The thing I love most about this channel is Iron Trap Garage does careful, thoughtful rodding of cars that have sat for years or even decades. And the projects are a great homage to classic rods of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. It's great to make a classic car live again, in whatever form.
I've never really cared for the chopped look in cars, and I had hoped you wouldn't chop such a rare car. On the other hand, the finished product looks better than I anticipated, and your work is good and workmanlike.
Seriously, you nailed it! Chop is perfect and your explanation of the process was fantastic! Love that you added the inner supports. Seen too many where they cut this corner/leave it out. Your attention to detail and fabrication is top notch and why we keep coming back! Me thinks the Merc is getting a haircut next! Go Iron Trap Garage, keep moving forward!
You keep telling everybody that you’re not a expert at this . But you always teach us how to do it the right way. The car is beautiful! That chop is just what it needed! If you’re not an expert at this then I’ve never seen one! 💯
What I love about Matt, he a down to earth expert fabricator. We are all learning whatever age we are. Matt in my book is an artist genius who is not so prideful he can't relate to us regular folks. Keep up the great content!!❤❤
The explanations are always appreciated. There is always more involved and you do a great job in such a short time. The experience you've gained over the years is very obvious. Stay humble my brother!
Great job. Thank you for taking the time to explain the proper welding technique required for such a chop. The net is full of "mig weld mickys ". What's next, as a heavily louvered hood???.
yes! that's so right. and thanks for getting into the whys and hows of things too. makes things more interesting and educational but man i can imagine doing that stainless trim being a nail biter. next up... carson-style lift off top!
The 3” chop worked out vey well. I think that once the top is fitted, it will complete the look that you are after. I like the 40s custom look that you are going for except that I will have to get used to the skirts. I prefer open wheels but, perhaps they will grow on me.😊
In 1954 one of the boys in auto shop sectioned a '38 Ford. He cut and removed the cowl side vents which is about 3 of so inches. It's a straight cut tho the rear, and matching the back is not any problem. By removing horizontal grill fins things match perfectly. A little measuring will show you how. It's something I always dreamed of doing, but never could find a suitable car. Something for you to consider now that you already have the windshield chipped. Make it a full on custom.
Honestly? It looks better now, at first I thought it would look horrible but I was wrong! It's going to look awesome once the glass, windows and top are fitted!
I felt the same way. The windows should still roll up & down, as the angle of the windshield did not change. The convertible top bows will have to be modified, presumably.
Such a better job than the hack the Hiltz shop did on their 37. Yours will see the road, theirs will go to the junk yard. So sad. Keep up the good work on the classics.
Absolutely perfect even if you decide to put a top back on it shouldn't be to hard to get frame to match up because frame attaches to top windshield frame with dowel pins as line up. Love my ragtops in winter & love the open air in summer. Thanks Matt wishes I could weld as good as you. Spring is just around the corner almost cruizing time!
