Check out my blog post about this trip with photos: www.chixwithtri...
I've traveled father on a full size bike, but never a mini-125cc motorcycle and there is something addicting about it. We decided to ride from Houston to Austin and back, about a 200 mile ride each way on mostly back roads. We encountered curious people, traffic jams, hills and even had to ride on a 75mph highway.

I drive a Honda PCX 150 that I love. I wonder how the 2 compare. One thing you said I disagree with. I see much more in a car. I have to watch he road more closely on a bike. Be careful as things happen quick on a bike. Great video!

+chixwithtrix Did it last year on a Z750 and 700miles the first day. Was an amazing experience and loved every second. Want to see how much more of a challenge it would be on a Grom sticking to national roads :)

Great vid! How long did that take you in total, one way from Houston to Austin (not Lake Travis)? I'm planning on going on similar road trips with my wife and she's going to be on a Grom, so it's nice to see that it's very much possible even on a tiny bike like the Grom! If you ever go back to the Austin area on your Grom I recommend you taking a trip down to Wimberley in the Hill Country. It's an awesome ride as long as you stay off the I-35 and do back roads only (I recommend going via Driftwood). Wimberley itself is a really nice and funky little town with good places to eat and things to see. It's about an hour one way.
@ChixLife
@ChixLife 8 лет назад
Thanks for the tips! I used to live in Austin and yes, Wimberley has some cool places to visit. The trip to Austin probably took about 5 or so hours. That's with food and gas stops so not bad. Really fun to do!
@mannydcbianco
@mannydcbianco 8 лет назад
+chixwithtrix We're going to take it slow and make stops for food and gas and stretching our legs just like you guys did, I think that's the best/only way to do it on a small bike. It's about the journey just as much as it's about the destination when you're riding a bike. It's an adventure. Thank you for the reply! Now I'm off to watch part two of this video :)

Watch out for crew cab trucks if you are on a small bike. Especially if it's lifted. Drivers of those abominations think they own the road, and probably don't care if they run over you. I don't own a Grom (yet) but I have a Yamaha XT225 and a Royal Enfield Bullet. Top cruising speed on both is about 60 mph. I am constantly being tailgated by crew cab trucks, even in the right lane.

@Brakelateatmsn
@Brakelateatmsn 8 лет назад
What kind of MPG are you guys getting, running them almost flat out like that over long distances? Are those small diameter tires starting to 'square off' from all the flat and level riding in town and on this trip or are they holding up well? How many miles on yours so far total now?
@ChixLife
@ChixLife 8 лет назад
Haven't calculated the milage, but probably 70-90mpg still. Tires are fine, still have good profile since the bike doesn't weigh much or have any power. I have a little over 900 miles on mine now.
@Brakelateatmsn
@Brakelateatmsn 8 лет назад
+chixwithtrix All the little tricks you have to use to ride them, like drafting, etc. (and the fun it is doing so) reminds me so much of a 'mini-DRZ-400SM'. If they come out with either version of those Scrambler Prototypes I have seen photos of floating around (particularly the Silver one) I afraid I ability to resist will be crushed and I will absolutely have to get one - or a pair, to ride with friends! Thanks for the responses as usual!

based on body weight, what is the Max, a person should weigh to ride one of these?
@ChixLife

@dcijams
@dcijams 7 лет назад
I push 280, @ 6'4" tall/ reason I ask, I'm looking for a bike to do the Key West to Prudhoe Bay ALaska challenge next year. the last guy did it on a 250 honda, in 17 days. he had a co-rider & stayed in motels. I plan to do it in 14 days all camping. but on a 125cc bike

@dcijams 7 лет назад
honda sells a cl 125, but not in america.
@dcijams
@dcijams 7 лет назад
5558 miles one way, but I will also be riding the bike back to Florida
@ChixLife
@ChixLife 7 лет назад
dcijams It is technically doable I suppose...but the safety and body wear and tear is very iffy. The Grom has trouble going up hills at sea level with a 150lb rider. Imagine in the mountains with no air available for the engine to make power. You'd get run over or break down more likely. The bike has 12" wheels that make it more darty than a larger motorcycle at speed so if the roads aren't great that could cause issues. And it is small so being so tall would make the ride pretty uncomfortable. The small framed 125cc Grom isn't really comparable to the full sized 125ccs more popular in Europe.
@bimotanon7251

@bimotanon7251
@bimotanon7251 7 лет назад
Dont worry i get your point, i get the whole adventure thing, but it's a shame that the roads didnt looked that fun, that's all. I am actually planning a trip around Europe for the next April, and it's sure as hell i wont do 21000km of straights roads. (I've thought about buying a grom, but unfortunately you can't put enough luggages on it, but that would have been fun, for sure)

Your aren't drafting, lol. You'd have to be a foot away from his back tire for it to make a lick of difference.
@ChixLife
@ChixLife 8 лет назад
Don't be ignorant. It makes a difference because any wind blocked by an object in front of you helps lower the wind resistance on your body/bike. Close proximity only makes it even easier, but you can drop into a vehicle's slip stream quite a ways back. How else would the Grom keep speed and accelerate easier when behind someone. Fairies?
@anishannayya1
@anishannayya1 8 лет назад
chixwithtrix Having worked extensively with a wind tunnel, I can assure you that at the distances you were at, you'd just be in his wake. The speed is likely a combination of environment (wind, grade, etc.) and placebo. Now a trailer truck would be a different story, but the plastic flaps companies are adding to the backs of trailers would mitigate that considerably.
@ChixLife
@ChixLife 8 лет назад
+anishannayya1 Hop on a Grom and follow another Grom. It helps, I don't care what the internetisms say.
