This video is aimed at pure mathematicians, right? I can't explain the intensity of functional programming and particularly haskell otherwise. Not that I'd argue against it being good to expand your probelm solving views and perspectives by learning some functional programming. Even C++ is getting more and more functional style support. Lambdas, algorithms, ranges, pipelining, pattern matching etc. Because it's just useful.

what's your opinion on f# for stats type of work? Is it worth using over python? what about ML?

I don't have extensive experience with F#, but my gut reaction is no. python is absolutely cracked for data science/machine learning because it's what most of the practitioners use. As a result, you get very good tooling, and most ML libraries are built with python users in mind.
