CHR TOWER PART 2
In this video I report the last steps to build the CHR Towers. Woodworking; measurements, cutting, gluing and finishing the boxes plus results, crossovers and frequency response curves.
The CHR Towers are a fantastic pair of powerful audio, low bass, high quality speakers. Made in Walnut Hardwood mixed with Euro-Ply and veneer, this design relies on the Markaudio CHR-90 Full-range and the SB Acoustics SB15MFC30-8 Woofer. This is a two way speaker box that impresses by its power, SPL and High Fidelity performance, even using 5" woofer drivers and full-ranges.

Another Bang Up! Job pal! The only thing that bothers me about DIY speakers is seeing the woofer screws. I like trim rings around the drivers. It would be great to see you try and accomplish this on one of your projects. I have done a trim ring on a project however I had to resort to automotive 2 sided tape which actually seems to work pretty good. Unless you like the screw look? I know allot of people do. Your craftsmanship is far above other DIY audio channels and I appreciate the content for that reason. Thanks! 🔈👍🏻

I removed the filter for the fullrange and then got a low impedance. At the end I built a new crossover for this speaker with a capacitor for the fullrange. Check video #3

Considering making a set of these for myself and potentially my boss (both audio engineers). How did you decide driver placement from the top of the cabinet? How much space is between the bottom of the tower and the port? Just trying to fill out the last bits of information. Additionally, do you have links to the components you used for the crossovers? Beautiful speakers and we’re going for small footprint, good sound, and wife approval!
@sonnoradesign
@sonnoradesign 9 месяцев назад
Haha! Wife approval always seem to come first hehe! Thanks for watching. Let me see, driver placement was based on listening position. 33 inches from floor to center of the CHR fullrange. 4.5 inches from the top of the box to center of fullrange driver. The woofers centers are at 6 3/4 inches from center of fullrange. Port is at 1 5/8 in from bottom of box, remember I added a piece of wood inside the box, on the bottom, so I doubled the bottom thickness. My sound impression: you guys probably have trained years, obviously. The CHR driver is bright, you can check the CHR-90 frequency response curve and there is a bump in the highs, I have the speakers toed out and I drop the highs a little bit on my Schiit EQ. Just so you know. Bass is impressive, I have them at 4 feet from the wall in a 17 feet deep room and sounds great at listening position. Punchy bass. Crossover: so I switched the crossovers. I now have the fullrange running with no filter and for the woofers, a 3.0 mH coil and a 33 uF capacitor for a 2nd order crossover. E mail me if you need help: Sonnoradesign@gmail.com

That’s right! They usually measure different after broke in. It only gets better! The TCP’s are really cool small ones as the RS100’s. I wish I could work on my truck as I do on speakers haha. It’s fun though.

Hello from the UK I am going to have a go at making a pair of the these speakers. My problem is laying out the dimensions. Does the volume of. the vented box include the area taken up by the port or is the port area in addition. Does the length of the port include the thickness of the rear panel. Perhaps you could help and advise me. I have already done the crossover as per your video. However I notice that you have changed it in the description above. Is the revised crossover much better or will my original be ok. Great videos by the way, very addictive. Regards Wayne

Hey SonnoraD, I just found your channel earlier today and left another comment about Al di Meola. I'm curious what years you messed with DB Drag Racing? I also did some building and competing. Drove to a 2-point event in Costa Mesa to set a world record in Street 1-2. Long years back!

I was trying to see how much I could squeeze from a 2x12" x 600w Street 1-2 class, no mods, one battery and the best I hit with one ZR600 amp was 151.1 but when I replaced the junk deep cycle with a Stinger and ran 2 amps (ZR600 - 2 x 150w @ 4ohm stereo) like the Zapco guys, I hit 154.7 with 2 L7 12". It was a blast until it got political. I once bought Alma Gates a smoothie and talked with her for an hour at a Cal Expo show. I played '98 - '02

@sonnoradesign
@sonnoradesign 9 месяцев назад
Hola Pedro.

@sonnoradesign
@sonnoradesign 9 месяцев назад
Hola. Gracias Pedro.

Greetings from Porto, Portugal! Big fan of your channel! Really love your work, and the way you communicate is really cool! I'm really thinking to build a pair of speakers inspired on this 2 videos you did. But I'm totally newbie to this, and little confused regarding the crossover build. There are so many components of different kinds and brands to choose from. Would you mind to share the components you bought to build your crossovers for this CHR tower speakers? Thanks a lot! Grande abraço! Edit: I've been digging in Soundimports and for me this looks the right choice: Inductors: Dayton Audio LW181-5 | 1.5 mH | 0.64 Ω | 3% | 18 AWG Resitors: Dayton Audio DPR20-7.0 | 7.0 Ω | 20 W | 1% Capacitors: Dayton Audio PMPC-25 | 25 µF | 1% | 250 V Do you think this is ok? Thanks!

I love your videos and you build beautiful speakers. I would love to come by and hear these speakers but I live in The Netherlands, so.... too far away. I decided I'm going to build these towers but I have tow questions: 1 How does the crossover filter connect to the THREE speakers; In the screen you show I see only one SB represented and moreover, on the back of the cabinet I see double connectors. Question 2 is: Did you change the crossover after 'breaking in' the speaker and if so how did you change them? I'm curious and eager for a reply as I cannot wait to go and build these speakers! Thanks in advance for replying!!
@sonnoradesign
@sonnoradesign 10 месяцев назад
Hey Ron! First, thanks for watching. I’m really excited for your build. I like those speakers a lot. Very powerful and lively. I switched the crossovers. I’m using a second order for the woofers and the fullranges are connected without crossovers. The parts are: 3.0 mH coils in series 30 uF capacitor in parallel The woofers are 8 ohms each and they are connected in parallel to have 4 ohms at the end. That’s why I’ve showed only one driver on the crossovers they are in parallel. You can get all of those components at Soundimports as you are in Europe. Let me know if you have further questions. You can email me as well. Sonnoradesign@gmail I forgot, the impedance goes as low as 3.7 ohms aprox, so make sure your amp can handle that.

32:21 The inductor is small on the woofer in that a lot of med is in the woofers. Nothing wrong with that, except it's not that much point source. I use 6.8 uh inductor on my woofer with my FR driver and the med seems just right. I suppose the transmission line design boosts the bottom end more than my bass reflex design (so you get deep punchy bass with such a small inductor). And your woofer level is just right (and the woofers don't need any resistance) it's good driver output match. On your FR driver, does the 25 uf mean mf? (like I usually see on caps) I use a 2.2 mf cap with a resistor in parallel to pizz up the top end for more sparkle. I haver never heard of 25 mf or 2.5 mf (only 22 and 2.2).

Hey Yashindian. I get it. You wanna make the same cabinet with different drivers. If you change the drivers you are making a new design and the box has to be recalculated. Those drivers you picked are not gonna work properly together with this crossover. I suggest getting 2 DS135 and a Tweeter the DC28F from Dayton for each box and make a 2 way speaker. I calculated the crossover and box for you. Send me an email: sonnoradesign@gmail.com

@sonnoradesign Yet another amazing build! You talked about changing box volume, what was the final volume for the CHR, and what Frequency did you decide to crossover at, as you also mentioned that CHR clipping at 100hz. I'm looking at a CHR , 5 inch tangband build, can't decide on crossover..
@sonnoradesign
@sonnoradesign Год назад
Hey David, at the end closed box is 6.5 liters, which rolls off the bass at around 100Hz. The crossover point is at around 700Hz and both bass and fullrange rolls off smoothly. I didn’t want to make a 2nd order crossover cause it would make the cutting curve steeper and I’d miss the mid bass from the mark audios. It’s a different design but works pretty well. I loved it.

Question, the hardwood looks beautiful but you could have gone with plywood and then a veneer like you did with the sides. Other than the aesthetics, and thoughts you’d like to share on the benefits/trade offs on the use of hardwood sections for this build?
@sonnoradesign
@sonnoradesign Год назад
Some people don’t even like hardwood on speakers cause it’s too “hard”, less damping. Some manufacturers use it all over (boenicke). In this case it made it easier to work on the corners, like rounding it up, gluing, sanding and mounting the drivers. You can totally use veneered plywood or MDF.

I just watched the conclusion of this great build and noticed you installed spiked feet on the speakers. My floor standers are the same dimensions, but I never installed the spikes when I bought them. They sit on a carpeted floor and are so heavy they are well seated, is there any benefit in putting them on?
@sonnoradesign
@sonnoradesign Год назад
Hey Jon. I used the spikes mostly to make the speakers stable. They are too skinny and I wanted them to sit right and safe on the floor. Some people claim it makes the speakers sound better but that’s controversial. They don’t really isolate the speakers from the floor so you can still have some kind of “interference” on the sound specially if the speakers are sitting on suspended wood floors. There are products for decoupling that do a good job isolating them from the floor. You should be good if they are safe and sturdy.
@jonboy9912
@jonboy9912 Год назад
@@sonnoradesign As ever man thanks for your advice and keep up the excellent work. My speakers are made from maple wood, are a little wider than yours and weigh a ton so if I will not get any kicker in sound quality from the spikes that were supplied by the manufacturer I will leave them off, because they sit comfortably on the wall to wall.
@jonboy9912
@jonboy9912 Год назад
