Chocolate Poisoning in Dogs 

Hi Dr.Jones my dog is 14 and a half lbs. She's a rat terrier/bichon. She on the 21st between 10am and 3pm she ate 3oz of 72% dark chocolate, brand Endangered Species. I didn't notice her symptoms at first, took her to emergency and she was seen at 9pm. She did not throw up before then, she had diarrhea, shaking, increased heart rate, panting, and 103 temp. The emergency vet I took her to kept her overnight. They did not induce vomiting, they gave her charcoal, an if and an anti nausea. She ate and drank the next day and still had panting. The day after she didn't want to eat or drink, though I was able to get her to drink a tiny bit and eat some cat food. That night she started to play with a new toy, after about ten seconds started panting heavily, had to lay down and her respiratory rate was about 58 during the night. Her breathing has been gone since then and only panting to a lesser extent while at the vet. The vet yesterday did bloodwork, gave her an antacid and an iv that lasted for about ten to fifteen seconds, I don't know the amount, they called it an under the skin iv. She's been hiding under the bed a lot since I took her to the emergency one and is still not back to herself. Hasn't wanted to eat or drink except this previous evening before this early morning she did has some water and cat food of her own volition. Regular panel looks good, except rericulocyte is 116, basophyl .0009, glucose 111, creatinine 1.9, A ST 58, bilirubin unconjugated 0.0, bilirubin conjugated 0.1, creatinine kinase 822. Also, I had her amylase and kinase checked, amylase 543, kinase 1,103 so I think those are good. Former are the ones the looked out of range or close. Can a dog if her size with the amount she had still have symptoms going past three days since exposure and is there anything I should check or watch for- for purely entertainment purposes -_- of course Thank you

---We used Peroxide/called the poison control line ($65) /went to the 24hr Emergency Vet. Can't tell you what to do for your situation but by the time we got to the Vet (30min drive) she had already vomited allot...and they didn't do much and let us take her home to monitor her (they did not charge for just the short chat) she is a large dog so she did not eat enough to truly hurt her-good luck! **I will say time is NOT your friend in this situation and peroxide is "the right/safe amount for their weight"

my 20lb Bostie ate a box of Godiva choc. this past x-mas. could not take the chance and took him to ER. he did not show any signs of toxicity.

I have a toy Poodle, she is 8lbs and ate half a bar of 85%dark chocolate. she started shaking after about an hour and also started drinking lots of water. I induced vommit with a tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide, it took 3 minutes. I also slipped a pill of activated charcoal down her throat after she vomited. 30 mintues later her shaking is gone. she is going to be ok I hope.

Our 2.5 year old 70lb Golden Retriever consumed chocolate about 40 hours ago. About 12 hours after it happened, she woke us up and was super thirsty. 24 hours after it happened she looked fine. However 36 hours after ingestion, she vomited (twice). Now she is extremely lethargic and has no interest in food or water. Is this a sign that she's getting worse or is merely "resting up"?

This is very helpful, I have a question, what if a 20 pound dog has consumed 3oz dark chocolate and is showing symptoms after about 12 hours, surely it must have reached the blood by then, what is the treatment given, are they administered with an antidote for theobromine?

My little 10 lb dog ate almost a miniature milk chocolate and Immediately gave him a teaspoon of peroxide and 5'min he threw up. I called the Animal hospital and they told me he would b just fine since the size of chocolate was very little and it was milk choc. Thanks for this video. Can you do a video about grapes?!?!?

Thank you for this. I knew chocolate was toxic but no idea what the proportions were per unit of weight and when to start panicking. As it is we are very careful to keep chocolate out of range of our truly omnivorous and insatiable beagle but she is very clever and may outwit us one day. Thanks again.

Hi i tried to look at online vets but they are not helpful my pup at about 3/4 of a kingsize heath bar hes a 40 pound pit Chihuahua mix hes only vomiting but other then that hes normal playing eating sleeping layign down

If a dog should consume chocolate and then treatment is given and successful, the dog would still be dehydrated. I think that first some electrolyte fluid (Hydrolyte) 1 sache to 1 pint may for 1 or 2 days and then a gentle dose of probiotics. Maybe 3 days 1/8th in food or water of probiotics depending on how sick the dog had got.

But what about cocoa butter ? All by it's self?

My 50 lb. Labrador Retriever ate 6.8 oz of Hershey's Special Dark chocolate. The ASPCA Poison Control Hotline put me on indefinite hold. Totally useless. I'm in Los Angeles and 4 vet emergency hospitals told me they couldn't see the dog because they were "at capacity" (Covid-19?) and were "not allowed" to give me advice over the phone. I've given the dog activated charcoal until I can get him to his regular vet in the morning. I can't wait to go home to Wyoming. We had a dog, 8 yrs old at the time. Ate a whole boxful of peanut clusters, knocked them right off the shelf while we were away. He was "going" for the next two days. Drank a whole bunch of water I remember. Lived another 8 years, but never begged for a piece of chocolate again.
