier with them learning in a safe environment like the cab of one of your new modern tractors sat in a seat with a belt on rather than walking round the farm. 100% right Olly I do a bit of mowing and topping for a friend of mine and some of the fields are very close to houses and sometimes they are kids standing on their fences looking at me. I will stop and ask them to go inside or ask you're parents if they can sit up with me which I have no problem with. We all know what speeds mower blades go at and if it hits the wrong thing it becomes a missile simple fact. Even if I'm mowing the lawn I prefer if the child is on my lap rather than looking at me from a distance.

Non farmer here, but having sat through more site induction and safety meetings than I care to think about, I completely agree with your comments. Children have to learn what is and isn't safe and there's no better way than being with a responsible adult and I fail to see how a modern tractor with a passenger seat and belt could be regarded as unsafe, they're at less risk in the tractor than cycling down the road to school.

You are 110% correct Olly the law needs changing as sitting in a tractor is the safest place for a child to be, one way to look at it is modern tractors are much safer than very old cars that children are allowed to ride in that don't have isofix or proper seat belts, how does that make any sense. Happy to be a lone voice here. Yes, plenty of people had halcyon days sitting on the mud-guard of an olf MF165 etc, and when everything is going well then the instructor seat in a modern tractor is a very safe place to be. However - what happens if something goes wrong? The operator has to get out of the cab? That is where the danger lies - how can you guarantee that a 9 year old won't press the PTO button? How easy is it to knock the tractor / combine into drive? There is a reason that agriculture has the highest injury rate amongst industries. A farm is basically a modified building site / manufacturing plant and children are not allowed there for a reason.

Quite agree with you Olly 👍🏻 the law is out of date and needs improvement. Farm parents know the dangers and will not subject their children to unnecessary risk. However, unfortunately common sense is not so common any more. Especially since COVID- although it happened before then, it wasn’t as apparent - we as a nation are unable to assess our own risk. They warn us when it’s hot……in summer 🤷🏼‍♂️ They warn us when it’s cold…..in winter They warn us when it’s going to rain……in the Uk 🇬🇧 🤦🏼‍♂️ Yes as I commented yesterday, it was a thoroughly enjoyable video, thanks for sharing your day out with us all.

I’m gonna add to the comments as although it’s basically the same as the above, someone needs to see all these comments almost as a petition because children growing up around farms/in the yard isn’t in itself an issue it’s the fact that they dart around all over the place as kids do and most likely because they want to see what’s going on because of their interest in it. Rather than banishing them to the house (or the iPad/tv etc) because a silly law says you can’t have them in the cab most definitely needs updating. Echoing above, they’re safer in the cab with you, with a seatbelt on being educated rather than from a far with more potential dangers around. Love the video as always Olly. Always watch sat in the tractor when I get 5 (on a construction site.. i knoooow 🙄) nice to see a bit of family time yesterday. We all need it! Keep up the sterling work and all the team with you.
