Correction to the video: When I mention gross weight, what I really mean is curb weight. My gross weight numbers are larger than curb weight (duh) which means you would definitely be overcompensating for the winch if you used my numbers (not a bad thing!). So google the curb weight for your vehicle if you want exact numbers.
A good way to get a cheap sleeve (free) for a winch rope is to visit a local fire station and ask for a worn out fire hose. With that, you can cut a section of hose and slide it over the winch line to protect it from abrasions.
I chose to mount a warn 12000 pound winch on my gladiator rubicon. I mostly use my vehicle for daily driver usage : hauling firewood, garbage, lumber etc. I also pull logs out of the forest to a cleared area to buck into blocks. We have a significant winter up here in central Alaska.
Warranty and price sold me on SB over Badlands. SB comes with 5yr/lifetime vs badlands 90 days or you can buy a pricey 1 year warranty. Warn was to rich for my blood as I will probably be a weekend warrior.
Oh that is good to know. I have always been a take my chances kind of guy with products. Haha sometimes the warranty seems so expensive its not worth paying 20% of the product. I kind of figured they would have a longer manufacturer defect warranty on the HF Badlands winch. Maybe not. Good point though!
I got an warn m12000 on the front and a removable trailer hitch warn m8000 on my Jeep tj, both cable more durable the m12000 is over kill but the extra weight is nice to have on the front bumper
Let me tell you're wrong. The Gross Weight is a weight that must never be exceeded; those increasing weights you are adding (bigger tires, slides, winch, belly armor, steel bumpers) MUST be added to the Curb Weight because they stay with the rig. The difference with the Gross Wight gives you the available payload.... as passengers and driver, water, extra fuel, recovery gear, tools: I'm afraid you have a misconception about Gross Weight. Therefor, if your rig version has a GW of 6300 pounds you are not allowed to exceed that weight. Your Curb Weight is 4700 pounds, more or less, so that your payload is 1600 pounds, and all your extra weight and passengers must not exceed those 1600 punds.
Thank you for the correction! I see what you are saying. I’ll pin a comment correcting that. Thanks! However, its always safe to assume the Gross Vehicle weight. If the winch can pull the gross vehicle weight then it can pull it in any safe weight scenario granted there isn’t crazy resistance due to a specific scenarios of being stuck.
@@OverlandEngineer Let me add that in case of a long recovery, without the help of a pulley (mechanical advantage), you must consider not just the GWR of your own vehicle but the GWR of the other vehicles trailing with you. My vehicle's GWR is 5950 pounds, but my mates rigs are about 7000 pounds, so this last numbers (7000) are the ones I'll have to keep in mind for my 150% calculations for the winch.
any truck less than a 3/4 ton. can easily get away with a warn 8274. or one of the newer 9-10 K winches. pending how heavy duty you need to go. 3/4 ton light weight is a 10 ton and up winch but no matter what get the BEST extras you can buy. .sell a body part as needed. never settle for lesser junk.
