In this video viewers spend time out in the field with a John Deere 7250 self-propelled forage harvester. This 380 hp machine is working on an Iowa dairy far chopping corn. Watch for a New Holland TG215 tractor moving Badger 1250 forage wagons. An Oliver 1855 tractor and WHITE 125 Workhorse tractor are wrapping the corn silage in bags back at the farm to produce feed. There is lots of corn harvesting and tractor action to watch in this Big Tractor Power video.

Those auto-connect hitches are amazing! Talk about time savers! I am also very impressed that they are using a couple vintage tractors for things they were made for. We see so many farms that have those big new tractors involved in all phases of the work but don't get to see those Olivers, Whites, and all the other tractors that can still do a good job and do it well and they have likely been paid off decades ago. Great video.

Very nice to see your videos of the variety of ways guy's use to get the job done! Been helping a neighboring mega dairy do their corn just incredible the coordination of 3 choppers 14 trucks and 4 push tractors at two locations.

It just amazes me how powerful these harvesters are and seeing how quickly they can demolish an entire corn plant. Great video always.

They are impressive. On the larger sp choppers in the 700-800 hp range that I have filmed they will process 10 tons of corn in 2 minutes.

This was great I remember chopping on the dairy I worked we didn’t use bags everything went in silos even high moisture shell corn funny thing is we never rolled it before putting it in the silo neat to see how it is done today
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 5 лет назад
When I was a kid my neighbor put a cob mix high moister corn up in a silo. They harvested with a John Deere 6600 combine and then the trucks unloaded into their New Holland 1600 Forage Harvester which was hooked to the silo blower pipe. The chopper processed the corn well.

bigtractorpower that would have been great we had a pull type John Deere two row chopper behind a 4650 two wheel drive was only to chop hay and corn think we did it that way to save money not to spend it on more equipment price of milk wasn’t enough to have a lot of nice machines at that time just to put in time line would have been between 1990-1995

Awesome! They were popular with dairy farms in my area, but it also seems most of our dairy farms were hard on equipment. Only so many hours in a day, and the cows take most of them.

The chopper pulling the cart and then the bagging system seems like the better way to harvest silage compared to a cart following along and piling the silage into an open pit.
@bigtractorpower

Wrapping the silage really ensures about zero loss. A bunker allows faster volume in storage and feeding.

Would like to hear about the moisture content percentage of the standing corn stalk at the time of harvest and a description of the corn kernels being chopped (milk stage, dough stage, early dent stage, late dent stage, etc.). Making good corn silage is a matter of timing of the chop. The water content of the silage must go somewhere in those bags as the silage cures over that 60-90 days.

Those quick connect hitches look brilliant. Makes a total pain in the back straightforward and quick, and even adds a super satisfying clacky-sound :) I might have missed it in the video, but how many horsepower does the Kelly-Ryan bagger require to put the chopped corn into the white bag? If I see that right it mostly needs to drive the conveyor from the wagon to the bagger.
@bigtractorpower
@bigtractorpower 5 лет назад
I would saw the 125 hp Work Horse is a good match for the bagger. I normally see 125 to 175 hp tractors on these. It’s allot of volume to load into the bag. Thank you for watching. I agree on the clanky hitch sound. 👍👍

Those Bergman hitches are manual. The part on wagon has a rod at an angle, the chopper has the receiver. When the chopper backs up it connects with the pipe and the hitch on the wagon lifts up and locks in place. They are a great time saver.

It's not often that I get to see a self-propelled chopper like this directly towing the chopper box it is filling. I guess economies of scale have long since dictated the use of open-top trucks and semi trailers. I suppose this model is more suited for the big bagger rather than a silage bunk or pile.
