Take a CPR class through the American Heart Association. It will teach you these techniques and more. It also teaches you what to do if the the attempt to remove the object fails and the person goes unresponsive.

@@amitdjp Huh? God has given you common sense and the ability to get trained in the event that one of your children starts choking. Sure you can pray away the possibility but life happens and God doesn't reward willful ignorance. I thank God that I was trained when my mom started choking and I was able to save her.

I’m here because my 2 year old choked a couple weeks ago with no sound/no air getting through. Was so traumatizing but I threw him over my shoulder and started pounding his back and his throat cleared thank you Jesus! She’s so right about staying around your child while they eat, because he was making no sound. If I was in the other room, i wouldn’t have heard and it may have ended badly.

My daughter was 18mth and choked on a chip. As a preschool teacher of 11yrs, I thank God I had that training over the yrs. You always wonder if you’ll handle that situation well or panic.. I must say, there wasn’t a seconds hesitation. Grabbed her, threw her over my thigh, face towards the floor and began thrusts on her back. She threw up everywhere but I couldn’t have cared less. She’s 3 1/2 now. I was so glad to hear you say choking can be silent. I’ve told my husband that so much, I would leave the room and ask him to watch her, he would respond “I’m right here”, and that was always my response, “they don’t always make a sound when they choke, Watch Her”.

My daughter and Son-In-Law live with me and my wife. They have a 6, 3,2 and 1yr old as well. About 3 months ago the 2yr old- who is like MY Shadow- began to choke on a piece of meat my daughter had cut up for her. I had told her the pieces were too large but she told me I was being a Hovering Papa. They noticed she was having troubles but didn’t know what to do. I was coming down the stairs as I heard the sounds of fear turn into terror and I ran down the rest of the way to see my little grand daughter struggling to breathe and see her arms start to flail. I ran to her and, Thank GOD, was able to help her dislodge a considerably good size piece of meat and see it fly out of her mouth. It was the scariest moment of my 56 years but was so greatful that I (1) knew what to do and (2) Employ the method properly. My grand daughter and I are closer than ever now and she’s truly a Blessing to have in our lives.

Years ago I saw my dad use this technique on my nephew that had a coin in his throat. Playing with it in his mouth and accidentally swallowed it. Luckily my pops knew exactly what to do and I asked him how did you know that was the correct thing to do. He said I learned it in a first aid class. (It stayed with me for years.) Yesterday I had to use it on my 4 yr old son. As he had a hot dog sliced as she showed in video not to have em sliced and I used this technique. Fortunately my mother realized what was happening before my son could panick and when he was about to panick I was in position and had him over my knee and hitting his back. Luckily its came out on the first few hits. In hindsight the what ifs is my head really terrify me, but I thank God for the outcome. The whole family gonna watch this video and we're going to practice because you never know.

Love that she goes into details about the things to watch out for and how to cut foods, as a Daycare provider I always recommend parents learn infant and toddler CPR. And not only that but develop safety habits...buckling kids into seats and not just sitting there because a table attachment is in front of them, if you have an infant always put soft things or Ideally mats, on the floor with them if they're learning to balance and sitting up. When they're learning to walk, walk behind them just incase they fall backwards or forwards, always do quick checks when they fall or even at night to make sure older children's wounds are healing properly and that they aren't picking at them....I want my kids to be safe at home and in daycare all the time.

Thank you so much for this video. To the prevention, I'd add: when it comes to grapes, another danger is the skin it can cover the airways same as the leaf. that's why you should always peel fruits until your child has all his teeth to deal with it. Children can choke with objects which are big as the tip of their little finger.

After watching this video i had the courage to start and everything went on fine. You always here mums saying that they did it and their babies never chocked. Good for them but mine did. It was stuck in his throat and wouldn’t go out. I immediately turned him and tap on the back (like mentioned in the video) and everything came out. It actually happened twice. Since then, I gave my baby purée. But I want to thank you very much for this video! It saved my baby’s life. God bless you and the work of your hands!

I know this is not to do with choking, but I read a heartbreaking story by a couple who shared how their child died while they were visiting friends. Their toddler was wandering in the child proof house and drowned in the toilet. When a toddler leans over a toilet and falls in, their are arms are trapped. Shook me!! Never had a bathroom door open afterwards in any house I was in. So kind of them to share this info in their grief. Apparently, it is not uncommon. Can also happen with a pail of water.

My sister, who's a physio, used the above five firm back blows on her 2.5 year old toddler choking on a carrot which was very effective: the key is to remain calm, and carry out the procedure as shown. But as pointed out in the video on prevention, we should have been more careful in allowing the toddler to playfully take cooked, circular carrot slices from our plates!

Choking is terrifying. I choked on partially chewed beef 10 years ago, and thankfully I was eating with a colleague with whom I had taken a 1st aid course. As soon as I realized what was going on I got up, looked at him and mimicked the Heimlich manœuvrer on myself and he understood immediately, performed the manœuvre and cleared my airway. I really don't recommend the experience to anyone. Ever since those very scary few seconds I take my time chewing and I everything I eat, and I always cut my kid's food to a manageable size and make sure he doesn't put too much in his mouth. This knowledge should be mandatory for everyone and certainly to everyone working with small children in nurseries and schools.

My kid was born with a congenital heart defect and at two months old went blue and was unresponsive…I was a nanny for years before I had kids and learned infant cpr….I did cpr on a two month old…which was terrifying. She started breathing and the ambulance showed up right as she was breathing. I think every parent should know choking, cpr, first aid….those classes saved her life…she’s been through a lot including open heart surgery…but without that cpr class she wouldn’t have lived past that day.

As an AHA CPR instructor and NREMT, these techniques are taught a little differently that how I learned and teach them but are close enough. One thing the video failed to discuss was what to do if the attempt to dislodge the item fails and the child goes unresponsive. You'll learn that if you take an AHA CPR course. I have dealt with two choking people in my day... one was my son when he was about 2 or 3 and the other was my mom. Strange that as an EMT I have only dealt with family. Anyway I was untrained when it was my son but I knew to flip him over and give him backblows. Thankfully, the toy popped out. My mom was on the phone with 911 and they emptied the fire house when they heard it was a child. The engine responded first with a full crew, then the ambulance and I think a chief's car also responded. With my mom, I was trained at the time and we were out to lunch and she started choking on some pizza. I did the Heimlich on her in the middle of the restaurant and got her to expel the food. I told her that since I saved her life, we were even for her giving me life :) Both instances were extremely mentally stressful after the fact so you need to be prepared for that. It's a different ballgame when it is someone you love versus a stranger but the key is being trained and prepare. As I mentioned above, I would highly encourage everyone to take an AHA Heartsaver course with the AED and first aid for adults, children and infants. CPR is one of the best things that you can learn and really can make the difference between life and death for a loved one or even a stranger at the grocery store. I became an EMT not to do for a career but initially to be trained in what to do should an emergency happen. I wanted to be able to act instead of standing idly by without a clue when someone was injured or in distress. I decided to take it to the next level and volunteer with my local fire department doing 911 response as a firefighter/EMT. I'm also considering becoming a paramedic to take my training to the next level. Writing software during the day pays the bills but helping people in need feeds the soul. Get trained... you won't regret it.

Thank you for your comments. The techniques do differ as we follow the ANZCOR guidelines- Australian Resuscitation council - here is the guideline- www.nzrc.org.nz/assets/Guidelines/BLS/ANZCOR-Guideline-4-Airway-Jan16.pdf In video we say if your child is unconscious you must commence DRSABCD (CPR). Well done for being proactive about being trained, if only everyone would do it!

@@sarahs3988 I have never personally used one although I have seen some videos. If you have it and train with it then great... anything that can help is a good thing. However, I caution people against relying on devices to perform skills that can be done without a device since these sort of events happen when you don't have quick access to the device. If you can help someone who is choking without a device then you are ALWAYS prepared!! For example, the AHA class teaches students to sit while helping an infant who is choking but I teach my students to do it from a wide stance since you don't know you'll have a chair to sit on or not so be prepared when once isn't present. Perhaps that is the Boy Scout in me :)

*Avoid Circular/Spherical shapes when cutting food portions. Cut into quarters or random shapes, avoid shapes that can easily block child's airway. ((Even leaves can block a child's airway)). *Encourage strong coughing when air blockage is suspected, if cough is strong continue, shortness of breath/inability to cough, proceed to: *Position A) Lay baby on stomach in your lap, rear end higher than the head, give stern pats to center of back between shoulder blades with palm of hand, sharp concise strikes, if this doesn't work continue to; *Lay baby on back in your lap, and give firm presses to the hard breast bone area of child, using palm of hand faced forward. Continue to rotate between this position and Position A until airway becomes unobstructed. If this routine does not work, call 911 immediately. *These are my own Notes, feel free to use. I memorize information better when I read it.*

The thing I love best here, is she starts with the prevention part. Chop grapes longways so they cannot lodge in the throat and watch what is lying around the house because young children will often put things in their mouth. EAT AT A TABLE, not running around. And avoid popcorn and nuts for younger children and babies. Chop sausages and carrots into batons as opposed to the round shape when you slice through. Do not leave your child alone when he/she is eating. Eating socially at a table is not only better for your child, it is safer.

I didn't felt like I was choking, but anyway my mum did everything to help me. She always was attentive, so that time it helped too. May no one will have to get such experience and may all children will be safe🤗❤️

Thank you for the well put together video. Quick question why don’t you compress the stomach in babies for Heimlich? Does the chest compression break sternum or breast bone?

The heimlich (or abdominal thrusts) carry risk of damaging the baby's internal organs. It is extremely unlikely you will cause any damage to the breast bone doing chest thrusts. :)
