I agree with you that the performance is not live, but they definitely sing that well live just watch any of their tv performances. Hallee (the girl with the higher voice) is the one who will be the little mermaid, can´t wait for that either!

You should check them sing the National Anthem, you never heard this kind of version it's really good! They are really creative and write and produce all of their music! Halle plays guitar, Chloe piano! They are sisters btw :)

Their instagram has a lot of them just singing acoustic in their living room, and tbh they sound the exact same.

So I think if I remember correctly (totally correct me if I’m wrong though) they’re sisters that originally started out singing covers on RU-vid. I don’t know if their old channel is still up, but that could be a great place to start looking for live singing =)

For what it’s worth, I do think they sang this live 2 or 3 times and spliced it together to make this as seamless as possible. Could be wrong but you can also tell at a few times with camera cuts their arm placements aren’t in the same location (but the vocal works because they’ve kept it from a separate take). I’m sure they could do this consistently!

Also it is a live vocal there chops are just that perfect. The performance is over dubbed. So they sang it 2-3 times maybe even four and they take vocal chops from each take to compose one seamless stem.

Don't let overly sensitive people shame you into not commenting on whether or not a performance is live. Part of what makes you a fantastic educator is your ability to accept and repeat the truth about the videos you're analyzing. As always, great video, Sam.

I feel like sometimes fans are too defensive on whether a musician did or did not lipsync. It's just not a bad thing, if they did it because they had a bad day, they were not allowed to sing or if they just did not want to, and I really don't believe it speaks badly of their quality as artists since it can improve the overall performance. Take Kate Bush for example. She's iconic and obviously can sing, however, most of her 80s performances are not live, which imo allowed her to improve on dancing, gestures and general theatricality. Anyway, great video Sam!

You 100% need to watch a bunch of their videos from when they were even younger and putting videos on youtube to now being on Beyonce's label, their vocal awareness as individuals and as a duo is remarkable. I think you'd really enjoy analyzing their journey as a voice teacher!

Bc of COVID-19 this performance was pre-recorded at their home in their backyard, they just played the video on the livestream of RU-vid's Dear Class of 2020. I think all of the performances from that event were most probably pre-recorded, bc if they weren't the quality of sound and image would drastically change, lol! Chloe x Halle also performed at the Grammys before, BET, !!!!Super Bowl!!! They have a lot of great LIVE performances as well!

Someone on Twitter figured out how they were doing these performances from home (including the TODAY Show one); all of these takes are performed live but the track is one performance and the cuts/shots are picked out for the best looking image. So in every shot/recording they are singing live it's just someone edited it for aesthetics and choreo. These girls are powerhouses live. Truly.

Sam, these girls are epic! In their channel here, they have a version they did of Beyoncé's Pretty Hurts that got them signed to Bey's label. You can see how good they are there. (Also she brought them as opening act for the On The Run II Tour she did with Jay Z and they rocked!)

Their musicality is beyond! ungodly hour is a great album and I always feel the need to point out that chloe (girl with the darker voice) produces incredible tracks. She was the producer on their last album, and the main producer for this too. They`re so exciting to me and because of their musical independence I am sure they`ll be sticking around for a long time.

You HAVE to watch more of their live videos. Especially their performance of Everywhere on the James Corden Show. They’re signed by Beyonce after being discovered by her on RU-vid. They have an album that came out Friday called Ungodly Hour (along with a video for their song Forgive Me) please check it out. Their first album The Kids Are Alright got 2 Grammy nominations. Chloe is the oldest with the sultry lower voice, 22 years old. Halle is the youngest with the higher voice, 20 years old (she’s the one playing Ariel).

About the live singing.... as someone who has done some live videos (a few in front of the camera.... more behind) it's likely they recorded live on a take and then recorded other angles and such to that track. So one of the takes might actually be a live.

This show is entirely live besides the backing vocals for the chorus.

I think maybe they just recorded a bunch of times and used “one live audio” but footage from different takes if that makes any sense, because anyway it sounds really different from the studio version

Love the forensic like honesty in your reviews. They are awesome singers, and you can definitely find live videos of them singing on RU-vid before they made it big. I'd be curious to see you do a comparison video of them singing live in one of their older RU-vid videos and singing live now to see where their training has improved their vocal skills and abilities.

I feel like all the comments that are saying they are lip synching are from people who dont actually follow them or thier music...anyone who is actually familiar with these voices definitely knows nothing in this was lip synched...I honestly think that's so disrespectful. imagine working your ass off for a literal decade to perfect your god given instrument just for someone to say you were lip synching because it's to controlled etc...if you wanna say there was a pre recorded track fine....but dont say they were lip synching...I've watched these girls work to master their art for years...so just give credit where its do. say they did an amazing job. And keep it pushing.

They labeled it as a live performance on their IG. But I do think they had mic affects of course and good prerecorded live backing tracks. I noticed you said it wasn't live after Halle sang the one part without much lip movement, but I must say Halle does sing like that now. The words come out of her mouth with power so effortlessly now lmao. I think a good example is the song they did for quarantine with Anika Noni Rose "Almost There."

Partly because you're lovely, and partly because it's an excuse to watch the song again without feeling like i'm watching it again!

You have to get into them more, more live. Like Grammy's last year (2019), Superbowl LIII NFL America the Beautiful, Down at The Night Show with Jimmy Fallon. They are vocally EXCELLENT!

To me it seems that they are using backing vocals to give them more support while they do their little coreography (not necessarily during the whole song) and that's maybe why it sounds that in some parts they are singing live and in others we can hear it's pre recorded, but that's just my guess 😅.

Y’all. there is nothing wrong with lip syncing. Y’all do seem to forget that it’s STILL their beautiful voices. Lip syncing doesn’t mean an entirely different voice. Most artists do it because it’s very easy to lose your breath when doing choreo and moving a lot. Beyoncé, and artist with some of the best breath control of all, still gets out of breath after dancing sometimes, and that’s completely normal. They’re amazing and did an amazing job, and there’s nothing wrong with lip syncing. Pre-recorded is still lip syncing as well, and there’s still nothing wrong with it. They’re performers and it is okay. All y’all looking past all of the positively and making it seem like all that everybody is saying is that it’s not really their voices. It’s still their voice, and he is still loving them. Let’s stan our queens and just appreciate their performance, live or not.

Hi Sam, these young ladies are absolutely undeniably talented and amazing. They're sisters, which in my humble opinion when you have siblings that can sing, their harmony is like no other. I like watching your reaction to each thing that you really liked/enjoyed that they did, from the singing when Halle's (youngest of the two sisters is playing the Little Mermaid) voice comes in with the harmony, or when they both started dancing.😊 They've been singing together since they were little girls. They're both actresses as well. Love these two sisters!💖💖
