My wife just surprised me with a 2013 Softail Deluxe for my birthday with intention of doing a Cholo style build. Just ordered DNA wheels a couple of days ago and this is making me think about changing my back wheel order. If the extra 2 inches helps with lean angle, I'm in. Awesome bike! Love it! I can't wait until mine is finished!
That's one hell of a birthday present. The 18 helps with a number of things including the lean angle. And the way the game has evolved an 18 rear is pretty much the new standard for a full build, and soon I think 23's will take over as the standard for the front.
It's personal preference, especially on the road king. You can run up to an 18x4.25 with a 150 tire. I just ordered my second set of wheels for my road king and for the second time I ordered it with the 18 rear. Not sure if the frame is smaller on an '01, I know they made a swingarm change. You could always do an 18 with the vee rubber lower profile tire for the extra clearance. But as long as you set up your suspension for the type of look and riding style you do, then you shouldn't have any problems. Maybe the occasional fender rub on the most extreme bumps.
I normally skip right over the ads, but I let yours play out. Anyway to pay it fwd for producing this content for us, I’m on it. This is how you RU-vid.. And yes, this series has motivated my build to now mirror the Cholo style you have educated us on. Big ups to you and your film crew, John.
It’s cool that people of all backgrounds appreciate the Chicano culture and style. I’m from SoCal and style is second to none there. You’re bike is badass, I’ll give it up to you brother, it’s nice!
I love the colors black and white, the white walls, the fat spokes cut like that the sun will make them bling! I am gonna get 2021 Road King do the same way I can't wait! I was gonna get a softail, but i need a touring frame for long travel with the wife. I am gonna keep my dyna for now to run around town, but when I get to building the King, you can't love two bikes ones got to go! lol
Think I’ve just found my new favourite H-D channel!! Love the viclas, got a club style Softail myself but very much like to have a deluxe as a second bike. 😍
I have done the 2” in the rear and the 39” Samson’s. I scrap in every turn! I’ll be doing the 18” rear now! Thanks! Oh and I have the 21” dna on the front and love it! You have some of the best info for real life on a Cholo!
J.E.T. FILM yeah you make it easy to watch. Great quality and great content. Love your bike too. Hope one day soon mine is as nice as yours. Keep up the great work!
Thanks, what you see in the videos is 3 years progress of mods and re-do's/failures/parts that didn't fit-etc. But little by little it comes together, and it still isn't finished.
Just found your channel while looking up some cams for my Blackline (go figure that I end up here by that search). Anyways, I have been in the market for an older road king to Cholo out, and damnit, now you have motivated me to start spending some cash again... LOL, anyways, thanks for also adding in where you got things from, they have came in handy already for things like my brake lines, Grips and wheels. Already ordered all three for the Black line (Not Cholo, but for this build the links you have supplied have been beneficial, but will also help when the Road King comes this spring). Keep the content coming and keep up the work!!!
Love and Respect to you Carnal!!!!! But remember the proper and real name of these bikes are called VICLA's. This style surged from the RAZA, AKA Mexican Community of East Los Angeles, Ca. which is identical to the lifestyle of the Lowriders. They are meant to have horses when you need the punch and have style to cruise the BLVD. and represent just like lowriders. The term "VICLA" originates from Spanish words "Bicicleta" or in Mexican slang, "Vicicleta", which means Bicycle! "CHOLO" is the rider not the bike and is slang for gangster. CHOLO's are the creators of this style not the actual bike. Great Video, anyways....... So what's your experience with a 23" in the front and why did not choose to go 23"? With lower profile tires, they fit without modifications . Performance is almost the same except you need to watch out more for pot holes...even though you already do that with 21's LOL! Cheers! CARNAL!!
Great look. I am going to do 18 on my deluxe soon, but as I find out the 18inch wheel and tyre will lift the ride height only 10mm if I go with stock shock. The tyre wall on 18 is shorter than 16 inch tyre, that the reason that the lift is just 10mm. Thanks for your video
Man I can’t wait to cholo my Road King, I been watching these videos for a couple weeks now and my money is burning a hole in my pocket 🤣 I can’t wait to drop it on the bike!
Nice sled, I stayed with a 16" in the rear on my 97' FLSTC, reason is I thought it would require more modifications for fitment. I dig it either way...
Thats a nice looking bike. I never like new stuff but thats a great looking ride. But its still not a panhead! Then again you got electric start and I gotta wrench on mine a bit.
Did you move the wiring harness to the corner of the rear fender? I got air ride on my fatboy lo and not even slammed my tire tore up the wiring. I put it in the corner zip tied to the strut bracket. Solved the issue. RAD cholo dude. Well done.
In this film I hadn't touched the harness yet. Transfered the harness when I replaced the rear fender but I ran it in the same place as the original design, which runs along the top corner of the fender. Haven't had a problem so far. You may have had a one off incident. A rock stuck in the tread followed by a hard bump and it may have caught the harness enough to tear it up
I ended up going with a 16 for the rear but the valve stem is really close to a spoke and I can't find an adapter thin enough to add more air. Any ideas?
I wish I saw this a month ago when I ordered my 21/16s! Lol I guess I’ll soon have a 16 for sale... waiting another month for them to make my 18 is gonna kill me. Great video!
I know u should have both wheels matching but I have a 2010 street glide with air ride and wonder if I should get the back or just the front…..since u won’t see the rim a lot
Get the back as well. You'll be glad you did, because other builders look for stuff like that. And once somebody notices at a meet, they always feel the need to tell everyone. Besides, getting the rear means that you can choose the size and possibly lighten the weight.
J, what sizes tyres (proper spelling 😅) did you put on the 16" & 21" looking for a nice wide profile for rear and something to compliment the 2.5 width on the front. Cheers Andy
@@JETFILMCHANNEL gives me something to work from though, I kinda regretted going with the 16 rear but at the same time we have things called speed bumps in the UK, so not going down the lowering option as it would just bottom out more so with crazy samson pipes, well the plan is to stick stock however plans change 🤣
Oh, I know all about changing plans. But, I also know about speeds bumps/potholes. In NY we get 0-100 degrees throughout the year, and it takes its toll on the roads
The DNA's definitely aren't the cheapest fat spoked wheel out there. Anything cheaper than DNA seems to be pure garbage though. I bought some products from Ride wright which were poorly made junk, and they're one of the most expensive brands of fat spoke wheels, so it's a crapshoot. DNA makes great wheels, and that's a fact. Their customer service needs work, and I wish their wheels were lighter
Hey man nice bike & video ! Just wondering how many inch I need to cut the pvc spacer if I want to lower front fork by using drop in lowering kit such progressive 2" drop in kit ? Thanks
Great question, I added 3/4 of an inch using the c-clips which lowered it 1/2 of an inch. Thats without load, I believe that progressive counts for sag in order to get the full 2 inch drop. But since there is more pre-load with further lowering it won't sag as much. So if you're looking for an additional inch drop then you might need to add a 1 1/4 inch spacer. But I wouldn't recommend dropping it that much. Try 3/4 and see how you like it.
I emailed the company that I purchased the pipes from. They took care of everything, had the mid pipe at my front door a few days later. Samson warranties their products, so the middle-man company's pass the complaints to Samson and samson just replaces the part. No questions asked. I guess its a well documented issue
Hi, are you american guys allowed to put the tyre size you desire on your bikes without the need to produce paperwork for the authorities? Here in Italy we are not allowed to change the 16" size. :-(
@@JETFILMCHANNEL Here in Italy every car/Motorbike has an official document printed by the authorities that reports all its characteristics (bore, tyre size, hadlebar lenght, exhaust tipe and many more). When the police stops you for a check, they will first ask for that document so they can control if you changed something on the bike/car. If so, its a PITA. Even worse if you eventually will have an accident, in that case if you replace something, the insurance will not pay, so you will have big big troubles.
Ugh, I'm sorry to hear that. Too much government control. However, I'm sure we have a lot of stupid laws for other things that other countries are more free about.
@@JETFILMCHANNEL ok thanks man, I ordered the same wheels as yours and want to make sure I don’t need anything else. I saw on the road king you needed shorter pulley bolts. was this the case with your deluxe? I’m doing an 07 classic
It will be the same thing. Spoke to a DNA rep and he said all their mammoth Fat Spoke wheels have shallower pulley threads than stock Harley wheels. I recommend the ARP pulley bolts, they're stronger than grade 8.
@@JETFILMCHANNEL did you have any issues with the wheels not being centered win the fenders? having a heck of an issue with dna, they sent the wheels and tires without the rotors, they put the wrong wheel bearings in my front wheel and I had to cut about a quarter inch off my front right spacer to center the front enough so the caliper can mount to the fork. I only noticed the rear offset after it was mounted. both wheels sat too far to the left.
Diamond texture? You mean twisted spokes... however I've watched alot of your videos, for the most part your spot on, and your bike is dope as shit, however not sure if you know this, what you refer to as cholo this and cholo that etc, "that's cholo" cholo is highly derogatory to Hispanics, I get the "cholo" or gangster look and the slang. Just giving you a heads up, how you use that word might get the wrong people offended, I'll speak for many of my friends, someone someday might might cross them the wrong way... however keep up the good work and vids, and you def have a eye for detail.
Great video and bike looking cool as shit. I am actually installing my new king spoke fat spoke wheels by Ultima today 21" and 16" rear onto my 2004 Heritage and can't wait. Maybe I should have gone with an 18" in the rear but also like the look of the fat white wall as well. But I do have a question. What do you use on the chrome spokes to keep them shiny and protected? Thanks
I've been watching you build your bike and you're doing a real good job filling the bike at the cholo bite that's awesome brother especially for you live at and getting the parts horny somebody like you would do this which is awesome God loves
I just found your channel and I can’t believe the quality and the level of detail you go into! I’m just about to buy new wheels and everything you find out there is for factory looking donut wheels!
Got another question for you brotha. Sorry bout that. Btw thanks for responding to the last one. What size tires are u running on front and rear ? I was told to go with 90/90 in the front but sounds like a very thin tire. Was looking to get your input on that. Out here in Cali I’m having a hard time getting my hands on a tire for an 18” rim😡😂.
Fantastic. Your whole series on how you've set up your cholo softail has been incredibly helpful, so thank you sir! Before you started creating these videos, I couldn't find much on youtube in the way of information/guides for cholo builds. These videos have answered a lot of questions. Can't wait for the next one.
Thanks, that's really awesome to hear. I felt the same way. Most videos were cell phone walk-arounds which offered very little info or reasoning for their decisions. So I thought I'd try to offer that in my films. So far it seems to be very helpful to many, and I'm grateful of those who comment like you did, telling me that I was able to help them.
@@JETFILMCHANNEL SO helpful John. I've been loving these videos. Like you said, nobody was making these about cholo builds. If they are, I can't find them. I'm going to buy a stock 2007 deluxe and give it the whole treatment. It's awesome to have some guidance for this process when you don't live in Southern Cali. Not too mention that the production value of your videos is second to none. REALLY great footage acquisition, editing, post, and audio. So nice to see a professionally produced video. Great work my man. I work in the media industry too, so I recognize great work when I see it.
I left 16 on my bike and slammed it. Looks very cool with my vintage HD solo seat and long fish tails. Springs on the seat makes for a comfortable ride. No wheel scraping problem. Full white walls too. A classic style.
I also have 16 for the classic look front & back. U cant beat the wide whites on both. 21 front just has the tiny stripe. But i like the 21 look too just like both 16s better on my bike
So I bought some rims off a 2013 softtail and trying to slap them on there I couldn’t pass the prize was for a steal was wondering if they would fit on my 05 softtail any advice or ideas or tips anybody 🙏
hello friend, I bought a pair of rims, I can't find tires for the front 21 rear 18 rims Can you help me find the tire size, most importantly the rear tire white wall 2007 harley davidson deluxe flstn
You did not mention the importance of the balance of the bike having the 18” at the rear and 21 “ at the front. Balance at slow speed and at stop where bikes have just drop . The question it’s should both wheels be of the same dimensions for better balance that helps the bike from dropping?
Nah, its cool. Im 5'10 and the bars are 16" with 2" risers. There are other things that affect angle of your arms too, besides bar and riser height. The thickness of the seat, and the suspension in the rear are 2 big factors.

Question about your 21" front wheel.I have a 2005 Wide Glide (carb'd). I installed an Avon Cobra Chrome 80/90-21 front tire. I notice the front tire loses tire pressure. Like 2 psi in a month, not riding the bike. The stock rear 150-16" tire, doesn't seem to lose any tire pressure whatsoever. U Is this common with skinny 21"tires? Just find it unusual.
It's not necessarily limited to skinny tires. All tires can be affected. My Road King tires lose about 2psi/week, and my softail stays pretty constant. Best guess is slight variations in manufacturing process/foreign material/wheel imperfections/imperfect mounting/not enough tire sealant/leaky spoke. Could be anything, but I wouldn't worry about 2psi/ month, that's less than most bikes I come across.
Looking to Adding mammoth 21x3.5 and 18x5.5 on my Dyna Fat Bob. I can only mimick a cholo as much as I can on a Dyna. Specially a fat Bob. But I’m thinking the spokes, apes, and maybe V&H big radius chrome exhaust
18/21 is probably the most aesthetic combo. Just keep the widths reasonable. 90-120 on the front, and 150-200 on the rear. And if you really want to go carve instead of cruise, drop down to a 19 on the front and it'll still look pretty damn good. If you want a big wheel, try not to go past 23 for several reasons. EDIT: So what you were talking about with the white wall thickness made me think about how 16 vs 18 relates to the front, and particularly how older bikes were handled back "before" they had low profile tires. And what I realized was 16/19 has the same stagger as 18/21. So theoretically you could go with a 16/19 setup and higher profile tires, get TWO fat white walls, lighter wheels, and an overall softer ride since the extra sidewall provides more cushion. Just poorer steering feel and turn-in, I guess. At least that's how it works on cars.
Hey what’s up man .. I live in Cali and I’m thinking of getting DNA with diamond spokes but a lot of people are saying that DNA rims are made in china and everything else on them.. and that they are cheap quality .. just wanted to know how long ago you got your if maybe they were bad then but now they are good... just don’t want to spend my hard working money on something that’s not worth buying..?pls help and what do you think..
Great video bro!! I have a street glide on air, 26" wheel, 9down/14back comp killer bags. Scraping definitely at cool on custom painted bags! Lol I want to build a cholo so freakin bad for more of a "daily" bike.
Lived in Cali all my life; home of the Harley Vicla. They are useless in our canyons but they’re great at 25mph down Whittier Blvd. or parked in front of a bar. I’m not hating, just been around them all my life. The 18” rear wheel improves the lean angle but lowered bikes ride like hell; had one. The Dyna is the way to go if you ride hard and love canyon riding.
To my knowledge it doesn't. I won't pretend to know all models/years with or without cush, but what I can tell you is that using a drive belt (like most harleys have) will eliminate the need for a cush. My '13 softail does not have it, so I would bet yours doesn't either
Dope H-D Vicla & video! You pointed out some great info as well! Oh & the music you use in the background is the icing on the cake! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅🏍🏍🏍
