Anxious to receive my recently ordered practice chanter reed!

I remember my very first cane practice chanter reed that came with my RG Lawrie practice chanter in 1974. I played it from then until 1979. It became black with the years and lasted for five years. I loved it! From 1994 I played with plastic reeds. It is not easy to say what is best; plastic or cane? But I remember that I did not have to blow as hard with the cane reed as when blowing the plastic reed. Maybe I will again order for a cane reed from Mr. Apps, and give it a try again?

Well to my mind there's no question that Cane practice reeds give a far superior sound. As far as being hard to blow this is not true for my reeds. The bridle can be adjusted to close the mouth down and make the reed very easy. Mine is not harder than a plastic reed.

My goodness it’s true that if you wait long enough, things come back again. I remember my father taking me to Peter Henderson’s shop in Renfrew St., Glasgow in the 60s, and when my dad looked at the practice chanter reed, said “plastic?”. The man said “aye, ye rarely see a cane one noo, they’re a’ plastic”. Noo, I mean now they’re back. I think they sound better too.

AppsReeds I haven’t played my practice chanter or anything other than my Blair chanter, for about 15 years. I’m thinking of getting my old Lawries refurbished as soon as I can save up for that, so I had a look at my practice reed. It’s a cane reed, looking a bit grubby, so I dunked it in hydrogen peroxide and soaked it in water a bit. It needed a squeeze to get it going but was a bit dull so I cut a very little bit off the tip of the reed and crisped it up. It’s a wee bit harder to blow, but still sounding great. I need the extra puff to get me back into blowing anyway. My practice chanter mouthpiece that a teacher made for me out of aluminium in 1970 got dunked too.

JAZZ MAN That’s great. It’s always nice to get a little gem like that back to life again.

I've had one in since October of last year. I've dipped it in some watered down hydrogen peroxide a couple of time. The colour is a bit dark but it still sounds terrific. You can give them a scrape if you feel they are a little too strong after making the other adjustments. This must be dome very carefully as they are very thin to start with.

Wish you'd play a couple tunes on that practice chanter... would really really like to hear it. LOL.

I’ve got an antique set that of tiny ABW Lawrie pipes I think it requires these old fashioned type reeds to work.

Maybe. They can be very fiddly to reed.

Sounds good. But why it is double price to the chanter reed?

Hi. I have been using cane reeds in my PC since 2010 and I used to buy them from UK at the price of 6 pounds, i.e. at average price for a chanter reed then.

Hello Michael, I always play a McCallum chanter the same as this. It plays at around 453 but when I raised it in the reed seat it played at 440 nicely.
