Sponsored by the Spiralis Music Trust, this 25-minute documentary traces the extraordinary life of Chou Wen-chung, the first Chinese composer to achieve recognition in the West. He came to the U.S. in 1946, studied with Edgard Varèse and went on to create a ground-breaking repertoire of works that defy cultural categories.
As an educator at Columbia University, Chou was mentor to the first generation of composers to emerge after the Cultural Revolution including Tan Dun and Bright Sheng. This film includes interviews with the composer, historical footage and samples of his works performed from the 1950's to the present day.
The film was premiered at the opening of the Chou Wen-chung Music Research Center at the Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou, China.
