This 76-minute video lesson explores an in-depth look at the Scherzo No.3 in C-sharp minor, Op.39 by Frédéric Chopin. Areas of focus include strategies to reduce tension, building speed and accuracy with octaves, creative methods for rhythm and counting, how to create lighter and more fleeting sound and touch (especially in the slower lyrical sections with the descending fioritura figures), fingering suggestions, pedaling suggestions, interpretation, balance between the melody and accompaniment, variety with melodic shaping (and different expressive ideas for shaping repetitive passages), creating long lines, voicing, artistic approach, structure, and various technique exercises to help you become as efficient as possible in your practice sessions.

This video is so so helpful. If you’ve ever played it, I would also LOVE to see a tutorial on Chopin’s Impromptu Op. 51 No. 3

The first video I ever watched from you was the old octaves video with this piece being used as a demonstration. Nice to see the full piece getting a pro practice

This was so helpful as always Josh, I’ll have to purchase the whole tutorial as soon as I pick this piece up. Are there any etudes that you would suggest knowing before attempting this scherzo?

The Op.25 No.10 would certainly be good training grounds for the octaves, but each of the Etudes has unique challenges that will help you develop holistically as a pianist, so I think you’d benefit from playing any of them

Hi Mr. Josh, do you think it is possible to get this piece competition-worthy in a span of 4 months? This is my reality at the moment and I really need your advice 😭

Should beginner pianst stay away from this piece?

Most definitely, master separate skills with etudes first, I did 25/10 for the octaves and 25/11 for the runs
