Choosing the right size boat. Is a 19 ft boat too small?

Choosing the right size boat for your needs. I take my 19 foot boat out on the chesapeake bay on a calm day to show you what it's like. Taking a small boat offshore or into rough waters is a potentially dangerous situation. If you're boating on larger bodies of water like the great lakes, bays or larger rivers with heavy traffic, having the right size boat makes the trip safer and more enjoyable.
Going offshore in an 18 foot, 19 foot, or 17 foot boat can be done, but you're much more susceptible to the waves and wakes from larger vessels. It is more dangerous to be in large bodies of water with a smaller boat.

I appreciated this video for a diffrent reason to many. I have been around small boats most of my life and the small movements in calm waters or even being aware of water coming over the transom! You just respond to these situations. But it is so easy to forget that these are not normal situations to your passengers. So, Thanks

I boat in exactly the same area as you do - the mouth of the Magothy river. My boat is kept at the mouth of Deep Creek. It is an 18 ft Bayliner. I am a new boater, just got my boat last May. I have not yet mastered enough courage to go out on the bay. I mostly go out the north, up to the beginning of the river. I figure I will get enough skill - and courage - to go out on the bay by next year. Since I see the same area in your videos, it has been a great source of information, for me. Thanks for these videos.

I'm not sure about what people are referring to when they judge sea worthiness by length. If you're saying "all things being equal " bigger boats are better ok, pretty basic concept but no one ever says that they just say bigger is better. It has a lot to do with the hull design. There are 30ft plus that are great for taking the family out on the lake for the weekend but have no business in rough conditions, and 17 footers that can handle 6ft with a moderate chop. There are a million things going on but here are some basics. A hull with a significant V rides in the water rather than on the water. A little more power to plane and a little slower but what you lose in speed is not worth mentioning compared to gain in stability. You want a fast rising bow. That refers to buoyancy. The more displacement the faster it rises after plowing into a wave. Wider gives better stability side to side but a rougher ride going into the sea or hitting a wave. Self bailing decks are nice but multiple high output bilge pumps can come in handy. Those are just basics find out what different designs are for and then just look at your boat. Last but certainly not least is experience. If you're new to boating, the ocean is not a good place to start. Would you want to learn how to drive in NYC or Houston? Course not. Baby steps. Leave your ego at home. It can get you into trouble. Just because you saw someone else do it doesn't mean you can do it. Know your limits, the boats limits . If you're thinking " gee, I don't know about this ", head for the dock. Listen to your instincts not some half lit moron going "come on you can do it ". It has (like many things ) an inherent risk but so does going 80 on the freeway and it's too much fun to pass up. Find someone with experience to take along. Shelve the ego. Watch, listen, if they say better let me take it, move over. Be safe, have fun.

It depends on the hull design and also the transom height older boat from 70s and 80 had very low transoms even offshore boats had low transoms like the Makos and sea crafts. Also know as sink crafts

It should be stated that hull shape (deep-V vs flat-bottom) and weight of the boat are important additional factors which affect the harshness of the ride.

I take my 17 foot sea kayak in water I'd never take my 26 foot cabin cruiser. The cabin cruiser could sink and it is not designed to roll up. You have to watch the weather in both.

have you ever been to the bay in wildwood nj or cape may / jersey shore? I've been taking my 16' aluminum boat out from nj across the river to c&d canal and it seems ok mostly but can get hairy with winds and other boat wakes on high traffic days. Would a 16-18' bowrider be ok in the river, nj shore bays, and c&d canal areas?
@WayneTheBoatGuy

I have not been over there in a boat but over on this side (the Chesapeake Bay), many people suggest having at least a 24 ft boat because they can handle the chop much better.

I can rattle a 19' boat to pieces in the bay! Especially as you get to Baltimore Harbor. The cargo ships in the bay displace massive water, displacement that will change the natural current/ wake. You can feel it as you enter the south river the most in small 19' vs a +23' vessel. But we are talking about a 19' $5k boat vs +23' +$15-20k boat!......I just made the trip from south river up to the inner harbor, after ego alley in a 19' hurricane because of friends schedules.(I am sore and will def be using the 19' vhull or if my friends give me a heads up, the 23' sunesta next time I go out!)

Our 23.5 bowrider always did much better in the bay than this 19 footer.

I live in the same area as you I am look at a 19' center console. That should be good for our waters?
@WayneTheBoatGuy
@WayneTheBoatGuy 3 года назад
It really depends on if you're planning to be in the bay most of the time, and how often you would like to go out. On calmer days a 19 ft. boat is fine, but most people who spend the majority of their time in the bay prefer to have a 24 ft boat.

My mooring limits me to 19ft. I fish the inshore waters of Massachusetts in the bay. I want something that on the right days I can head out to what might qualify is offshore. What would you recommend in the way of a used 19 ft center console for near offshore boating. You have a good day and thank you
@WayneTheBoatGuy
@WayneTheBoatGuy 3 года назад
If you're limited to 19 ft, on the right day you could happily be out in open waters in most any 19 ft. boat as long as you aren't too far offshore if the weather changes. We took our old 19 ft out many times in the bay and there were times where it got a bit more than challenging. I was reading an article about some guys fishing in rough waters on lake Erie in a Ranger 620V (which is 20 ft) - ideally it would be good to see what people are using locally that's within your requirements. I would think I'd want a boat that sits a little taller in the water with a deep V hull versus a skiff if you're going to be offshore.

@@WayneTheBoatGuy We don't do flats or bayboats here. New England waters are just to angry unless your crazy which I do tend to be. I need something with high gunnels and a deep V to get me out to the tuna. I've got a few ideas but I'm sure not up for spending the Benjamins to get a Grady 180 fisherman so right now I'm trying to find a 19ft Robalo. Not many used boats out there with this pandemic. I'm probably going to drive to Florida with the truck and pull something north. What to do. What to do.

Would rather be in a Boston Whaler 150 (15"5" ) Montauk than any 19 ' aluminum, be it welded or rivetted, just the bang & crash of aluminum will make you wish you had teeth protectors. Also you have to know how to run in "off" conditions. Anyway, aluminum is fine for calmer days. Just be aware of conditions, especially the upcoming forecast if your moving off-shore. Cheers

My 19 ft was fiberglass and it really handled the bay decently, but it was not a pleasant experience for my passengers when it got choppy out there. My newer 23.5 boat is much more 'bay friendly'

I seen a 12 ft hand made boat with two 5hp motors bring a load of Cubans 90 miles to Key west using 2 liter soda bottles for fuel tanks. I am going to run my Mako Pro 19 Skiff 70 miles one way from Key West to Ft Jefferson in may of 2026. Just to be safe I am going go about 30 minutes ahead of the "Yankee Freedom" (takes tourists daily to Ft Jefferson). I have all the safety equipment (Compass, Simrad, Hand held GPS, EPIRB etc). Why you ask? Because its there.

Tossed around? FFS it as flat as a sh!t Carter’s hat, man. 🙄 What do people get into when a cruise liner sinks, to save their life? A small boat - often not much bigger than 19ft. Not everyone on the planet owns a super duty that will tow a 24ft boat. I’ve sold my 25ft charter boat and looking to buy something around 18 or 19ft that the wife & I can handle alone. Who wants to take out a 2nd mortgage to fuel up a 25ft boat? 🙄 You lost me at 2 minutes in. 👎
@WayneTheBoatGuy
@WayneTheBoatGuy 3 года назад
Sorry to hear that. My experiences have been different because my wife and I didn't grow up boating, so when it's a 'little choppy' we really notice it. My wife and other passengers have enjoyed the ride of our 23.5 ft boat much better than the 19 ft boat which ironically uses about the same amount of fuel as our 19 ft boat did!
