I agree with you. For along time they were not even considered "brothers" by the other branches of service. So glad this has changed and shows like this show just what skills and professionalism that is involved. I wanted to be part of the USCG back when younger but at that time it was still male preferred. Glad that has changed over time as well. They are a great group of men and women. 😊

I couldn’t have said it any better. All the first responders are amazing. These Coast Guard guys and gals are straight up impressive. From the mechanics on the birds to the pilots to the stud rescue swimmers. Nothing but respect.

Two years after the fact but I wanted to reply. Bless your heart and soul for entering into the career of EMT in the first place. You will find that your knowledge and skills will serve you and others well throughout your life, even if not in an acting role of EMT. I would not find it surprising to hear that even in the past two years you've been able to help someone even if you wouldn't deem it a 'rescue or rescuscitate' type situation. We lost my niece due to abuse several years ago - abuse at a dayhome. I'm happy to say that the evil so-and-so is locked up for many, many more years. Abuse of anyone, especially a small child, is horrific. When a parent goes to a trusted, vetted daycare/home facility to pick up their child who has been reportedly 'fussy' all day, only to have to rush them to the hospital on the way home from said daycare and have them dead in your arms within 4 hours of that, it leaves you whirling. Thinking that this POS is sitting at home on her sofa with her kids and husband while my neice is dying was infuriating. Of course, initially we had no idea what was happening. Shaking head here. If the Canadian 'system' is so great, how come so many thousands of Canadians come to the US for medical attention?! A socialist healthcare system is a trap - very low quality, I've heard...because, anything the 'gov' manages turns to crap. Just sayin'.

The Coast Guard is expressly prohibited by statute (Title 46 US Code, sec. 2110) from charging a fee for any search and rescue service, so this is not something that is subject to a discretionary waiver.

You really cant do a whole lot in the tight, turbulent and loud conditions inside the helo. The Coast guard helo's are also primarily a search and rescue unit and only have basic life support equipment onboard due to space and weight constraints. A doctor would not be any more useful then a well trained EMT. The focus is to stabilize and transport as quickly as possible to a location where they can receive proper medical attention.

I love watching the UK ambulance services shows. I'm a devotee. However, the Coast Guard is not a voluntary-donation-funded agency with volunteer doctors to join the flights. It is a branch of the military. The Coast Guard airmen/sailors are trained to board ships which are breaking the law, search and rescue, and policing drug smugglers. They are not trained as full fledged corpsmen or paramedics. If they believe a corpsman is necessary, in a given SAR, they bring one with them, but a corpsman has limited licensing vis a vis providing medical care and administering meds. There are not dozens of volunteer doctors available to go on these flights, as this is not a volunteer organization. So, while I understand how it works in the UK, and I think it is wonderful, there is no way that a military agency can provide full medical care on a rescue helicopter. Their goal is to pull the patient out of danger, and keep them alive until they get to the ambulance. Paramedics in the ambulance will provide necessary medical care. And, by the way, the UK Coast Guard has a similar mission: "After recovering any casualty the CRTs will provide the assistance needed then will transfer them to a place of safety. The teams will also provide support to the lifeboats and SAR helicopters per tasking by the Operations Centres."

@@yes2day100 Im sure it's not easy to find qualified doctos to handle such jobs, but transporting this patient in a helicopter with all the noise and limited space without securing the airway first.... that's gambling...

Generally in order to get insurance under a parent and maintain it. He would need to be considered a tax dependent, claimed on parents tax return. Used to be if the dependent also a full time student, such as college. If he was being paid to work on a fish boat he is filing his own taxes and not a dependent. Coast Guard rescue swimmers don't have the autonomy to make those decisions (and probably don't have any anyway)...if I'm not mistaken they might only have very basic EMT training but don't quote me on that.

Lyricallyk I understand the concept there but soft restraints such as gauze fell under the SOP of a Basic EMT and most times a first responder. I reaa a size it’s all about law a a hits but it was to keep the patient from hurting themselves further. Paramedics could use chemical restraints. I was just surprised Basics and first responders couldn’t see them.

@@lauramulhern5981 I have never used gauze as a restraint - the risk to tourniquet is way too high (assuming you're referring to kerlix, etc?) I don't know how military medicine differs from civilian - I was never allowed to apply soft restraints without a physician order, even on the ambulance.

From what I've seen, the coast guard does have access to doctors on serious cases and a dr is available. They also have. korpsman, who has a higher level then a basic EMT. I believe a Paramedic level or Advanced emt. I've seen some episodes where the basic EMT really was not enough, because the maybe the person injured needed pain medicine or higher quality care. These Men and women hands down who rescue and save lives in the coast guard are real Hero's and the pilots. More medical training would be a greater advantage on each rescue though, with some flights 2 hour one-way rescues and back.

@@EmiliaJay When I said soft restraints I was referring to just a plain gauze that you would use to bandage a wound. I would never consider a tourniquet as a restraint. I’ve used this technique many times with a 100% success rate and 0% harm to a patient. I understand SOP’s are different everywhere. Just curious. Not to say one is right and one is wrong. We use a lot of different responses to "thank you". I would say that "you're welcome" is usually used in a more professional instance while "you bet" is more relaxed. I do agree however that it doesn't make much sense. I think the most common answer would be "of course" which means the same thing.

No one is saying nurses and doctors and other medical personnel aren't deserving of credit! Were just recognizing the inherent risks and awesome work that these USCGs do!

Praise is not mutually exclusive. If we were watching a medical show, we would be admiring medical professionals. Here, we are admiring search and rescue workers.
