A sample chop and flip is using pieces of another piece of music to make your own. A classic technique used in a ton of genres. In this video we'll go over some of the ways to make a chop and flip a sample, using the Roland MC 707.

I haven't used my 707 much for sampling tho, just been focusing on the synths lately. Hope you can make more of these series, it gave me a few ideas. I think most people focus on the synth engine when reviewing this unit, instead of showing the sampling capabilities of this device.

Couldn't you use the normalize function on the samples to adjust the volume thus freeing up your MFX send for other stuff? Not in front of my 707 right now to check, but seem to remember this being the case. Glad to see more 707 on the channel! ^^

Or one could go the way of resampling, but that might eat up valuable sample memory if you don't clear the original sample from the project

CHOP! CHOP! Let's get going! Somebody had to do it. And just a quick theory about why the preview is so much louder than what you get on the pads. Since the pads a touch sensitive, they might be quantizing the volume over the touch range of the pad?

Would love to see the steps leading up to this.. where do you get the sounds from, what is your thought process when you are collecting them.. how do you organize them, decide which sounds to pull on to each device (are some better suited for different genres?)

I wonder if the clips are quieter than previews because of velocity mapping?
@Jazzybreaks
@Jazzybreaks 3 года назад
So just to clarify, you CAN manually adjust the start and end points of each chop (like on MPC)?
@healthyhappyhero
@healthyhappyhero 3 года назад
If your into sample chopping check out the MPC one, you can chop samples on the fly as the sample plays by hitting the pads when you want the next chop to start. Mind blowing and easy.

Quick question: how/where do I build a library of (longer) samples? (bits of vinyl -- a bit like the library you use in your video to start with. I would like to build a library of parts of songs (from my vinyls), that later on I can upload into projects to chop/play with. The problem is that I don't know where to start. For example, how do I save these (bits of songs; say, between 10 and 30 seconds, perhaps even longer) so that they belong to a general sample library and not a single project? I know how to record them, but I just don't understand where they end up being saved and how to re-access them. Help super welcomed!

Thoughts on chop-based sampler hardware/software? I tried but could not get into the MPC1000 workflow (even with jjos). MC-707 seems nice, but pricey. Ableton is always an option (but sometimes gives you too many options). I've actually been intrigued a lot by the Serato Studio dealie because it strips so much away to focus on beatmaking and makes arrangement quick.
@safeaim
@safeaim 3 года назад
Gotta say that my favorite workflow for sampling is on the machine. Own both the machine, mc707 and push 2, and I still always end up on the maschine when I wanna play around with samples. You could however get really wild and creative with some LFOs on Ableton sampler/simpler
@safeaim
@safeaim 3 года назад
BTW, with the Maschine+ coming out now you will see alot of cheap maschine mk3's on the market, so might look into that :)

Have you understood how the "scene chains" function works? I did not understand whether it is possible to save a scene as a set of clips and then call them in a chain without specifying the next clip number inside the clip.

Oh damn i didnt even know this machine existed its like an mpc but has synths etc too right ? looks like a pretty easy unit to use as well for sampling/chopping and sequencing. Any major downsides to this unit compared to say an mpc ?
@spookylaundry3326
@spookylaundry3326 3 года назад
This somehow passed me by too but I ended up getting one and am loving it. It's a hybrid of MPC and Electribe workflow, also works great to sequence external gear. They've added a few great features that were missing when it was released.

Is that the only way to fix the quiet factor of this thing? Even all the factory presets are super quite on mine.
@dangerbird64
@dangerbird64 3 года назад
I actually have a question: you said that when slicing you should look for chord changes. Do you mean chord changes within the slice, or one slice would be one chord, and another slice would be a different chord? I realize this might be a dumb question, but i'm going to brave it since i'm sure this won't be on the internet forever.
@RedMeansRecording
@RedMeansRecording 3 года назад
it depends on how you want to play them back and the structure of the thing you're chopping! try both!

Is there an easy way to manually set slice points while playing back the sample? I think im picking one up. I just cant shake the feeling the mpc one is a ‘better value’, just the focus on the screen on that is a big turn-off.

On my DAW it would be called poly as in polyphony, you set to 1 and then 2 can't play simultaneously. Except that would include the whole instrument or sample group, here he seemed to apply it to every one which seems a bit long winded. I know this question is a year old but that's my 2 cents lol
