I once worked in a Japanese company that manufacture ceramic capacitors as a production supervisor. Capacitors that rated at 250V AC were subjected to alternate flash tests at 2.1KV AC and 3KV DC. Any defects in the dielectric ceramic disc would go up in smoke and binned.

@@TrevorsBench The disc was painted both sides with silver paste. The silver paste came from Japan and it was placed into a kind of cylinderical ceramic conditioner with acetone and many marbles that needed to be "rolled" on a machine for 48 hours before it can be used, subjected to passing the viscosity test. The painted disc would be send to an 800 deg C oven to "bake" off all the impurities. The shiny surfaces on both sides were the plates for soldering the wire connectors. That was almost 50 years ago. Not sure if the production methods had changed now.

Hi again, I'm glad I take beta blockers as I leaped out my skin when that first cap went pop. Not long ago I restored a beast of a theatre amp, a Sherwood Newcastle Rds 925. Was a big job! The main power filter caps I got were from china (a store with good rep and score) and they are jccon. They don't seem fake and they don't rattle! And they are working fantastic. If I crank it up, give it some stress, you think those caps will leave a crater where the amp was? They are (I think) 16k at either 50 or 63v. I forget! Too much solder fumes 😁

Excellent explanation! I noticed that you made the capacitance and ESR measurements with the frequency of 1kHz. At this frequency the capacitance value tends to drop and the ESR as well. In the datasheets of the capacitors, the values accepted in 20% + or - are measured and defined in 120Hz. How did you define whether the ESR was high or low, if the generic tables are not based on scientific measurements, but on an average, and are expressed by measurements made at 100kHz. It really is a somewhat confusing area, and likewise, it demonstrated the poor quality of these Chinese capacitors, and the risk of using them in circuits, especially with high working voltages. Regards!
@pa4tim
@pa4tim 10 месяцев назад
I agree with most but Impedance is given at 100 kHz, hat is not the same as ESR but the reactance is very low so it is kinda the ESR. But there is no wear limit given. The parameter of importance is tan d (also known as D or DF) This is given for 100 or 120 Hz. Normally is stated that twice the tan d is the "dead" limit. While measuring he quickly showed D and that was in the 0,6 at 1kHz, that will be around 0,06 at 100 Hz and that is not super bad. (for a normal 85 degrees cap what this probably is in real). Other parameter is the max ripple current, longlivity, ESL, DC leakage etc. But people can not complain, they do care about the specs. The seller does not have datasheets or specs so you are stupid if you buy them.If you care about certain specs, buy caps from a brand that have a datasheet and then check them against that datasheet. Not via some of those made up ESR lists that float over the internet often made by people who have no clue and use a DIY ESR meter at 100 kHz that measures impedance instead of ESR.

@proxxonpd250e2 10 месяцев назад
@@pa4tim Fantastic placement! On my channel, I made several videos using professional measurement equipment, such as an LCR Bridge, and with a very accurate DC current meter. remembering that the parameters read, and the decision whether they are within the manufacturer's acceptable parameters, depends 100% on the specific datasheet for that capacitor, which in most cases, only reference brands have them in detail. Some parameters read can already give you an idea of the quality and decision to change the capacitors, already having some practical experience. On my channel the content is in Portuguese, but it is possible to activate subtitles with automatic translation. If you can follow along and give your opinions, it will be of great help. Regards

From my own experience, if you want a cheap but good capacitor, go with Hitano! I've been using them a lot, even the 85C rated ones, and they always seen to have good ESR, capacitance and low leakage (Vloss). Teapo, ChengX, Jamicon, CapXon are also reasonable for low frequency, but wouldn't last on high frequency smps.

If you buy components just for the fun of blowing them up, this make is perfect! Funny how cheap capacitors give you less capacitance and more resistance. The X in Chong X probably means reject or preblown. The marking 16v should probably be 6v or worse 1.6v. Reminds me of buying cheap batteries which were stamped 2500mAh but in reality were 250mAh. In those 2 years of my last comment i had about 4 chongx capacitors exploding on me even though I changed to the exact same voltage as the old one. Other china caps though I've never had any problems with.

I bought 2 6800uf 50v capacitors of this same brand (Chongx) for a vintage subwoofer amp. After seeing this, I didnt use them and I bought the original brand that it had in it. Thanks for this video. Ill never buy these again. They are about half the size as the original so i knew something was amiss when i saw them. The capacitance was 6100uf when i tested them on my Fluke 12 meter. My original caps read better than these cheap new ones by Chongx. GARBAGE! They were like $5 on ebay new. Do you think 6100uf is below tolerance for a 6800uf cap? If so I can return them at least for a refund.
@TortureBot
@TortureBot Год назад
5440uF is 20% under. 6120uF is 10% under spec. What is the tolerance on those?

Wurth Electeonics capacitors are rebadged Chinese Teapo capacitors if I remember correctly. So not necessarily because they are made in China they are bad.
@schaltnetzteil495

Teapo's aren't that bad, but still no quality caps. I'd say they are somewhere in the middle.

NOTE the capacitors may contain an corrosive chemical Exploding them will release it into the air. All capacitor brands can have a failure. During the capacitor shortage in early 2000 even the quality company made some bad batches. They should recall and destroy any questionable batches but some companies may let the workers take them. Digi Key is not immune to bad parts. There purchase quantity may allow them to buy from the factories direct and avoid the bad middle man out to make a buck or yen. Digi Key is a distributor not a manufacture. Ali express ebay and Amazon are not manufacture they are electronic store front . Your Apple phone is a cheap" made in china" phone with a US mark up.

It had sat for a few yrs but still new in package the 2 transistors were rusted out just installed new ones hooked it up to a 12v lantern battery blew the chong capacitor 25v on negative side. I guess I won't replace it with another Chong after seeing this lol

Do you think these were knockoffs of genuine Chongx caps, or are all Chongx caps like this? I just bought some caps from Amazon under the brand Bojax, but the labels on the caps say Chongx. I have no idea what the relationship is between these two brands. After watching this video, I'm suddenly not sure whether to go forward with a repair. If you can answer these questions for me, I'd be very grateful.
@TrevorsBench
@TrevorsBench 4 года назад
Not sure what to tell you. They could be ok or not, testing them, if you can, will give you some sense if they will work. I think the caps I bought are either fakes or factory rejects that should have been destroyed & not sold. Chongx caps are not regarded as high quality like Rubycon, Nichicon, Elna and so on. Lots of Chongx capacitors were used in Chinese built equipment and are still working today. On the other hand, I've seen lots of broken gear because of these caps failing. I always recommend sticking with a quality brand for caps otherwise it may come back to bite you again
@rfdave3980
@rfdave3980 3 года назад
Yes I think these are factory rejects. The china people can buy them or get them free resell on ebay or etc... I only buy from Digikey or Mouser. I too have spend alot of time wondering why my circuit didn't work. No more china parts for me. Those caps you have I would throw out. Get them out of my shack. Not worthy.

I bought some smd aluminium capacitors and they where meant to be 470uf but instead they are only 427uf
@TrevorsBench
@TrevorsBench 4 года назад
That's fairly typical. Aluminum caps usually have a tolerance of 20% and those are probably just fine for new caps. It's when the capacitance changes drastically and no longer does the job it's supposed to do we consider it failed. There are no 'precision' aluminum caps available because they rely on an electrolyte to work

Everybody knows the voltage in China is different than other parts of the world. Oh and I heard that positive is - and negative is +. Ok, they are most likely just “regrade for alternate use” caps from capacitor assembly line testing.

I always buy Japanese brand capacitors from a reputable website. Only once I bought Chinese capacitors and noticed it was crap, never again. Why would you buy such cheap crap? Buy a good, but little more expensive brand and in the end you're better off. And no I'm not Japanese as my name here says, but Belgian, my girlfriend is Japanese.

@TrevorsBench
@TrevorsBench 2 года назад
Capacitors don't blow up unless they're stressed with high ripple current or run at over voltage. Maybe your capacitors failed because of excess heat or maybe a poor design power supply. Replacing them with quality caps will fix the problem but it may re-occur again if the power supply is a poor design and the stress continues. Quality caps = longer life. Poor quality caps = fails sooner Lots of good brands out there, even some Chinese ones are decent Rubycon, Nichicon, Elna, Panasonic, Kemet to name a few
