Thank you Joy for this video. I went with one of your recommendations which was the Thomastik Superflexible strings for my violin :) . As somebody who is working towards the intermediate level, it was also my first time in changing the strings (surprisingly it wasn’t that difficult for me). I was actually hesitant to buy Thomastik strings (after watching several RU-vid videos) and was going to opt for Pirastro instead, because I had Pirastro Tonica on all of my four strings when I bought my violin a few months ago. I do have Warchal Amber for the E string now though. Regardless, I love the tone and the level of resonance of the Superflexible strings as I did notice a significant difference. 🙂

Put Vision Solos on today! They have the perfect bright zing that compliments my darker sounding violin (they were a birthday gift). However, I will experiment with a different E String. The E string is a little bit too abrasive in terms of sound and feel. I saw a lot of reviews and I think I'm gonna go for a Pirastro Gold Label E String.

I learned a lot from your tutorial channel. Thanks so much I'm starting with a $50 violin, and I understand that in addition to good expertise, a good instrument will also play a part in training. Can you give me some advice on choosing the best bundled equipment in the $1500-$2000 price range? I really want to know violin brands that are famous for sound quality. Unfortunately I can not give you specific brand names, as in my opinion even the violins with the exact same brand name are the same price, they can sound quite different. Each instrument reacts differently with strings. Also each violinist has their own preferred tone colour. Your ears should be the best judge for choosing the right strings. Sometimes getting a help from a trained professional violinist can be helpful as well.

Tanks for your videos Joy, How often do you change your strings? How long the infeld blue lasts?
@JoyLeeViolin
@JoyLeeViolin 2 года назад
You're most welcome Lucas. Knowing when to change strings all depends how much you play . When the strings are bad, they sound dull and not resonating, and this would be a good indicator of changing strings. Thomastik strings such as Infeld Blue tend to last relatively long, easily 6 -12 months on average. Happy practising!

@@JoyLeeViolin Hi Joy, thanks for sharing. I just find it harder to press on G strings especially on higher notes. Yes, the cracking sound happen because it has no sound, so I press harder to create sound. May I know Is this an issue for the violin setup or strings?
@JoyLeeViolin
@JoyLeeViolin Год назад
Dear Cathy, you can have the action (the distance between the string and the fingerboard) of the G string smaller by a luthier. They can make the groove on the bridge a bit deeper so that the height of the G string is less tall, hence easier for the fingertip. I wish you all the best!

Hi dear! Tnx for this video. I have some question. I always used pirastro chromcor because strings are very expensive in our country and as you know this string is very durable. So what do you suggest to me that sounds more silky and fat but also fast response to bowing and also more durable Because it's very expensive here and I really can't afford to change it less than one year. And also don't have opportunity to try different strings before buying. With regards.

@@JoyLeeViolin Um, I'd be careful with the high tension. On a modern violin, OK, but on an old violin it's not always a good idea. Hard tension pulls hard - and some strings even in medium tension already pull a lot (too much sometimes) - and on these instruments it can cause damage. It is often better to keep the classic medium tension. P.S. : Sorry if my English is not fully correct, it is not my native language. :)

Hello Joy 💕 This is Yasmine from Kuwait. Thank you always for your very useful videos! I have two questions: 1) How often should I change my violin strings? 2) I have some trouble with my very stiff left hand grip, and my left thumb tends grip on to the violin, which can be quite painful during my practice. What exercise do you recommend that helps with loosening the left thumb grip on the violin? Thank you! 💕
@JoyLeeViolin
@JoyLeeViolin 5 лет назад
You're most welcome Yasmine. Thanks as well! Here are my answers. 1) it depends on the strings, but when a string is old, its sounds becomes dull and sometimes it can't stay on the same pitch. This could be a good indication. 2) Simply try to move the thumb away from the neck of the violin during playing can help us to release the tension of the left thumb. This can be difficult to do at first, but with repetitions you will see that you can move the left thumb which means you've leaned to relax the thumb. Happy practicing!
