ProPractice Day 4 of 20: Chopin Prelude No.4 in E minor, Op.28. Check out 5:45 for a weird exercise you've probably never seen before, but one that has helped me out a lot with using natural armweight to produce a rich and subtle sound. You just never stop discovering new ways to play around with this piece, and there's not enough hours outside of work to practice, which is absurdly frustrating

I agree with the idea that it IS a personal piece. Really appreciate you are not only telling people how to play it but also encourage people to have their own understanding.

I really like the idea of making Op 28, No. 4 personal to "you" especially because of how I initially discovered it. My first hearing this was the jazz adaptation by Ramsey Lewis named "Essence of Love." Credit is given to Chopin and the original is named. I'm intrigued to find other persons' treatments of it, including your in-depth concepts such as momentum. One thing I just had to do out of curiosity was to write out the chord symbols of the LH. To me, it's as if Chopin was playing jazz before there was jazz. You can then borrow concepts like voicings changing by only half steps into other performance scenes, and practice scenes too.

I’m struggling with the pedal… to keep it nice and legato… but that’s good… I’ll take it as an etude 😌

Wonderful creative teaching on the spot, more inventing music than delegating it. Improvising improves.

I bought the full video, and there's some great content there. Near the end, you touched on the hairpins briefly, but I would have liked more discussion of the hairpins in the context of the dynamics and other instructions, such stretto and smorzando. For example, what do you think the hairpins mean here?

Hi Josh, do you think it's possible to release the keys only 3/4 of the way on an upright piano? Mine doesn't seem to produce any sound unless I release them all the way.
@dass0137
@dass0137 8 лет назад
Are you pressing them 3/4 of the way instead of releasing 3/4?
@oysteinsoreide4323
@oysteinsoreide4323 7 лет назад
sinophilia How you can do that depends on what type of action the upright piano has. some high end pianos have some neat repetition technology in them, so you might be able to repeat without lifting key all the way up to do the repetition.
