"[It is] the most exalted, intense and sublimely powerful of all Chopin's compositions ... It is unbelievable that it lasts only twelve minutes, for it contains the experience of a lifetime." (John Ogdon)
Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52, was composed in 1842 in Paris and Nohant and revised in 1843. The work was dedicated to Baroness Rothschild, wife of Nathaniel de Rothschild, who had invited Chopin to play in her Parisian residence, where she introduced him to the aristocracy and nobility. According to Robert Schumann, this Ballade was inspired by Adam Mickiewicz's poem The Three Budrys, which tells of three brothers sent away by their father to seek treasures, and the story of their return with three Polish brides.
A phrase in the dominant key (marked piano) opens the seven introductory measures and leads into the first subject of sonata-form exposition, a melody with Slavonic coloration. The first theme undergoes four cumulative transformations with decorations, counter-melodies, counterpoint, and a nocturne-like fioritura. The development of the second theme and its intertwining with the first heightens the complexity of the musical structure and builds tension. Through the intertwining and thus the simultaneous development of the two themes, Chopin effectively combines the use of both the sonata form and the variation form. The body of the piece concludes with a series of accented fortissimo chords, followed by a momentary calm of five pianissimo chords. This then suddenly leads into an extremely fast, turbulent coda, written in exuberant counterpoint. Structurally Ballade No. 4 is decidedly intricate.
A distinguishing feature of the fourth Ballade is its contrapuntal nature. Counterpoint is found only sporadically in Ballades Nos. 1 and 2. The fourth Ballade is musically more subtle than the other three, as most of its portions remain melancholic and profound. Although there are some substantial outbursts in the central sections of the music, the coda reveals its greatest momentum.
Of the four Ballades, it is considered by many pianists to be the most difficult, both technically and musically.

I'm a Evgeny Kissin follower....but you my friend have met Chopin face to face in a dream and brought him to us all with this interpretation. Your performance can only sound holier on a concert grand. Thank you for sharing it. 2:38 thru 3:40 wow, no doubt, Chopin cried writing that movement

Dear Vadim : I have been having a love affair with this Ballade all my life. It has been said that it contains every aspect of technique addressed by Chopin in his etudes.It leaves me undone every time I hear it. For me,it is the Mona Lisa of music. This is such a beautifully measured and intrinsically musical performance - one of the finest I have ever heard and will ever likely hear. Thank you so much! What a blessing to the world of the piano you are!

There are passages of great rhythmic sensitivity which I believe gives life to the piece - or the music, the "room".

Wow, how do you manage to play like this, not using your upper body? So much power and expression, and it's all seems to come from the hands. Incredible. And you seem to really use the acoustics of the hall in this and your other recordings very effectively. Thanks for sharing and not rushing this piece and letting us hear the counterpoint nuances. Most performers play this ballade in under 11 minutes, one can't help missing details and the coda is a often a mess (all in all this is not my favourite coda of all times, but it makes sense now).

This one of the most insightful interpretations I've ever heard (and I've heard all the well known pianists' versions). This sounds like a true BALLADE, i.e. a story, and not just a piano show piece. Five stars :).

Wow a very exciting ending! Particularly enjoy your calmness and relaxed pace during the slower sections-- how you had taken time to place the chords and still maintain the intensity-- it makes those moments much more precious than to rush through it by playing fast. The opening waltz is rather slow. But it's a pretty neat idea-- by starting with a slower pace, you can layer the intensity and build up the momentum more gradually. Bravo!!!

I feel that A-flat is the coldest, most distant key. I can also be associated with death: physical or symbolically. That being said, F minor is the relative-minor of A-flat, and since it is harmonically dependent on A-flat major, the "pastoral" quality of the F-note (like green). Therefore, the piece does not say "Death, I can see you," rather, it asks, "Death, where are you taking us?" And will it still be green in that place? Thanks for listening. Remarkable! Splendid :) I found it interesting as you, unlike most of other performers, decided to make certain chords softer, which turned to have a noticeable impact of the interpretation. Enjoyable. And I may say I'm quite disappointed that i hadn't found this video earlier than just now..

I left already a comment, but I woud like to add something more, and say why I had like it so much.I personely dont do this ballade in the same way, but I understood the though, your conception. In spite of the fact you dont respect intirely the legatos in the first section of cantabile, you get a very good results doing it only with the pedal. The tempo of this section, which by the way different of mine, and wich I dont like in many pianists, is in accord whith the conception at the whole.

@raqueldetoledo
@raqueldetoledo 10 лет назад
(cont) The tempo in general is very good balance, and respect a good gestalt. The inner voices are really very good worked and balanced. I could compare for example with Richter, who takes about the same tempo in the first section of cantabile and also at bar 90. He takes a crazy speedy in the other sections, and lost totaly the gestalt, in my point of view. There is any reason to play so fast! Is not musical (in my point of view.).
@DihelsonMendonca
@DihelsonMendonca 13 лет назад
Congratulations. This is one of the first time I can REALLY listen to the melody and passion Chopin wanted to express on the Coda part. Very good and passionate. You could improve it by creating an atmosphere of gradual tension from the beginning of the piece to the final, and stop playing chord notes as arpeggios. More time precision. You are always playing the bottom notes first than the right hand. Please don´t abuse this rerource! All the best

Very good interpretation! Close to my favorite so far (RIchter)... Anyways the very few things i didnt really like were addressed all ready. But its better to play with emotion and freely than on guidelines without emotion. However the best of the best can do both! So keep trying at it and I'm sure you will get a LOT of publicity.

Your interpretation was poised, and very melodic. Excellent work. However, a lot of your intended expression was lost in the fact that you weren't getting full key contact. You fingers were dancing on top of the keys, instead of sinking into them with each stroke. Part of this may be that there wasn't much force being translated from your shoulders and forearms.

A very passionate rendering of one of Chopin's most complex and astounding works. I just wish the piano had been voiced properly and didn't have that annoyingly edgy, ringing tone. It sounds like a toy piano.

What extraordinary beauty! But while his playing has immense lyrical poetry it was deficient in the strong stormy passages. His light touch continued into his strong passage and that's not good, quite odd, actually.

Fred MyOpinion I understand Chopin himself played more like this young man, not a piano pounder like Liszt. Also, the room acoustics and the baby grand aren't as resonant as concert situations. I enjoyed his performance.
