I've just started a music degree as a mature student, from the standpoint of being largely self-taught and with the resultant technical insecurities. I am so grateful for all of your highly accessible, practical content. This is an invaluable aid to my studies. Is it true that these etudes were written by Chopin to address technical problems in his Concerti? Thank you and best wishes from Prague!
@Henri.d.Olivoir
@Henri.d.Olivoir 11 месяцев назад
As a reply to your question, I think perhaps for some extant it is possible. His concerti were written between 1829 and 1830, the same years where most of the Op. 10 études were composed. Some of those études, however, date to the years of 1831 and 1832, meaning that they could not have helped Chopin with technical issues with in concerti. In general, I recommend doing some research on the topic; I do not recall ever hearing this theory, but it could very well be true, I just cannot confirm it

Dear Paul, that’s absolutely wonderful! You put such a huge amount of time into your tutorials. You are a genius who nurtures pianists to overcome fear of certain piano pieces. Your patience and kindness are so valuable. No having hands, knuckles and fingers hit with a ruler if we make a mistake; instead, find and work on hesitations and areas of difficulty, until finally, we get it. Your a marvel.

In scale practice I always imagined four octaves to mean per individual hand! Now i see it's in total, between the hands. Ha, a lifetime of doing it wrong, although no real harm in doing extra octaves 😂

How difficult this etude really is? I'm currently at Henle 3, I really want to know when it's possible for me to learn it. Thank you!!
@gabrie1c
@gabrie1c 2 года назад
@@M419.99 Henle rated this etude as a 7. Of course difficulty is often subjective and varies person to person, but most would consider this etude to be in middle in difficulty compared with his other etudes. I would recommend putting this etude as a long term goal and work up to it after playing a few of his nocturnes/waltz/mazurkas first. Start practicing Gb maj scales/chords/appegios/double thirds regularly and by the time you're ready to tackle this piece the black Keys will be very familiar. And of course if you have a teacher s/he would be your best resource.
@M419.99
@M419.99 2 года назад
@@gabrie1c Thank you for your recommendation, I'm definitely working my way step-by-step to mastering this etude, it's just so interesting and uplifting. Right now I'm learning piano with my jazz teacher, but I also practice classical repertoire on my own to develop my musical understanding. I hope I get there! And best wishes to you!
@gabrie1c
@gabrie1c 2 года назад
@@M419.99 you'll get there eventually if you want it enough. As for me, I'm studying as an amateur now after a long break of many years, so I don't have a teacher anymore and only relying on print or online sources like Paul's awesome lessons here. I often remind myself that it's the musical journey and not the "end goal" that I'm pursuing. This helps me not to rush anything or try to grind any pieces to death that's beyond my capabilities. Hope this is helpful. Best wishes to you too.

Thanks for another great tutorial Paul. I notice you have some strong forearms. I'm wondering if you do/did much manual labor or weight training which contributes to that strength, and what positive or negative effects you may feel that brings to your hand and wrist suppleness and/or finger speed (which is astounding to most of us amateurs). Though you incorporate your whole mechanism (torso, shoulders, arm, etc) there seems to be a lot of emphasis in your technique and tutorials on sheer ability of fingers to fire downwards and then release quickly ("play it slowly with good depth on each note, then gradually increase speed" is the general formula). But in my experience (I can play this piece but not so great and not at your tempo) that is insufficient (for me) and there seems to be a limit to finger-impulse-speed, which, if not developed in youth, is hard to come by as an adult. Hence other approaches to building speed. Also wondering how light or heavy of a piano action you prefer and use. Would LOVE to hear your thoughts on all of the above. Thank you!

As usual, Paul came up with the goods! I am impressed at how you break down the piece into manageable sections, and gradually ratchet up the tempo but first working on the relevant scale: one hand, two hand, same direction, contrary movement, straight scale, arpeggios and broken chords. Well done! Enjoyed all your tutorials of all the difficult pieces. You will enjoy playing Nikolai Kapustin, Alexander Scriabin and Sergei Bortkiewicz. Look forward to your new publications on RU-vid. Paul, keep 'hammering' away the keys! Excellent!
