It's actually like this. Quality 40 pound mono catches 400+lb fish if the human at one end of the line knows what to do. If not , it's in the 4 to 400+ range .And Australian company 'Platypus ' makes the best mono I've EVER used ' Pulse' is the name of the variety.

Anything is possible but that's a bit ambitious in our opinion.

Thanks Ali. Are you still doing your own windons? If so, what hollow do you stick the 300# floro in and do you use nub knots? saludos
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 4 года назад
Yes. I have to make my own. I don't trust anyone else! I got some Jerry Brown 300 and I've been using that to make the loops and serves. Works great.

Did you guys ever fish 15 for the bluefin and yft last November/October? I was on the searcher and the fish only bit that
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 4 года назад
Yeah. We never really go below 20#. We'd rather have a few less bites and a higher landing percentage.

Hey I live in central California and was looking at a Penn fathom 25n or Penn Fathom 25 level wind for rockcod fishing between 200 and 300 feet deep. I don’t know which to get.
@carter7371

I’ve tried both the primary difference between the two is casting so if that’s not important go to the lw just makes for a simpler action.

A PENN Fathom 40NLD with 80# braid and a 60-100# rod is hard to beat. Good luck!

I see that in a lot of your videos you use a blue camo line, does matter the color line you use? I was thinking of using a yellow line but I'm not sure if it would make the fishes bite less. I am targeting yellowtail.
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 3 года назад
We've never noticed any difference in colored line. We like the Seaguar Threadlock because it casts so nice. We load our casting reels with 80# and it casts like a dream. Normally we'd use 65# but the 80# has more "body" and jumps off the spool.

When using a flat fall for those 150lb+ bluefin what are you using for a top shot while have 130lb braid?
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 4 года назад
We have a few rigs but usually 80-130# floro leader that's about 30' long. Hope it helps.
@hkor21hendrix
@hkor21hendrix 4 года назад
@@LocalKnowledge is there any reason you would do that long of a leader as opposed to a 6' topshot?
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 4 года назад
@@hkor21hendrix Little more stretch and we can quickly cut and die on a new hook or lure.

what leader do you recomend i should use for catfish with a rod/reel with a line class of 33lb
@osunoob9928
@osunoob9928 2 года назад
and with 40lb braid
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 2 года назад
It would depend on the size of the fish. 40# leader woudl do the trick I'd imagine.

Is there a rule of thumb for braid vs leader lb streagth ? Does the braid always have to be at least twice as strong as the leader, or can it be less ?
@mlenz2553
@mlenz2553 4 года назад
My preference is to go triple the max drag of the reel, for the braid. Then I dial the drag in(with a scale) based on the leader.
@TheJwhollis
@TheJwhollis 4 года назад
Hey Kevin, IMHO only, find myself using the same lb. rated braid & mono for my wind-on leaders. i.e.- 40 hollow core braid to 40 lb fluoro leader. Have two full binders with nothing but wind on leaders. 20-20,30-30,40-40 up to 200-200. But then I'm able to mix any size mainline with a simple loop to loop connection on end of a Bimini twist with any selected wind-on.
@carter7371
@carter7371 4 года назад
Personally it doesn’t matter I try and give myself a decent amount of difference so if anything breaks in an unfortunate event it isn’t 50 some yards of braid but rather the top shot. For example when casting iron or lures I like to fish 65lb braid to a 40lb topshot or if I’m fishing lighter 50lb braid to 20-30lb topshot.
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 4 года назад
Not really. MOst of our smaller casting gear has either 65 or 80# braid on it and we connect everything from 20# to 80# to it. The leader is really dictated by what you're trying to catch. The braid is plenty strong and not really a concern.

@lachlanoneil8938

What's the point in using 50 lb braid with anything less than 50 lb leader , usually I use 80+lb leader with 50 lb , I even use pe2 braid with 80 lb all the time in areas where I can play the fish without a huge risk of snagging , the thicker leader is purely for abrasions from the fishes mouth,tail in that scenario
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 3 года назад
You really need your own fishing show bro. You clearly know everything about fishing. We use 20# Fluoro with 65# braid all the time to coax a bite from finicky fish. But you keep those hits coming.
@lachlanoneil8938
@lachlanoneil8938 3 года назад
@@LocalKnowledge I'm commercially fishing ATM, in the great barrier Reef catching coral trout (grouper) with handlines 20+ a day out of a small dory by my self. You can use 20 lb leader with 65 lb braid but it's not optimal at all, if you had infinite setups 10lb braid would be about right for 20lb mono leader, not to say 65 lb will not catch fish because it will no problems at all unless you wish to cast really far or drag on the line is important in another way , example drift fishing or jigging deep.
@TheCuban1040
@TheCuban1040 4 года назад
On the kite, since all the line is out of water, why not fish straight braid with no leader? Seems like the rigged hooks with 300lb flouro would provide all the abrasion resistance you would need.
@LocalKnowledge
@LocalKnowledge 4 года назад
Couple reasons. We need a little bit of stretch. Helps with pulled hooks. If the fish gets tail or body wrapped it can break braid. We also will leader bigger, stubborn fish at the end of the battle to control them. You can't do that with just braid.
