I ( Rob O'Neill) am a farmer in central Nebraska. I farm along side my father and two brothers. We grow and produce corn and soybeans. I have a passion for farming and the use of technology that makes it more efficient. I hope these videos help farmers connect consumers in what we do on a modern farm. Thanks for watching.

Cheap storage... that's the first time I've ever seen it stockpiled in the field. You're the first guy I've seen give an up-close explanation of what silage is.

Appreciate the video Rob. Thanks. I'm definitely looking forward to getting some shirts and hat from you. We have a John Deere 4755 and a 4440 still. We love them. Workhorses they are for sure. Have a good day.

Looks like the 2020 crop is finishing. Our dryland corn has pollinated and now at blister and showing stress. Yesterday was over 100. August average 3" had no rain yet because the monsoon did not get here . Our irrigated is needing to have 3 weeks of less than our 85 degree in Texas for September. The ears are 11-16 oz now. Hope to have a little heaver when loosing weight at black layer in over 3 weeks. We plant to finish corn the first of October to fill over 60 lbs/ bu.

Yep. Coming to and end. Kinda finishing faster than we like with this heat. Today’s been better. Just could use a rain.

Great video. What a difference from the self propelled forage harvester from the chopper being pulled behind the tractor. Some farmers put it on the ground and some either have a pit, concrete bunkers, and silos for the silage here in Pa. Usually go around all the fields a minimum of 2 rounds that way it helps to open the field, gets rid of the deer along with other animals damaging the stocks, and get rid of the poor growing corn. Hope it is packed good and tight. Are you putting plastic silage film on it? Glad your son is very enthusiastic about farming.

When you put the silage straight on the dirt how thick is the loss with soil bacteria. Isn't there a rotten layer near the ground?

You can always tell the true farm kids from the kids that grow up on the farm. Farm kids wanna be in the middle of everything, planting, tillage, harvest they wanna be involved! The kids that just grow up on a farm are great for the RU-vid audience, they look cute for the occasional appearances...

I can never understand why farm kids that have the opportunity to be involved with tractors etc choose to do play around on skateboards instead, wildhorses would,nt have kept me away from tractors when I was a kid , great to see how excited he was to join his grandad on the old 4955 :)

Rob is there a better smell then silage? You pack it so it seals and then let’s it cure. Give them calves warm cornflakes for breakfast. 👍🏼

Why are you guys putting that in the middle of the field you guys don't have bunks I seen some guys line up their round bales then put that white plastic down then it covers good I'm using the round bales as a bunker but I've never seen anybody put it in the open field like that we don't mind could you explain why you guys do it thank you God bless great videos
@ONeillFamilyFarms
@ONeillFamilyFarms 3 года назад
Yeah, we built our grain bins where they used to pile feed. So this is were they ended up putting there winter feed and then they clean it up every spring. It’s a higher spot that drains decently. They’ve used bales as bunkers before. Guess they don’t see much diff. 🤷🏻‍♂️.
@barbaramaj1919
@barbaramaj1919 3 года назад
I wish they would narrate the process a bit. Like, why are they laying it out instead of putting it in a silo? How long do they let it sit before they bale it? (humor). When do they use it for whiskey? How do you keep the skunks out of the pile? Is this for milk or beef? What is the protein content? What are the positives versus negatives (like overdrying hay or cutting it too long) - are there any? Could be so much more than watching equipment move back and forth...

I have never seen silage being packed in the field before . Why don't they use a bunk or a silage bag?
@ONeillFamilyFarms
@ONeillFamilyFarms 3 года назад
A lot of cow/calf guys around here just put them on drier spots in our area. For small piles I guess it's not worth it. Feedlots are usually the ones that invest in the bunkers.

Good question, it just depends. How damaged the crop is. Also that residue will have nutrient value for next year. Crop insurance reasons could factor. I figure some will, but usually the people that need it only need so much. Plus transportation is more because your taking the whole plant. So there’s a lot of considerations.

Hi great video as usual just a question. You don’t put anything on the ground when it rains doses it get wet from the bottom
@ONeillFamilyFarms
@ONeillFamilyFarms 3 года назад
It's in a decently drained area they don't. Big feedlots will have nice concrete bunkers and tarp it. For us, this works.

Why don’t you use silos for your silage
@ONeillFamilyFarms
@ONeillFamilyFarms 3 года назад
They’re not really used around our area anymore. Speed and convenience. Plus cow/calf operations don’t typically need the grade of feed like a dairy would. It’s kinda sad but harvestores are kind of monuments of history. Some still use I think but they wouldn’t keep up with today’s choppers.

Why don’t you just feed alfalfa, an other good gras hay? Seem like it cost a lot of money to raise a corn crop, an not get full price for it at the coop
@ONeillFamilyFarms
@ONeillFamilyFarms 3 года назад
One of the major uses of corn is for cattle feed. Some is cut for silage, some wet corn is picked and packed, and some picked as dry corn. It all pays the same. Thanks for the question.

Lovely animal welfare standard for those that get TMR with soil in too. BigAg and “cheap Ag” are nothing on high welfare, well invested farming practices.

I hope that is a dry firm spot in that field. Nothing worse than wading through mud and mixing it into the feed. Cattle don,t do well on a mud ration.

Must be crappy corn ,but I don’t understand your operation. It takes a lot of money to plant an grow a crop of corn. You are just grinding it up an dumping it on the ground. Makes No since To me
