Thank you for this! Especially the hint about turning duplex to "off." So many throw an absolute fit about Baofengs "because they can be set to transmit out of amateur bands." Well, number 1 - just because the machine can do something that breaks the rules doesn't mean it should be held accountable. I wonder how many of these fudds, lids, and sad hams would blame cars for drunk driving fatalities, guns for murders, and spoons for fatness?! No! It is the person using them the wrong way, not the object itself. And just because out of band frequencies can be programmed doesn't mean they shouldn't be. Be responsible! Turn the duplex to "off!" Think back to your tech quiz! YOU are responsible for your station! Same way YOU are responsible for your car! Just because you "are afraid to drive" (aka, use a Baofeng) doesn't mean you get to dictate that I shouldn't be able to use one when I can use it responsibly and not transmit outside my band privileges! Also, remember, it isn't against any rule to listen to anything over the radio! What gets people into trouble is TXing!

The Bao, because of it's useful properties, is great in a SHTF scenario when you can choose from multiple modes of communication. Don't bash the Bao, embrace it.

The same thing can be said for our Second Amendment right just because you have a gun doesn't mean you can handle that gun irresponsible you're the one responsible for the gun not just the gun Common Sense will tell you again doesn't have a mind of its own it's the person that's operating it the same way with our radios we don't go out of band and transmit when we're not license for it we can like you say however listen to it it's okay to do that irresponsible

Absolutely! It's hard to beat a 20 dollar HT. My old UV-5r died; so I just ordered another one so I can back into ham radio. Apparently the current models are limited to TX on the ham bands. But you can jailbreak them for general TX. I like that it requires deliberate effort to TX out of band. Maybe this will keep people from using these for MURS, FRS ETC. But like you said it's the responsibility of the individual not the radio.

Wow this is what a newbie (like me) needs to get started! I got my Technician license last week and have met with a few club members . One of them suggested just play with your radio and figure it out. Easier said than done. I feel confident after watching your video and downloading CHIRP and playing with it. I have subscribed to your channel and look forward, with confidence, to experience my Ham!

So, at 66 I am dipping my toes into HAM radio and starting on the path to getting my Tech license. This video was very easy to follow for someone like me that has never touched a HAM radio before. Many thanks for this video it made programing my new radio painless and the CHIRP program is so much easier than trying to use the radio keypad.

Cool. I've been using CHIRP for several years. Haven't needed to use it lately so didn't know there was a Next. Looks good. I really like the function you used with the NOAA copy and paste where CHIRP does the correction for the legality and then drops it in. Handy when adding freqs you want to monitor. Appreciate the time to show the new features. 73

Great video...studying for my Tech but wanted to get hands-on listening on my radio. Watched your video...took a lot of the anxiety of trying to program my radio. Pulled in Noaa...FRS and GMRS (duplex off) and local repeaters.....then flashed a second radio with same profile. Super Easy!

Another NOOB just getting started by exploring anything ‘HAM’ radios, accessories, DOs and DONT’s and finding it fairly overwhelming. This and a few other videos, yours and others, are gold mines full of nuggets for us. This is perhaps the most complicated part .. got a new radio .. now what. One step, one video, one new piece of information at a time. Thanks for the assist.

I just passed both the technician's and general exams last night, the VECs who ran the test session invited me to join the local amateur radio club and to help out with an upcoming public service event. I've had a Baofeng radii for a couple of months, but I couldn't figure out how to use CHIRP. I just followed your video step-by-step, and YAY! I'm up and running!! Thank you so very much for this informative video. We offer all new hams a free Boafeng UV5R and do teaching around a table on Tuesday nights. Thank you, Josh. This was one of the most well-presented RU-vid videos I've seen. You made the information clear and easy to understand, particularly for the new ham user. Your sequencing was logical, personal, and surgically on target. You emphasized and repeated as necessary the most important information as you proceeded through the video, keeping the viewer fully engaged in the process being described. You maintained a consistent empathetic register without lapsing into techspeak. An outstanding presentation. Thanks, again, and keep it up.

One thing I miss with the new version is the ability to import an already existing profile. I do like that I can now filter for both 2 meter and 70cm instead of having to query them separately. I also like the fact I can now query for only repeaters with FM mode and filter out the digital modes. Although I did notice that it may still omit repeaters that you can use analog FM while digital modes are also being used. My club's 70cm repeater is capable of Fusion and WIRES, but you can still transmit using analog FM while someone is transmitting digital.

I like the new version of Chirp. I have RT systems on some of my units but Chirp works well. I sometime become the guy that programs the Newbie's HT. I usually set it up so they have all the same repeaters in the same location on the unit as everyone else. Makes it easier to explain what channel to change to. I also like to use it to program by Kenwood TH-F6A. the program Kewnood provides is really out of date for doing that. Always enjoy your videos. 73

Thank you for this video. One issue I encountered that may not have been emphasized enough is that if you do the programming and your radio does not accept programming - check the programming cable plug into the side of the radio and make sure it is plugged in securely as it can be difficult to determine if it is connected properly and this will prevent the radio from accepting programming.

Thanks for the Video, Josh! FYI Radioddity now has a cable that works with Windows 11and the GT-5R, BaoFeng PC001 FTDI USB Programming Cable. The previous cable was not supported in Win 11 (Baofeng UV-5R Programming Cable), it uses a Prolific 2303 chip that is old technology that MS dropped in Win11. The folks at Radioddity were very helpful and sent me the new cable at no cost and not requiring me to return the old one. I also had a problem with one of the chargers that came with my 2 - GT-5R's and since they had no new chargers in stock sent me another complete radio setup (without a return) to replace the defective charger. You can't beat Radioddity's customer service! I like this little GT-5R, though it needs the 3800mah Batt Pack to feel right in my hand, its too tiny in my hand with its stock 1800mah BP. I've been licensed since '76 and see no need for a different handheld. 73 mike N4ONL

Excellent demonstration of the new software 👍 Such a coincidence. I have a Baofeng UV-5RIII, which I bought few years back but not really used it much. Yesterday got it out of the cubbard, watched some video in RU-vid and found about the CHIRP software and downloaded it and installed it. Found that I did not have a data table, then ordered a data cable. This morning saw your vide and found that the software which I downloaded was the NEW CHIRP software. Then watched your full video and it gave me lots of confidence. Now waiting for the data cable to arrive. Can you please make a video for people who live in UK and what Frequency they can LISTEN on their Baofeng UV-5RIII?

I just used this today and was wanting to ask for a video! Man, TBH, I kinda regret updating; there is still a lot of bugs to be worked out. I recommend sticking with the older “legacy” version for at least a couple more months. It was WAY easier to reorganize channels before. Some software errors when changing settings to loaded station lists required redoing download and going back a step. For now, no bueno.

So easy. I bought 2 UV5Rs (one BF and one Greaval from Amazon. (I got the Greaval cuz it came with all the goodies. Both came with a better antenna.) I did one set up on the computer and was able to transfer it to both radios seamlessly. Easy peasy. So good.

And the programming cable that came with the Greaval actually worked! Woot!

I programmed my baofeng a couple weeks ago and had to install the old chirp to get it to work right.
