I love how people in the fitness industry are realizing that psychological factors are so much more important in the long lifting game than very specific microscopic facts. Especially when the person starting in the game isn't balls to wall passionate about it. I realized this as a physiotherapist, people generally respond a lot better to treatment plans that have a low implementation threshold and are tied to existing routines and old habits etc. than super optimized jedi warrior therapeutic exercise programs.

Hmmm I feel like it’s about the same still but the complicated Jedi ways always claim faster results and generally sounds better on the surface so people gravitate to it more

Water, fiber-dense foods, micronutrient-dense foods, lean protein, an adequate probiotic intake, enough carbs and healthy fats to fill out the rest of the diet for an appropriate overall calorie intake.

there is nothing beyond epidemiology that says there is any benefit to fibre in the diet. A single RCT done on fibre on 64 people with bowel conditions like IBS, constipation etc saw a dose response to fibre. In this RCT the participants were divided into high, moderate, low and zero fibre diets. High fibre diets are resulted in increase of symptoms or no change, moderate fibre diets either resulted in some minor resolution or no change. Low fibre diets resulted in some resolution or in some cases complete resolution and Zero fibre diets resulted in complete resolution for all participants. A 6 month follow up can done and found most participants continued with a low fibre diet and had no return of issues. Those who had higher fibre diets or returned to higher fibre diets had no further resolution or they had return of past issues. Any what on earth do you mean by 'healthy' fats if you are eating lean protein?

Good information, as always. Just wanted to remind about the starches for the healthy carbs (potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams) and LEGUMES for a mix of carbs and proteins, with tofu and tempeh for proteins and fats. As for primarily fat sources, also don't forget seeds: pumpkin, hemp, chia and flax are the ones that come to my mind first.

You cut down on fats, carbs and sugars BUT you continue consuming a high amount of protein. In this scenario in which you have completely stopped weight lifting, will you lose fat or will you lose muscle? Love this guy! A friend of mine that is a personal trainer referred me to Dr. Mike. Everything Dr. Mike says makes complete sense to me and is very helpful! I am so overweight and have been training/working out for 5 years now and I have hit a plateau. I know my problem is diet and it's so overwhelming to figure out how to eat and what to eat. Dr. Mike breaks it all down bit by bit. I remember my first trainer told me to cut the junk food a little bit, not all at once, or you will fail. He told me about another client he had that would drink about a 12 pack of regular soda per day. He advised his client to start by cutting it down to 8 cans, and then gradually decrease. Dr. Mike reminds me of that trainer's advice. I feel relief to know Dr. Mike's videos are here to help me on my way to fitness and leanness!

Hi, I just discovered your channel! I started going to the gym after the covid lockdown was lifted. I was always afraid of look into healthy eating, fearing starvation and deprivation. I used to track calories when I was running two years ago and it was awful, I was hungry all the time. I used to jokingly say that I was running more in order to eat more, the sad truth being that it was actually true. For some time now I've been naturally gravitating to healthy foods because stuff changes in your mid 30s. I'm relieved to hear you saying I should not be hungry nor I should not feel deprived. Looking forward for the rest of the seires! For the past few weeks I've had made squeaky clean eating choices but I need my daily 20g of chocolate... and my afternoon beer :D Is that bad? Can one successfully do weight lifting and drink a beer a day? I'm 35F by the way.

It's highly processed, which means it's bad for chemophobes and other quacks and primitivists. It's not as good as, say, olive oil. It came on the scene as a wonder oil, with a top-rate marketing/publicity industry campaign, at precisely the time when the public fad was to be completely paranoid about saturated fats and obsess over the saturated/unsaturated distinction. Canola, by a narrow margin, is the fat with the "best" such ratio. Now we know the hype was silly but Canola has already taken over and has stayed there from inertia. I never use the stuff. But it's not super unhealthy, just for example not particularly rich in monounsaturated fats.

Fat is the bodies preferred fuel source for all daily activity , carbs are for red blood cells , explosive muscular activity , etc , The body must be metabolically flexible, fat being primary fuel source for regular daily living , carbs for high end muscular activity

TL:DR Mono unsaturated is pretty much down as being the best to eat lots of, however saturated fat is most likely better for you than eating a load of omega-6 polyunsaturated fats e.g. peanut oil. Omega 3 is great for heart health all round, doesn't really effect LDL:HDL too much though, its more to do with tissue quality and inflammation. Mike is THE GUY when it comes to muscle science, his nutrition science? Ehhhh, good enough for most people 👌😁 (Disclaimer, I eat ALOT of saturated fat so I have a vested intrest in saturated fat being good 😉 20% fat beef mince for the win... I hope 🤞) Oh, and there's literally dozens of these kinds of studies and papers and reviews I could cite, I just pulled 2 at random(ish). How's this? "Not only has the condemnation of saturated fats led to an increased consumption of carbohydrates, it has also led to several dietary guidelines recommending replacement of saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats, without specifying which polyunsaturated fatty acid (ie, Ω-3 vs Ω-6). The recommendation for increasing polyunsaturated fat stems from pooled analyses of data looking at increasing Ω-3 and Ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids.19 ,20 However, a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials showed that replacing a combination of trans-fats and saturated fats with Ω-6 polyunsaturated fats (without simultaneously increasing Ω-3 fatty acids) leads to an increased risk of death.21 These results were corroborated when data were recovered from the Sydney Diet Heart Study and included in an updated meta-analysis.22 Other human trials, not included in the aforementioned meta-analysis, include the Anti-Coronary Club trial, which showed that more people died (overall (26 vs 6) and due to coronary heart disease (8 vs 0)) when saturated fat was replaced with polyunsatured fat.23 The National Diet Heart Trial, a randomised, double-blind study, also showed a higher number of cardiovascular events (n=4) on a diet that was high in the polyunsaturated(P)/saturated(S) fat ratio (2 : 1), than on a diet high in saturated fat (n=1, P/S=0.4).24 Thus, advice to replace saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats (ie, Ω-6) may increase the risk of coronary heart disease, cardiovascular events, death due to coronary heart disease and overall mortality.21-24" - openheart.bmj.com/content/1/1/e000032 ~ Changes in total saturated fatty acids as well as myristic and palmitic acids were also inversely associated with changes in HL activity (P < 0.05). With the high-fat diet only, variation in dietary total saturated fatty acid intake was inversely correlated (P < 0.01) with concentrations of small, dense LDL of Sf 0-5. This correlation was significant specifically for myristic acid (P < 0.001). Stearic acid (18:0), monounsaturates, and polyunsaturates showed no significant associations with lipoprotein concentrations. These data indicate that a high saturated fat intake (especially 14:0 and 16:0) is associated with increased concentrations of larger, cholesterol-enriched LDL and this occurs in association with decreased HL activity. - pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9583838/ (The full text is available through the link, top right corner.) If reading this stuff is a bit too heavy I'll summarize. Basically yes, saturated fat will raise LDL but there are different types of LDL. The smaller one is the one that coats your tubes, the larger one isn't as good as HDL but isn't too bad either. The science is still on going and they recognise that certain genetic traits may impact this. However switching out saturated fat for omega 6 polyunsaturated fats isn't a good idea. Omega 3 is fine but you don't really want to be cooking with that stuff 😁, mono unsaturated fat is probably the best out there for large consumption BUT thats not to say that saturated fat is bad (in any quantity), particularly if it is high in myristic (14:0) and palmitic (16:0) acids (beef fat for example is about 60% saturated, 40% monounsaturated. The saturated part of beef fat is about 50% palmitic (good) 5%ish myrisitc (the best) and 45% Stearic (18:0 neutral). Again though, the science is still being done on all of this. Its a BIG subject with so much variance in people's genetics, fat source, life style's, all round diet, weight ect ect

Oh, and in the interest of fairness, a paper that states the opposite in regards to certain things. - www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5475232/ This one seems to conclude that omega-6s in exchange for saturated fat is a good move... but then, scroll down to the bottom and see who funded it. Take from that what you will. It IS heavy with citations through out though. I love this stuff 😁 its like philosophy, just seems to go round in circles forever haha .... 🤔 I need to get some blood work done!

Appreciate the content doc but seems monounsaturated and PUFAs instead of saturated fat? Are you sure about that?

Pretty sure "veggies, fruits, whole grains" is just a loose generalization and legumes are included.

What about Ghee for cooking? I love the taste of my eggs when fried in Ghee. Always thought this was healthy.
