When heading out for a day or several days of offshore fishing, the more you know about the fishing conditions, the more likely you are going to catch fish. One bit data you can pull from satellite charting services, like Hilton's Realtime Navigator, that can come in real handy is chlorophyll. You really need to be able to collect and interpret the data these types of services offer.
Chlorophyll charts measure how much of this substance is in the water. It is the same thing that makes grass green. In the ocean, chlorophyll is found in phytoplanktonm which is a building block of the oceanic food chain. Higher concentrations of plankton or chlorophyll indicate green water. This is not really where you want to be, when fishing for marlin, wahoo or dolphin.
The charts allow you to see where the color change takes place. The color change is the line where blue or clean water meets green or dirty water. This point of intersection should also line up with the temperature break line. If you overlay the chlorophyll chart and the SST or sea surface temperature charts, you will see how the lines match up. This is the area where the fishing should be good.
With any kind of offshore fishing, having access to real time information on water conditions is critical. The sea conditions are constantly changing. Break lines are moving. You need to be able to find exactly where the water is most productive. Chlorophyll fishing charts are another piece in the puzzle or finding fish.
