Squash rackets are like fashion - what one person loves, another person hates. There is no perfect racket for a particular standard or style of player.
Don't buy an alloy racket if you can avoid it and don't buy the top of the range either.
Confused about what sort of racket you should start playing squash with?
Don't be - it's not too complicated. Learn which head shape is most suitable for beginners, along with advice about weight, balance, strings and grips.

What was your experience with your first racket?
@russell.bishop

A decade old hand-me-down from my Dad. It was terrible but I didn't know that!

That might make an interesting video - how old can you go before you hate a racket?

Thank you so much for showing me what to look for in Squash Rockets as a beginner. Can you also please share what shoes are good for beginners? I am a small woman with narrow feet.

You are most welcome. Unfortunately, I can't give you specific advice about which shoes to buy as I no longer follow the market. I have made a video about squash shoes, but it gives general advice rather than brand recommendations.

I know this is a very off topic question, but what would you recommend for tennis elbow? Should i stop playing while the elbow is still aching?
@BetterSquash
@BetterSquash 2 года назад
Firstly, I am not a doctor or have any medical training, but sometimes tennis Elbow is caused or at least made worse by a grip that is the wrong size; often too large, so check that is not the case for you. Secondly, some people have a brace/strap that goes around their forearm that seems to help. Have you tried something like that? Lastly, in all cases like this I recommend visiting a professional medical practitioner if it is possible. Injuries left untreated can cause long term issues.

@@BetterSquash Thank you very much for the response, coach! I do use a bit of an unusual rather large grip for badminton but in my many years playing the game never had any issues. Everything started with squash about 2 months ago. I did try an elbow sleeve and the pain diminished but the bigger pain relieve came from ice packs. I’m planning to start playing with a sleeve and a strap from now on and see how that goes. If the pain persists I will most definitely follow your advise and go visit a doctor. Keep up the great job, coach! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

@@BetterSquash I forgot to mention I started playing with a 210g TELOON, badminton grip tape on top of the original tape that doesn’t feel too large for my hand size. Maybe the racket is to heavy for a beginner?
@BetterSquash
@BetterSquash 2 года назад
That is quite heavy, yes. Also, what works for badminton, might not be suitable for squash. For example, with such lighter rackets, you can "flick" your wrist more, but with squash, the heavier racket could injure your wrist.

My first one was a borrowed one from the friend who introduced me to the game. A month in, mostly to save their spare racket, I bought a £25 150 gram from Sportsdirect. I called it 'The cast iron'. It ended up with more of its paint on the wall then on the racket itself. But it took it like a champ! A year in I've got a 110gram little cutie and I love it! I think the most important investment is the shoes. I started in a running shoes, which was horrible for the job. So I think after two sessions I just went for a proper squash shoes. THAT was a gamechanger. In that sense, as you mentioned, the rackets are secondary. Go for good shoes and whatever racket. I also have a question for you Coach: how long a ball is useful? After how many hours (roughly) should I replace it?
@BetterSquash
@BetterSquash 4 года назад
Good to hear you borrowed one to begin with. I agree about the shoes, that's why I created the shoe video BEFORE the racket one. With regard to your question about balls, I don't really think a time period is a good guide because it depends on how hard the ball is hit. If it is shiny, then put it in the washing machine at 30c with your clothes and it should come out matt and be able to be used for a bit longer. I would also recommend keeping a new ball in your bag and playing with that every now and again. if you notice a big difference between it and the older ball, recycle the older one (if you can) and start using the newer one.

Thank you very much for posting such a helpful video. If you are to give advice on what exact racket in tear drop shape for beginner. Also between Technifibre xtop 135 (£99) and Karakal 135 (£60) which one would you advice. Since pandemic prices are gone up with all graphite rackets now above £60. Thanks in advance.
@BetterSquash

I don't know those specific rackets, but if you have access to them in a shop for example, go in and close your eyes and hold each one. Which one feels better? I know you mention beginner, but most people have a preference. try to do it, so that you don't know which racket is which when you hold them. If you can't tell any difference, get the cheaper one. The more you play, the more you will learn which racket feels best. That said, for a beginner I would probably recommend the £60 one and use the rest to get good squash shoes.

@@BetterSquash Many thanks for the reply. I will try to find them, only issue is that they don't do it in shop anymore,

Arh, I see. That's a shame. How about seeing if you can find the current versions in the shops? they probably haven't changed much since last year/time.

I tried my friend's Dunlop (140g in weight) and the hit was much, much more solid using it, comparing to my own Revelation 125. But I am not sure if it is due to the string or racket weight.
@BetterSquash
@BetterSquash 3 года назад
It could be the strings or weight, or even the balance. The more rackets you try, the easier and faster it is to understand what you like.

Thanks so much, I have an offer of rox or kougar rackets made of grapfit but I have no Idea whether they are bad or medium quality , any idea about these brands? Price around 70$ btw
@BetterSquash
@BetterSquash 2 года назад
Hello. Rox is a brand I have heard about and they have been around for a long time. I haven't heard of Kougar and couldn't find anything online. Without knowing the models, it is hard for me to say whether the rackets are good. In general though, I recommend staying with the larger brands. Are they available where you live?

Does it feel comfortable when you hold it compared to other rackets? I never recommend buying a racket without holding it first.

Hello, should i buy a expensive racket few years old in sale or should i buy more recent but cheaper one?
@BetterSquash
@BetterSquash 3 года назад
Hi Martin, this is a GREAT question. The simple answer is a more expensive racket from a few years ago that is on sale. Racket technology nowadays doesn't take big jumps, it's small evolutions. So a racket from even 5 years ago can play really well compared to a racket from this season. More importantly, it's better to find the head shape, weight and balance that you like than to simply get an expensive or new racket. I hope that helps.
