Flags and spinners was a good idea I had not thought about. Great Video!

Thanks! It definitely seems to help when we mow in front of the hives since they’re already used to the near constant movement.

Great stuff. Thank you very much for that video. Not half an hour long like others and hit the exact topic I was looking for. And I learned several things I would have done wrong: Putting bees in the shade (thinking it helps keep them cool in summer), not making any landmarks or differences in beehives and thinking I needed very large boxes and frames.

@@RascalApiary I am so new at this that I can learn from whatever you present.... But an interesting topic might be “Interpreting what happens on the landing board.” I don’t yet know enough about bee behavior to know if what I am seeing on the landing board is normal ... or should be a reason for concern. Issues like: are they doing a dress rehearsal for swarming or are they doing orientation, is this robbing or are they just very active, is the fanning that they are doing normal, how much pollen should they be bringing in, are they active enough or should I be concerned, is all the grooming that they are doing to each other a good thing or a sign of mites, etc. Just a thought... Thanks again and keep the videos coming...

@@donaldlippert6374 I really like that idea! I might be able to cook up something over the winter but I think I'll keep it in mind during spring and get some very specific film of different observations.

Nice. I have 2 hives next to a tree line that get a little shade in the morning. Should I move them out some to were they get full sunlight? The Hives did great this year.
@RascalApiary
@RascalApiary 3 года назад
I'd say if they did great. Leave them. We have been moving ours to full sun to correct for issues like small hive beetles. If you don't have issues keep them where they are. Don't fix it if it ain't broke :)

@@RascalApiary I heard it is best to move your hives in the winter. Is that true? My horizontal hive is in my tool shed and it was the only one to get a couple of small hive beetles this year.
@RascalApiary
@RascalApiary 3 года назад
Youp don't want to break up the cluster. If you can move the hive without a lot of jerking movements you should be fine. I typically would wait for a warmer day and move them. They say move during winter because they will reorient better since they're not in and out of the hive everyday. Thus negating the three feet or three mile rule. However, the colony stays warm by clustering, if you break the cluster apart they'll lose their regulated heat and more bees will die before the return to a cluster. It's a risk but if you're careful you can minimize loss.

I thought about to have a wooden wall least 1meter before the the entrance as they fly very fadt out and in 35km/hour and if theres a road with people ke walking its not so nice neither fir the bees or the walking people to do that impact. If thwre us a hight wall the bees quickly kearn to go up first and theres no oroblem.

I have a wood line with water /ditch behind my backyard. (15-ft) I have sheds on each side with a pool in the middle of the yard. I was thinking of putting a hive in the middle of the yard at the back fence line due to max south sun. Would this be good place as its a little further to the pool then the ditch? Other places in the yard get reduced sun due to the sheds or fence.
@RascalApiary

Sounds like a good plan. If the ditch has little muddy shores it's perfect!
