Come along on a Jeep Safari through Chitwan National Park - this is the best way to get deeper into this wide area of 932 km². I really recommend you a full day ride, as this is how we got to see 11 rhinos in one day alone!!!
Take a look at the Jungle walk and Canoe ride: • Chitwan Jungle Walk an...
or best of wildlife: • Chitwan National Park ...
As we loved the first Safari experience, we wanted to repeat the adventure and did two days of game drives. The ride takes you through open grass land to dense 6m high elephant grass areas and deep woods with trees full of grey langur monkeys and birds like the Marabu and several kinds of kingfisher as well as peacocks, storks and swamp francolins on the ground. A bengal monitor lizzard climbed up on a tree as well. We could even watch a successful frog hunt of a Pallas Fish Eagle. Wild boar and several kinds of deer from spotted deer to the biggest one, the sambar deer are quite frequent and make it a prefered hunting ground for the shy tiger, which we could not spot on our trip. But plenty of tiger footprints even of a mother and a cub indicated an existing population.
As there is a lively Rhino population of approx. 694 Rhinos in Chitwan, you will be garanteed to find... at least one! Either they are munching their grass on the planes or looking for rhino apples in the woods. The rest of the day they love to spend in and around river streams and water holes to cool down from the heat and enjoy a decent mud bath.....for hours!
The only sign of the sloth bear we could find was fresh poo on the path and old poo up on the top floor of a watch tower (!). So I guess sloth bears enjoy the view as much as we do. A stop at a watch tower gives you a good possibility to watch over the high elephant grass areas, which you can´t see from below, inside this green grass maze.
And than you need to make plenty of stops to enjoy the silence and wait for things to happen. Again water areas are popular among all animals from crocs to deer, fishing birds and rhinos.
Another chance to get a good view is waiting along the straight dirt roads which animals have to cross at some point. You often find heavily used paths of rhinos with their footprints with tunnels or smashed grass right and left. Herds of deer and wild boar pass by so why not a tiger, a leopard or a wild elephant by luck?
We did see a huge king cobra poking its head out of the grass to check the the situation first. After a while it crossed the 3m wide path and continued to do so for a while which made me guess it´s size of maybe 5m (!). A massive snake. Keep that in mind when you do the Jungle Walk (and check out my video about the jungle walk). The other big snake we could witness was a python rolled up in its hideout - or waiting for prey to pass by.
