Choosing and Fitting a Violin Shoulder Rest

In this tutorial, I discuss how to choose the right shoulder rest for you, and I will demonstrate how to fit a shoulder rest, using my very own brand new Bon Musica shoulder rest, straight from the box.
Recommended violin shoulder rest brands by neck length (distance from shoulder to chin) - check your size before you buy - musicfunbooks....
Not sure about your neck length? It's a tricky question to answer as there's no official guide. You should also consider other dimensions of the shoulders to find the perfect fit and go to a violin shop if you can and have a professional fit you. It really is a case of trial and error but hopefully you have some idea of your neck length in comparison to other people, so can take a good guess. I find length to be the best guide if you can't get to a shop to try some out.

Please note that the Korfker is not mentioned in this video. I have not tried it yet, but I want one. I hear they are worth every penny. I imagine they don't sell smaller sizes as I couldn't find them. I've also heard they are highly adjustable so should suit ANY neck length. As soon as I have one, I will review it.

I also have read that the KorfkerRest mentioned in the 'Long Neck' section can be used on a short leg setting. These are expensive so I wouldn't recommend taking the risk if your neck is really short.
NO SHOULDER REST? Try using one of these products to make that work for you. A bit of friction between the violin and the shoulder will stop the slipping.

I use the Bonmusica and have for some years after using the Kun and many others. I'd probably go for the pirastro korfker but I'm not independently wealthy so I make do with the Bonmusica which does a very good job anyways. Should the Korfker come down by about 75% (it's 834.00 Australian) I might consider it but now it's prohibitive, I imagine for you as well. Even professional orchestral players (I know of three friends who are and feel this way) find the cost over the top and that says something. All round good video and showing off of the Bonmusica which is the best for the $$ that I've found thus far.

Did you know you can swivel the top of the bonmusica using only one of the two screws and nuts underneath? You don't need both to secure it. With one, you loosen it a bit, then swivel it until you find where it fits better over shoulder and tighten it. All those holes for you to try the best length and also swivel. It took me 4 years to figure it out, and now it's worth the money.

As I unboxed my Bon Musica rest I was thinking I paid how much for a piece of metal and foam! 🤣🤣 It does fit ok though and does the job.

Very nice video. But what are the measurements of short, medium and long necks? Also, I have been thinking of a cover or something for my chinrest to prevent slipping. What do you recommend?

Hey, please see the updated description for this video under the short neck section to find a chinrest cover. Neck length measurements are hard to gauge without looking at the person though. Most people suit the medium ones so maybe start there if you aren't sure with a budget option and see how it fits.

@@theviolincoach oh alright! I know someone who sells the recording of his playing and I was wondering about his music studio. He said,"no music studio. I recorded it all in my bathroom!" I thought you would have similar reason. Interesting!
