Sadly I missed this course. I love playing Chords on Bass a Lot. I am a totally Blind individual and you described the fingers that you used for the Exercises in this video. But you also said to use different Combinations of fingerings in the left hand and not stick to one fingering. And I'm trying that now and I have to say that it is really helping my fretting hand flexibility more than I knew! I have been watching your videos an Vlogs a lot and I love them! Even though I can't see what you are doing, just listening to you is inspiring. And hopefully I could meet you in person and shake your hand. Cheers man! Keep the videos coming!

Man, he's a good instructor. Much of it is difficult to fully grasp without having utter fluency of the language, but he delivers the information in a way that makes it accessible. Well done!

all the chords sound good on bass...there's nothing I dislike about bass...try using those very low harmonizations while playing with a band, they are incredibly musical...don't be afraid, your in for a real eye opener...

Janek, why 5 string with high C and not a 6 string?
@joaomenegalebarbi1586
@joaomenegalebarbi1586 9 лет назад
Juan Carlos Rojas I presume he doesn't need notes any lower than the E, but the high C helps a lot in his soloing. A low B can be troublesome with all the vibration and buzz, so if you don't need it, it's better not to have it
@janekgwizdala
@janekgwizdala 9 лет назад
+Juan Carlos Roja this tuning really helps me play in the range I hear music. I can hold a fantastic supportive groove while at the same time being able to play melodic ideas that can sing out above the music.

how to set E to C, with ordinary string for 5 string? ----- or we must change the string with " c" from 6th bass
@sandcram
@sandcram 6 лет назад
Adrianus Samuel you could just buy a 4 string set and a single High C string, just research the appropriate gauge and which manufacturers sell individual C strings

Kinda confused about the bit around 3:17; aren't the major harmonisation triads : Major, min, min, Maj, Maj, min, diminished (degree 7 , which would become VII-7b5 if it were a 7th chord) ?
@TheBassMan533
@TheBassMan533 7 лет назад
He's referring to what kind of 3rd the bass note has (a major 3rd or a minor 3rd). You are correct in that the 7th degree of a major scale is a min7b5 chord, but you need another note to "clarify" that.

Built chords upon the structure of the Major scale is: I(M) ii(m) iii(m) IV(M) V(M) vi(m).... and here is where I had a problem with it.. vii(diminished) back to I(M). I caught this pretty early on in the video and it troubled me very much so. If one is building a chord off the Major scale, the leading tone chord or vii chord will be a diminished chord. Since the example is in the key of G it would be F# A C. Your example offers a minor for this and it is totally wrong. Forgive me if it's straight forward but not allowing this information slams the door in the face of your students and hindering them of learning of future lessons of secondary chords.
@janekgwizdala
@janekgwizdala 9 лет назад
+Blake cramer When there are only two notes in the chord and the third is minor, the chord is minor. There's no reason at all that the chord on the 7th degree of the scale HAS to be diminished. It can be a multitude of things. In this case, we're looking at two note chords that are simply major or minor. So, there's no slamming the door in anyone's face, only a simple introduction to navigating the instrument and learning the foundation and the basics of chords using a major scale. The 7th degree could be diminished, it could also be a min7th, it could also be a V chord over the 3rd, and so on and so forth. There's absolutely no reason to restrict yourself to one absolute way of approaching the one chord from the 7th. Now THAT would be slamming the door on a number of possibilities by being narrow minded about the possibilities available to you.
@blakecramer6726
@blakecramer6726 9 лет назад
Actually you're wrong bud. IT (vii) HAS to be diminished if you're building off the Major scale. Two note chords? You do know that a chord is a group of THREE OR MORE tones. Two? Note? Chords? WHAT!?!?! I literally can't believe you said that and you're trying to debate me on music! "...looking at two note chords that are simply major and minor." So yes there is slamming the door in everyone's face! You're teaching incorrect stuff and making up the "two note chord" when there's no such thing! Soo.. let's see what we have so far, you're saying a chord built off the vii scale degree is not diminished nor doesn't have to be. And..Lol..two note chords?!?!?! Approaching the vii chord from any major key setting it is always gonna be diminished no matter how you approach it. If you don't understand that something is wrong.. Sure you can have a major or minor 7th chord but it's either a quick substitution /or the key changed in a song.(either of these can be debated because everyone of music knows the vii chord is diminished) You can have things like V/vii° ii/vii° and other secondary chords (which are three or more notes) to construct from the vii scale degree! You obviously don't know music theory. Where did you learn music?
@blakecramer6726
@blakecramer6726 9 лет назад
Oh yea... since you're talking about reharmonization, that is substitution!! How are you gonna teach that if you're not even teaching where theses chords essentially come from!?!
@janekgwizdala
@janekgwizdala 9 лет назад
+Blake cramer I don't know how many ways I can say it, but why are you so stuck on a rule of classical harmony? and why does that have to apply to every situation a major scale is used in? I'm not "building chords" from a major scale, I'm using a major scale as a starting point to create an exercise that encourages people who haven't played chords on a bass before to learn the fundamentals of fingering on the left hand. I'm not teaching a lesson on how to write music in the style of Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven, this is a simple technique lesson for the bass. So before you jump to correct something that isn't even there, I would encourage you to actually look at the video for what it is. A simple introduction to left hand technique, to chords, and to having the fluency in your left hand all over the neck to eventually work on reharmonization techniques. Why would you make it so much more complicated than it needs to be? And you're right, why AM I trying to debate you on music. Especially if you won't actually talk about music and are completely wrapped up in theory. And I would love for you to explain how you determine the quality of a chord beyond major or minor when there are only two notes sounding.
@blakecramer6726
@blakecramer6726 9 лет назад
Okay understandable. The video is strictly techniques on how to utilize chords with the left hand. Deal. I'm not making it complicated at all. That's the problem here. The diminished is such a scary thing to some players because no one will teach on how it's used and where it comes from. I'm wont talk about music? I'm pretty sure that's all I've been doing is talk about music O.o Wrapped up in theory? Yea pretty much. Music theory is the basis of how one plays and comes into bettering him/herself in the performing arts of music. So me talking of music theory tells you I'm not talking about music?? Not sure how you came to that conclusion bud. About chords.. again a chord is a group of 3 or more tones. When you say "two notes" then you're merely discussing intervals (whether molodic or harmonic) and the quality in which comes from that interval which later on helps make chords (which are a group of three or more tones). And since you asked here's your answer. When talking about intervals one must take into account both notes being played. Let's start out with G since this is where you started and we'll use various types of B's. So, G to B is a Major Third, G to B# is and Augmented Third (important to understand that this is B# not C. Once it is labeled C it becomes a prefect fourth.) G to Bb would be a minor third and G to Bbb would be a diminished third. On a serious note though. Allow me to apologize for my rudeness if I came off as such. I sincerely apologize for any uncomfortable feelings or inconveniences I may have caused. I would like to point out that this was intended on being a friendly debate and I feel as if I got too worked up so again I do apologize. Look forward to your response!

I'm sorry but a chord is composed by minimum three notes, and.. if we talk about modern harmony we have to talk about minimum four notes to do a complete and decent chord. Just to clarify . Thanks for the lesson !
@janekgwizdala
@janekgwizdala 9 лет назад
+mauro d I'm afraid you're incorrect with your comments about chords. A chord is anything that is two notes or more. It's doesn't have to contain three notes to be a chord, and modern harmony, or most any other harmony, does not need a minimum of four notes to create a "decent" chord as you put it. In fact, it's very possible to create and improvise compelling and engaging music with just two notes for long periods of time. So, just to clarify, you DON'T need a minimum of three notes to create a chord. You need three notes to create a triad, but not to create a chord.

+Janek Gwizdala well maybe 2 notes can sound like a chord, but it's theoretically wrong to say that is a chord. It's just an interval of two notes. I don't know any musical theory that say the opposite. I'm not a really good english speaker so I'm sorry if sounded offensive. take care!
